As an addendum to my post above, here is a point of comparison on BIG Games with 3 best UT coaches so far.

Note: These do not include all ranked teams played against. Just what were the BIG games: bowls, rivals, big name teams, titles on the line.

DKR
OU:  12-7-1
A&M: 17-3
Arky: 15-5
-- a combined 44-15-1 against these three rivals!
USC: 0-2
UCLA: 2-0
Bama: 2-0-1
Bowls: 8-7-1
Title Games: 2-1 (lost to Irish in 1971 Cotton Bowl, but already had UPI title at end of season)
3 National Titles
TOTAL: 58-25-3

MACK
OU: 7-9
A&M: 10-4
Arky: 0-1
Huskers: 8-1
Tech/Leach (when ranked): 3-1
Bowls: 10-5
Big 12 Title: 2-2
1 National Title
TOTAL: 40-23

AKERS
OU 5-4-1
A&M: 5-5
Arky: 7-2
Penn State: 1-0
Auburn: 2-0
Bowls: 2-7
TOTAL: 22-15-1

SARK
OU: 2-2
Bowls: 0-2 (including playoff)
Big 12 Title 1-0
Bama 1-1
Michigan 1-0
Georgia 0-1
TCU (ranked #4 unbeaten): 0-1
TOTAL 5-7

HERMAN add-on for the lulz!
OU: 1-4
Big 12 title: 0-1
USC 1-1
Bowls: 4-0
TOTAL: 5-6

Non-CFP bowl games are not big games.  They have not been big games for a while. Players sit out now, if they’re going into the draft. Hugh Frieze admitted last year that he spent his time before Auburn’s bowl game recruiting, and not game planning (and Auburn fans were fine with that).

Herman’s 4-0 in bowls was fun (I’ve seen it suggested that his good bowl record was because he didn’t care about the games and the team just played with fun), but I would only give him credit for the Sugar Bowl, as it was a NYE6 bowl, and felt big. Herman’s Alamo Bowl wins (and Sark’s Alamo Bowl loss) just didn’t mean anything.

Gee nice aggy stats.  Which one of them won their conference and made the playoffs

Sark: Season three and seven games into season 4. 18-3

Fisher, same: 14-3 (Covid year and floor about to drop out)

Sumlin, same: 13-7

Bad play calling, bad execution, horrific line play and somehow we squeak it out. If we can’t stretch the field with Quinn then sark is gonna be very handicapped the last 4 games. At Arkansas(thank God it’s at 11a) will be tougher than yesterday and obviously at Aggy will be tough.

I’m sure we’re all frustrated to have such a great defense but still struggle to put teams away because our “juggernaut” offense with a seasoned QB still has not taken form.   I do wonder if the title Sark was a part of with Bama made him a little stubborn since they were able to win with a statue playing QB.

Of the top 11 offenses in CFB, all but two of them have effective runners at QB.  Whether they are more decisive and elusive when things break down or if the QB run game is a staple of their offense, it’s pretty clear that mobile QBs keep the chains moving.

Seems like incorporating a sprinkle of QB run into the scheme or at least encouraging the QB to go grab 5 or 10 yards when it’s there could help  significantly.

I do hope when Arch is the starter that Sark uses his legs to keep defenses honest.  These A-gap blitzes we keep seeing would decrease if teams knew the QB was prone to pull the read and run off-tackle.

True dat.

Howsomever... it's never to early to ignore the possibility of having to replace Sark, whether illness, death, or a call from Jerrah. And if something actually does happen, who ya gonna call? Guy that does the AFLAC ads - the shorter one - probably not interested, but he might have an opinion...

I don't know shit about AI, but that article sounds like something that would be spit out of a computer being asked to write an article on Steve Sarkisian turning down a request by Jerry Jones to become the Cowboys HC.  Pretty weak.

Is it just me.l, or does Saek just squat on the sidelines trying to put a square peg into a round.nole?.

How is his playcallimg night and day when he was Bama? It's like we're depleted.of WRs. What's with his conservative bullshit? I don't care if he starts with screens, or whatever, but he has to allow Qiimm/Arch to launch it when out WR's are wide fucking open. Just like saw with Matthew Golden in the Georgia game..what does he Do? Self-sacks. Underthrows Helm, Wisner..Blue. And over threw the ball to Wingo. Air that fucker out and let those 4 and 5 star wrs eat. Let the running game open

This isn't a hard concept. Coaches make it more difficult than it needs to be.  Dart will never start for an NFL team, but at least he's not afraod move the chains.

