Official Coach Sark Thread of Dominance—haters back off

You know what else is a pattern the last few years?  Quinn Ewers.

Let's see what happens when Sark works with someone else.

I mean, Sark has 100% control who starts as QB, right? It's not like Quinn was forced on him and he can't do anything about it. Arch could have been our QB this entire season if Sark wanted. Quinn could have never gotten his job back once he got injured. Or, Arch takes the reigns full time when Quinn was benched against Georgia a few months ago. That is all on Sark counting on a QB who has shown for 3 years he isn't that guy. I don't care about all the good plays Ewers makes. No one is arguing he can't make plays. But all the other bullshit from him ends up cancelling it out in the end. 2 years in a row, we see the Washington and Georgia games end because how ineffective he is.

Agreed. As a niners fan, it's the same opinion with Shanahan. Find someone you trust and let them have the reigns so you can manage the whole team.

Spot on.

Sark does not have the balls to do what DKR did in 1968.

1. Bench the all-world senior QB ("Super Bill" Bradley) who could not run the Wishbone.

2. Insert unproven backup junior QB (James Street) to see if he could run the Wishbone.

-- Street could run it! Like wow! Night and day. 2-3 games in and the Wishbone was humming.

-- Bradley had zero QB moxey, turns out Street had tons of it.

So Royal rolled the dice.... won 30 straight games ... and two MNC ... and developed one of the great offenses of all-time.

If Sark makes that change earlier in season .... with Arch's running threat and way more moxey than Ewers ... this team rolls Georgia by 2 TDS, shuts out aggy by 4-5 TDs, wins SEC in first year, etc.

Arch does not have to be all-world. Just run the full fucking offense. Not a limited version.

Hell, Manning is even wearing Street's number: 16. (You damn well know grandpa Archie knows that. He played in Street's era.)

With this defense, Sark has blown a perfect opportunity win a title .... and echo a golden era of UT football.

All of that is true.  I just think Sark is hoarding Arch as a precious commodity of near-perfect development and he's going all Paul Masson on us.

I also imagine that Sark is as flabbergasted by Ewers' weirdness as any of us.

But, assuming Arch is as near-perfect as we hope, we probably ought to see what happens when he has the reins full time.

I can already tell you what happens when arch takes over that’s his backup is the guy we will all want to lead this team. The backup is always the better choice.

Not here to bash Sark. Hes a great coach but I think he gets in his own way a lot including yesterday.

Yea one of the ways he gets in his own way is playing a one dimensional qb that can’t move and isn’t a threat to run when he has a qb that has already proven he can do both but sticks with ewers. Maybe a extra week off will help this but I doubt it.

Maybe so my man, but Sark ain’t switching QB’s this late in the season. I’m sorry to tell you.

You're probably correct. But assuming we get by Clemson and ASU and run into UGa again, if we see Quinn in the same game plan... we likely need to be prepared lubed for the same result.

Small aside: how could you watch Haynes King running all over and come that close to derailing UGa, and not consider readying a package/plan for going to Manning if Ewers wasn't scoring?

Smaller aside: as HC, at the long, long halftime, wouldn't you be all over your DC to be ready for the freshman running QB?

Sark's resume as an OC speaks for itself, but when you look at our second half performances this season (and throughout his tenure), there's clearly a problem on the headsets. Whether it's due to not seeing the entire field from the booth, or just be task-saturated, adjustments aren't being made. The question should always be 'What Would Saban Do?' He would hire an experienced OC (along with a shit ton of analysts) and fucking fix it. We'll see if Sark can put his ego aside and do that.

Why not just let Milwee call plays?

It's not just play calling, but also halftime adjustments. I'm assuming Milwee already plays a role in that, and it hasn't been great. Seems like we could do better. But it might be a step in the right direction.

This isn't a new development. He's the only person on the planet that could have/can do something about it. Standing around all flabbergasted ain't a good look.

As for Sark giving up play calling responsibilities, I doubt that ever happens. That's basically his identity and I'm guessing what he likes most about coaching.

I'd agree. I'm just hoping he's able to take a step back and look at who is considered the top playcallers in college football by other coaches:

Lincoln Riley, himself, Ryan Day, Lane Kiffin, Chip Kelly, Josh Heupel

and then look at the success their teams have had with them as dedicated OC vs being head coach. Then look at the teams who have won championships with a "lesser" play caller.

