Sorry, never seen this before.  What is it?

IMG_3018.thumb.jpeg.a45413bd038fa34540a3280cf7e6546c.jpeg

it's a pad (the spikes are soft) that you put your extra fly line in so it doesn't fall in the water, tangle on the boat and is otherwise accessible for smooth casting. I let out about 50 feet of line when we are hunting for reds and that's a lot of excess line to be just lying there without something to keep it in place.

some use buckets instead.

on calm days such tools may be optional for some, but on windy days they are pretty much a necessity for fly fishing.

in that pic I have a fish on the line and it's taken all the slack and I've got it on the reel so you can't see how that pad is used here.

because it makes me happy that this guy is out there catching giant fucking bass downtown

Saw this elsewhere.  So freakin' cool.  How amazing would that be to hook into that big girl with downtown as your backdrop!?!?

Also, someone said he looks just like Bob from Bob's Burgers.

Town Lake used to be one of the best big bass lakes in the state. Then they put grass carp in the lake to "manage vegetation" and they destroyed the big bass habitat. Good to see it's rebounding. Maybe Nicole needs an award from Parks and Wildlife for her work adding nutrients to the lake.

I just love that he looks like the most Austin character of all time doing an extremely Austin thing, and he’s wearing a Sam’s Town Point trucker hat while doing it. It’s too good.

If he’s here, he probably posts in the guitar thread. That’s Willie Pipkin, guitarist from the South Austin Jug Band and the Little Elmore Reed Band. According to discogs, he also played guitar on a couple tracks on the last Charley Crockett record.

Fished the guad two weeks ago with a lawyer buddy and then struck out on the coast hunting reds last week. I think I’m going to take some casting lessons. Hard day, overcast, windy, water was low but fish weren’t really moving. Saw plenty too late, only had 3 legit shots. I need to increase my percentage from 1/4 or 1/5 I net to 1/3 or 1/2.

my buddy’s first trout on the fly…

Fished the Pescadora Lady Angler tournament Friday and Saturday out of our home Marina Pez Vela in Costa Rica. 57 teams competing, max 5 girls per boat. They allow hook and hand where a guy can hook the fish and then hand it to a female to reel in or you can go IGFA rules where the girls hook their own fish and earn bonus points. We chose IGFA even though our girls aren’t nearly  as experienced as the other teams here.

Day 1 was amazing. We bounced up and down between 1st and 7th place all day, finally holding 2nd place for almost the last 3 hours of the tournament. However with 2 minutes remaining a boat caught a doubleheader sailfish to pass us by one fish and knocking us out of the Day 1 money (only 2 boats get paid). Our girls  released 20 sailfish out of 38 bites and 2 blue marlin from 2 bites. an amazing job by our team to finish the day that high on the leaderboard.

Day 2 didn’t go nearly as well. We went 11/21 on sailfish and 0/2 on blue marlin and just never found the right spot to fish. We still ended up finishing 17th out of 57 teams, and 7th place of all IGFA teams.

The girls were so excited about the result they have decided to become a permanent team, practice fishing here whenever possible and also fishing in Guatemala and entering all the female tournaments they can.

5, 2, 1, 4, 3?

Well at least you didn’t put my wife last. All 5 of them clean up very nicely and as a bonus absolutely love fishing. I’ll see if I can find some of the pictures from the awards party.

Lol! Honestly they could have been in any order, I just didn't want surly to slip. Badass that they got so fired up to chase em!

I’ve fished a lot of tournaments over the years. Honestly this one is the most fun tournament I’ve ever done. And the girls- wiring fish to hooking their own fish on circle hooks to rigging baits to the party - they can do it all.

Charleston, SC. Does anyone have any experience fishing around there?  There are two or three really helpful threads for food and lodging, but not much for outdoor activities. We are possibly going there at the end of July.

What kind of fishing are you looking for? I can put you in touch with good charter boats for offshore fishing.

You mean bass player?

I'll see myself out.

My buddy fished with Austin Young out of Charleston a few years back and loved it.  He's a great photographer too.

Not sure yet, just researching what is out there. Went offshore fishing twice, both times in Key West with the same outfitter. Really enjoyed ourselves. We’re very, very casual.
Your suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I’ve got a buddy looking to try out his drift boat on the Colorado, putting in at Liitle Webberville. Anyone got a recco on a good takeout point down river from there?

Big Webbervile? Kidding, kinda. I haven’t looked at flows, so I don’t know how hard he’d have to work, but I think the next takeout spot after Webberville park is at the 969 crossing. There’s a big trailer park right by there, so I don’t know about leaving a vehicle there for a long time.

My guide says San Marcos is about all he can do right now without a lot of effort. I didn’t ask specifically about the Colorado tho. This was a convo about a month ago.

Sailfish Tournament today. 3rd place. Oof. It pays 2 places. 2nd tournament in a row we’ve missed the money by 1 fish. Last time it was with 2 minutes to go, this time was maybe worse because we were 5 fish ahead with just over an hour left.

Tough fishing today but Rum Runner killed it today with  22 releases. No one else was able to keep up. We’ve been on the fish the previous 3 days - released 27, then 24, then 30 yesterday but unfortunately our fish just weren’t biting today where we had found them the previous days and we ended up with only 14.

Video is one of the two blue marlin we caught 2 days ago. Notable because it’s tiny. Maybe barely over 100 pounds.