Just watched replay last night. The reverse to Bond for the TD was fucking witchcraft.

I don't watch a lot of film or anything but not sure I have seen that kind of motion before and for Texas to execute that flawlessly says something about how they are drilling in practice.

If you're a D coordinator and you see that on film you have to be thinking WTF?

And I think we all underrate Ewers on the ball fakes and ball handling. Its subtle but he is pretty smooth

Steve Sarkisian: Game-planning is science, play-calling is art

After painting a Rembrandt on the canvas of Campbell-Williams Field on Saturday, Steve Sarkisian broke down the process of melding game-planning with play-calling.

ZACH BARNETT      3 HOURS AGO

Steve Sarkisian painted a Rembrandt on Saturday.

In demolishing Florida 49-17, Texas rolled up 562 yards of offense on 64 plays, but that doesn't tell the full story. Twelve of UT's first 42 snaps gained at least 20 yards (and one more went for 19), including these beauties:

After struggling through three games in his return from a September oblique injury, Quinn Ewers went 19-of-27 for 333 yards with a career-high five touchdowns in a 32-point demolition that wasn't as close as the final margin.

Sark has authored some clunkers over his career and even this season (see the 0-point first half vs. Georgia on Oct. 19), but when he's in his bag, there are few better at hitting it where they ain't than him.

On Monday, Sarkisian broke down the process of melding the science of game-planning with the art of play-calling.

"Putting a game plan together is very analytical. You can call it mathematical and scientific in that way. I like to think calling a game is a little bit more of art. It's a little bit more of a blank canvas," he said.

"I could hand you guys the call sheet and I could tell you it's 3rd-and-6, and you'd look, there's five or six calls at 3rd-and-6 and (you'd) just pick one of them. You could kind of follow the script to some degree and it might go well, it might not. You don't know."

In studying the best in the business across a now-25-year career, Sarkisian said the best play-callers have to be willing to do three things when the calm of a Monday film study meets the chaos of 3rd-and-6.

"You have to have the willingness to adjust, you have to be willing to take calculated risks, and you have to trust your players," he said. "When you do that, sometimes you say, we were going to take five or six shots in this game but predicated on the way the defense is playing, we have to scale that back and play a different style. Some games you go into thinking, we're not going to get a lot of shot opportunities and how they're playing you and how the offense is performing, you may take two or three more shots.

Finally, there's one last box an offensive coordinator has to check to become a Picasso of the play sheet, Sarkisian said: "You've got to make sure the players understand the whys of why you've called certain things as you go."

Sarkisian and AP No. 3 Texas will hope to paint another classic this Saturday at Arkansas (noon ET, ABC).

I probably haven't paid much attention, over the years, to knob-slobbing of play callers. Maybe it's that, or maybe it's just that now the Master is calling our plays, but it sometimes seems the kudos are over the top.

On the other hand, it might be the years of GDGD using animal crackers, dartboards, or random license plate numbers (joking - he was calling whatever Mack told him to call, and giving Mack credit when it worked) followed by Potato head and MensaTom not calling diddle-e-squat.

Whatever, when it works, it's Bee-fucking-yootyfull.

I'm a huge Sark fan.

I don't post about him often, looking back sadly at the arrogance of Tom Herman, the complete ineptitude of Charlie Strong and the often total mismanagement and mail in of Mack Brown , Steve Sarkisian has been a boon for Texas Football.

The next few games in my opinion sets the tone for what follows, does he beat our rivals and run up the score or does his team fall flat on the road ? Can he hit the playoffs 2 years in a row?

Get it done Sark, you've got a legacy to fulfill.

At the start of the second half, one of the announcers said Sark wanted to re-establish the run game and I chortled cause he never established it period.

By the time the game ended Arkansas was gassed on D. We held the ball the last 7 minutes and that was with Arky having their full timeouts and 2 minute timeout. Dominated on D and controlled the game in the fourth.

Is it just me or is it a little strange that Loreal is not only on the sidelines, but usually within 5-10 feet of Sark during the games?

I think you are referencing one of the girls on staff that I see in the background of a lot of TV sideline shots. That is not Loreal.