If you told me to come up with metrics for Sark at the beginning of the year I would have come up with something like:

Beat ou

Beat aggy

Win NC

Win CCG

Beat Michigan.

These are listed in order of importance to me.

My point is that the CCG was icing, never the cake, at least for me.  I understand it's an extra fu to the haters, but I want to win it all and we still can.

Oh, and along the subject of icing on the cake, Oregon, Ohio and Georgia are the best teams we'll face in the playoff and although we lost the CCG, we may have slept they first round draft pick qb, which means our odds of beating them next time are probably better.

Oh, and we've got Arch lined up for next year with the number one class on the way for the spring.

And so from my seats I grade Sark as something like an A-.

Now you can all go back to your regularly scheduled programming and calling him a dumbass.

Every Surly is happier with Almost-even Steven at the helm than we were with Corch Potato or MensaTom. There may be some who would dispute that, but they show themselves to be only PseudoSurly by that very ignorance.

That said, most of Surly agrees that "almost" is not quite good enough. Where we differ in our shitty opinions is the nature of the next step, the one that takes us over that last hurdle and into the Promised Land.

My shitty opinion is that Sark needs to quit being Saban the Goat's super OC and step into Saban's shoes and direct all three of his Coordinators instead of being OC first and HC second on Game Day. As HC, the job is to formulate the strategy and make sure the Coordinators not only know, but DO, what is tactically and operationally necessary.

More shitty opinion. Milwee is not ready to become that OC. He can't even coach Ewers out of his widely-criticized flaws, and apparently totally defers to Sarkisian instead of speaking truth.

All that said... yeah, Sark is really, really good, and so is the team he's built. Not one of us is happy about the fact that Kirby Smart has proven himself to be the better HC - or at least the luckiest.

Like you, I'm more than ready to see that next step taken, and we all need to be aware that we are still on that path, right this very instant. We stumbled, but we're still on the path.

Let's take care of Clemson.

If you told me that, today, I could trade straight up, Kirby for Sark, I would say no f'ing way.

I believe Sark is the better coach and I like his style better.  Kirby is the lesser of the two and is insufferable.

If you told me I could trade, straight up, for any coach, coordinator, etc. in college football, the only change I would make would be to try to get Muschamp.  Get him some cushy deal like Fatterson had.  That fiery mf'er almost ripped his own ear off one day.

Also, I can't wait until someone plows kirby over in the white area next to the sideline and we get a gif of him getting blasted, visor flying and all.  That will be a glorious day.

Not what I said, friendo.

Didn't Sark hire Fatterson to be special assistant for offensive production or something?  Throw back Fatterson or whoever is sitting in his spot, and get me Muschamp.

Truthfully, the Defense doesn't need any help.  But, I still would rather that lunatic be on the Texas sideline than the Georgia sideline.

Points per game in the Sark era.

OFFENSE

2021: 35 points

2022: 35 points

2023: 36 points

2024: 35 points

By this measure, the one that ultimately counts, Sark's offense averages 35 a game.

-- Regardless of whether the QB is Casey, Hudson, or Quinn for 3 years.

Zero difference or improvement across 4 years. Seems like a concern.

--------------

What has improved is the points allowed.

DEFENSE

2021: 29 points (5-7 record)

2022: 26 (8-5)

2023: 19 (12-2)

2024: 11 (11-2 so far)

That's fantastic improvement.

The defense is why Texas won 12 games last year and has 11 this year.

Not Dr. Pepper Quinn or Sark's supposedly "elite" play calling.

We have a 16-0 title winning defense saddled with an 8-5 offense.

That is 100% unadulterated complete bullshit.

We've had generational QBs on paper and on the field and it's a moral tenet of Longhorns By God Fandom, and it will happen to Arch, too. Put Simms In was not only a thread on Hornfans when Applewhite was tossing INTs, it was a username. Then someone made Put Applewhite In when Simms threw his first INT. VY to WR. Chiles Should Starts. We've had generational, nationally-hyped QBs on paper and on the field in the last 30 years and the one consistent holdover from pre-social media days has been that Horns fans love the goddamned backup. The only way Arch gets a certain level of pass from the fans will be if he never loses a game. Texas is 23-4 in the last two years and you'd think it was the opposite from how the sky seems to be falling on Surly.

Edit: you can go back and read the ULM game thread to see how short that leash was already. 4 TDs against UTSA meant Ewers was riding the bench...then 2 INTs against ULM and everyone was hoping Ewers was healthy for 0u. You've got a short fucking memory.

