Republican National Committee makes payments to Trump's lawyers, pissing off some GOP officials.

"This is not normal. Nothing about this is normal, especially since he's not only a former President but a billionaire," said a former top RNC official.

"What does any of this have to do with assisting Republicans in 2022 or preparing for the 2024 primary?" the official added.

Another former RNC official, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, said the RNC's decision to foot Trump's legal bills represents "the big conundrum" top party officials face as they try to avoid putting their thumbs on the scale ahead of the 2024 GOP presidential primary, in which Trump continues to tease his potential candidacy, while maintaining a record-breaking fundraising pace with the former President's assistance.
"Trump helps them raise boatloads of money but he's also likely to be a candidate for president and it's only going to become more difficult for them to keep a distance," the official said, while also questioning why the RNC is "having to pay for this when you have these super PACs taking in unlimited money for Trump."
A third RNC official described the relationship between Trump and the national party as "a hostage situation," claiming that Trump could devastate the GOP if he decided to leave the party or encouraged his supporters to stop contributing to it at any point, including if the RNC no longer agrees to cover portions of his legal bills.
"They can't disentangle themselves from him because they need him," this person said.

Bwahahahaha...Jared and Ivanka turned him down. I wonder how they're spending the $640 million they made off of their WH "duties?"

if it took them until thanksgiving 2021 to realize this was a hostage situation, then they deserve to be held for ransom by the world’s dumbest terrorist.

The party tried to keep him out. The problem is they spent decades courting the snake handler vote. And they certainly don’t get to bitch about that now.

This. I mean, for fuck's sake, posters on here were pointing that out DURING THE ORIGINAL TRUMP CAMPAIGN.  It's why you don't do business with mobsters. Once you're in....you can't get out.

Big wigs with lots of media stroke should start taunting dotard by saying he wouldn’t be shit without the RNC and no way he could win on his own in a third party run.

Would be beautiful to see that.  Even just the Liz Cheneys and Adam Kinzingers saying Trump only became a Republican because he couldn't do it on his own would bug the shit out of him.

Kinzinger could come out and say that he's been privately told by party officials that they can't get rid of Trump because he and his sons can't succeed on their own, unlike Fred Trump.

This is what I'm hoping happens with Don Huffines.

Does that mean less rnc money going to other close races throughout the country, in a meaningful way?

The amount they disclosed was just over $120,000 or so (at least what I saw), so it's not enough to matter by itself.

The problem is that it sends a clear message to Trump that he still rules over the party, and he could pressure them into withholding funding from incumbent Republicans that he doesn't like.

This quote about trump reminds me about the story involving the frog that gave a scorpion a ride across the stream.

In that story, both animals end up dead.

in real life, the scorpion kills the frog, uses its dead, bloated corpse as a raft as the current drifts him to shore, where he safely disembarks the frog corpse before pulling it onto the shore and fucking it in the mouth and butt until he gets bored. Then he robs it of all money and valuables and goes on his merry way while telling anyone who listens how the frog would never have gotten across the river without his help.

I’m no lawyer but the Trump obstruction of justice crimes are still fair game until next year when the statute of limitations expire on several events in 2017.  Seems like the evidence there is overwhelming and well documented in Volume 2 of the Mueller Report. PLUS HE PARDONED THE CO-CONSPIRATORS.

Do I think Trump gets charged with obstruction?  Sadly no, but the consequences of not prosecuting him for his crimes in office sets a horrible precedent for the office of the presidency.  Basically, the President will be above the law and unremovable while in office going forward.

I’m not. Anyone with a functioning brain knows that this was a premeditated criminal and terrorist conspiracy to commit sedition and treason (yes, the actual constitutional definition - they waged war against the United States). In a functioning republic, we would have gallows set up in front of the capitol steps, and we’d be using them.

But really, I can't wait until they do question and him and he listens to audio of the call and he simply says, "That's not me. That's in impersonator. A terrible one, too. Worst ever, probably."

"Uh, Mr Trump (fuck calling him Mr President - he never deserved that term in the first place), we geolocated the position of the call. You made it at 10:09 and you were on the toilet in the Oval Office office restroom." He'll forever be known as the President who tried to thwart democracy from the toilet. Can't wait for that footnote for his legacy. Maybe "taking a Trump" will become a thing.

I happen to think that they were just the ones holding the burner phones, and that they were handing it off to other people around them to talk on.

But if Eric Trump was involved in planning January 6th, it explains why it ended up with hundreds of loyal Trump followers in jail, losing jobs, businesses, etc.

Oddly enough, in our republic, neither Sedition nor Treason carry the death penalty.

Nor does insurrection.

So, unless "functioning republic" includes ex post facto laws, you're a little off here.

Treason specifically calls for the death penalty - first statute you cited:

“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”

And shall suffer death. Seems pretty serious.
