Fishing Megathread: Looking For Big Girls Who swallow

Not great for the kind of fishing trips I do but if I ever had to run a center console that would be the one. Amazing boat man. Congrats.

Yeah, definitely a different type of fishing. I don’t get to spend as much time on the coast as I’d like, so getting out there fast is important. Also, my kids don’t have a huge attention span for trolling at this point, but are usually fired up for a snapper trip.

Can’t wait for the fall to get it out to Perdido.

I fish on a buddy's 38 foot cat hull with twin 250s.  We leave in the evening and kind of slow roll out 100 to 130 miles from Freeport to conserve fuel.  And it's a good opportunity to bullshit on the way out.  Troll most of the day.  On the way back, we haul ass back outside of hitting a couple snapper spots.

My 12 year caught a nice Cobia on our second trip out on the new (to us) Freeman out of Port Aransas.

Coincidentally, i specialize in tequila, amazing true stories, exceptional tall tales, and have a plethora of damn fine dirty jokes you have never heard before!  That one day you are gonna go out solo to fix, mount or test something and everyone is busy at the last second think of the sentence above! 😉

Hey! Can't hurt to at least make a pitch!

My son and I are headed out to Wyoming this week on rambling trip fly fishing and camping in pursuit of the Wyoming Cutt-Slam:

Hopefully no grizzly bears in our future as both Snake River and Yellowstone cutt streams are in serious grizz country.

I did this recently with my family.  It was an absolute blast. Let me know if you have any questions about any of the watersheds. Hopefully the water levels aren't too high for y'all.

11am to 1pm with a little time to kill.  Usually not the best time mid summer but I guess the full moon underfoot was helpful.  Two twin reds right at 20 and a nice fat trout at 19.

You are under arrest! Clearly that trout is over 20 inches! 😉

Well done.  I talked myself out of leaving the canal all weekend.

not uncommon.   That’s a lot of fiberglass pushing on a lot of aluminum.

If you can afford that boat you can afford two more tires on the back of your truck. I’d stay way the fuck away from that guy on the road in traffic.

I had a 250 searay back in the day with an aluminum trailer and it weighed 9k with fuel and all my shit on the boat. Towed it with a 7.3 f250. Had a few tards cutting me off or braking hard. No way I would tow that thing with a single rear axle.

Im not in disagreement, just noting it’s not uncommon. I’m sure the trailer has some good brakes, but bags and duals on the back would be ideal.   I’m guessing it sits in a canal on a lift more often than not?  Either way, lots of potential for tail wagging the dog there

Not calling you out, just continuing the conversation; and I completely agree.

This is a local haul, between the yard and ramp. I’m hiring a hauler any time the boat leaves city limits bigly. 3/4 ton is okay to move around gingerly, but not for moving a considerable distance.

The rise of Lake Buchanan put water on our super secret carp flats, so Rojo jr and I went up Saturday morning and fished for a few hours. We are going Permit fishing first week of August, so really just wanted to get some casting practice. Also got a chance to run some gas through the boat. There’s a LOT of floating wood in the lake, so I didn’t really open it up for long. The boy caught a couple nice ones.

that's awesome!

are you actually flycasting?  I went to a TPWD expo in Athens years ago and there was a carp specialist who gave a presentation.  he essentially just stalked fish in flats and dangled some kind of cockroach-looking fly in front of them.  barely casting, if at all.

something new (to me) this summer on "buck" is catfish on the surface, esp from my sailboat, like they're curious about my boat.  they get close enough to make eye contact.  saw one from the power boat at a distance yesterday, but it was mostly a family swim trip, and my trolling motor fob batteries were flaking when I tried to chase some popping bait.

Yea, we were intentionally trying to make 40-50' casts to them. It's a lot easier to let the skiff drift right up to them because you can watch the eat. But since we were practicing for Permit fishing, we were trying real hard to catch them at distance. Those things have a very subtle eat, and you've got to let them gnaw on it for a couple seconds.

A dude on a firearms  forum posted his fishing story today…..

Recently got back from a two-week vacation with the family in Playa del Carmen. The first five days we dealt with Alberto and a crap ton of rain, once that cleared out the weather was gorgeous, although a little hot. Had a great time, including a day on the water fishing.

The only big thing we caught was an 8' nurse shark my 16 yr old son reeled in.

1720445635977.png

We let the shark go, but caught a barracuda, a bunch of smaller bonito, snapper, and a couple of grouper that tasted amazing!

Now, for the near catastrophic ending to the trip and potentially, me...

One of the deck hands took a bunch of photos and videos with his phone during the trip, also turned out that they knew the deckhand who helped me catch a sailfish in Cabo in May. Heading back to the dock, I went up on the fly bridge to start sharing photos back and forth. Leaning up against the back rail, looking at my phone and not paying attention, we went under a low bridge.

The concrete I-beam hit me square in the chest, knocked me backwards over the rail, which caused me to do two full somersaults, one onto my back on the top deck, and then another onto the bottom deck. By the grace of God, I did not hit my head, the fighting chair, or a movable set of steps on the lower deck, or the boat rail. I managed to land in the only clear space on the lower deck and had less than 3-4" on either side of me. I was also not expecting it, so did not have time to tense up, otherwise I am sure I would have broken something. As it was, I got out of the incident with a nasty bruise on my right shoulder blade, right forearm, and right bicep. I still don't know how I got so lucky, other than as mentioned... the grace of God. Being almost 49, I was sore as hell the next day though!!

Usually I have to tell the kids to put those things down...

What is the best place in Port Aransas/Aransas Pass/Rockport to buy fresh shrimp for a boil?

Shrimp season opens July 15th. After that go buy it straight off the boat Peggy Ann. It’s docked in the city marina right near the pavilion.

Also - start roasting your shrimp in the oven!  We will never boil shrimp again, as roasting gives perfect cook.  450 degrees, for about 8 minutes or until they turn pink.  We boil all the other crap and boil up the shells ahead of time when we peel the shrimp.  Then add that shrimp shell base to flavor the boil of the potatoes, corn and shrooms.  We also tend to go with head on for the shrimp to get that extra flavor for the base from the heads.

First time eating saltwater quail. Will def keep throats on every big enough fish going forward.

Fuck yes.  A lot of people toss out the throats.  Never understood why.

Waiting on a cleaning table at Charlie’s one day, and I hear the guide cleaning fish ask his sports if they mind if he keeps some “scraps”. I look over and he’s got all the throats set aside for “scraps”. We made eye contact and I gave him the “you’re a sneaky fucker” grin, and he turned away so he didn’t laugh.

Float fished the San Marcos yesterday from San Marcos River Retreat to Scull Road - took about 4.5 hours.  What a beautiful river.  There are some minor rapids along the way and Cottonseed Rapids which can be tricky in a fishing kayak.  There were two people on the trip that flipped over.

Flyfishing from a kayak can be a real pain in the ass. I suspect I spent as much time untangling fly line than I did actually casting.  Ended up with a couple Guadalupe bass and a couple sunfish.  I was paddling with a group, one of which is a guide.  He didn't do much better, so I don't feel bad.

I'd do the float again.