I’ve seen some pretty bad takes on here.

“Beating the Sooners and A&M are more important than a National Championship”

“Sark is a better coach than the man that’s out coached  him twice”

Smh y’all sound like Aggies . Not saying Sark won’t be better than Kirby but Kirby’s won at the highest level. Sarks lost at the highest lol. Also taking Aggie/Sooner Wins over a NC is a new low which is crazy for even surly.

anyway to get to my point. .

The more I watch that game the more I see yea we’ll blame Quinn but Sark lost that game more so than Quinn. He went away from what worked and did all that dumb long development or behind the line of scrimmage bullshit against a team with a better front. I know that shit is his bread and butter but fuck Sark read the room. Also the fake punt Sark is the head coach, all the play calls go through him. It’s more but Sark has to be better and stop being so stubborn, it’s like he doesn’t know how or want to adjust cause he feels like his shit will always work and it may but when you’re talking about National Championships you have to adjust to your opponent, once his script is off it’s over with and that’s a bad feeling.

I don’t know if Sark will win national titles but I’m just acknowledging that his rebuilding of Texas into a title contender (which I’m pleased with) is different than Smart. Who’s the current barometer of success.

Can we stop with the "Sark should hire a real OC and focus on being a CEO head football coach!"

First, it's not realistic and not going to happen outside of fantasy land.  If Sark wanted to go that route, he would have a long time ago.

Second, Sark sees play calling as his greatest strength, and he's probably right.  In his view, if you take him off the headset you are depriving the team of his single biggest asset.  Sark has shown that he's probably a top 3 offensive mind in CFB, so those clamoring for an OC would have to bet that the falloff from the OC we in-theory would get would be made up fro by the intangibles that Sark could bring by zooming out - and that is FAR from a given.  It's just as likely that we'd end up with a disgruntled OC who is pissed that the HC is meddling or dipping in at the wrong time, or that Sark cycles through OCs searching for someone to run his system as well as he can, etc.

Third, even if Sark gave up play calling to "zoom out," and goes to hire an OC...the OCs who are going to take that job aren't the OCs you want.  Any real hot shit OC is going to want to be somewhere where they can implement their own ideas and clearly own the offense, either at a top tier G7 or low/mid Power2 school, probably working under a defensive minded head coach who won't meddle as much.

Last don't anyone dare think of using the term "money whip" with regard to getting a top flight OC.  Texas doesn't do that.  And even if we did it rarely works.

So FUPM was criticized on Hornfans and Shaggy and Surly for being a CEO and not an Xs and Os coach and now Sark is being criticized for being too much Xs and Os and not enough of a CEO. Not only does the QB have to have a perfect completion percentage with at least 3 passing TDs, but the RBs have to rush for 100+ and 2 TD each with no turnovers, the OL has to allow no sacks or meaningful penetrations, the receivers have to each record 100 yrds and a receiving TD, the defense has to force TOs and hold the opponent to zero while never missing a tackle, ST has to force TOs while committing none and block punts and have return TDs, while HC needs to be an Xs and Os guy but not too much, and we need to win every game 146-0 after giving PK a couple of throwaway FGs just so he has meaningful gametime practice.

Y'all deserve Charlie Strong and Garrett Gilbert. Even Mensa was too good for you.

Our SOS in 2021 was a lot different than last year or this year. When you play extra games like we did in 2023 and this year it is usually against great competition. We faced 5 backup QB’s last year on defense. There are a billion other factors at play.

Also, saying we have a 8-5 offense is about as kneejerk as one can get. We rank top 25-30 nationally in yards, points, 3rd down and almost every passing statistic. We aren’t 2020 bama but there is middle ground between that and an Alamo Bowl offense.

This analysis seems lacking unless it takes into account what the average DPEI, etc. is of our opponents for each season.

It’s likely (I don’t have the numbers) that this season, we have faced better defenses than before. If true, having the same/similar ppg would actually indicate improvement.

Can we stop with the "Sark should hire a real OC and focus on being a CEO head football coach!"

It's a pretty bad take.

We're #19 in OFEI with our projected started RB out the entire year, 2 of our top 3 WRs banged up for about half the season, and add in some other players being out for a couple games throughout the season like Blue/Banks.

The offense has been crippled by injuries this season. It's also why I think Texas is the biggest benefactor of this 2 week break before the playoffs. Banks, Bond, and Moore getting healthy will have a huge impact IMO.
