Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls

This is true.
I think the two biggest fallacies about recruiting are the town the school is in and the HS coaches influence on where the players end up.
Both are true in some cases,  but for the most part neither are the deciding factor.

The town doesn't make a shit in most cases, it's the campus itself. aggy is able to create a Disneyworld type environment that makes the city of collie station totally irrelevant, and they aren't alone in this. Some recruits (like Arch) see the benefits of being tied to a city like Austin, but some simply won't, and in some cases it's actually a drawback.

fuck off with the jokes.  DL wins football games and sark can’t fucking get them in the boat.  the program has sucked for 13 years and we can’t recruit DL.  aggy is bringing in 5-stars through a revolving door.  simmons is great but this shit is fucking ridiculous.  the only good that will come from it is that sark’s non-closing mediocre ass will be gone soon enough and urban meyer will be the one to come in and finally win us a couple championships.

I forget sometimes how much aggy has won with all those DLineman…….

But, but, I thought aggy was stepping on their dicks in regards to NIL and recruiting?!? The rankings would indicate something completely different.

Clemson ahead of us too. Maybe there’s some legs to this Jesus thing. Religion has been recruiting 5 star idiots for centuries, why reinvent the wheel?

Jaray Bledsoe, Aaron Bryant, Sydir Mitchell, Byron Murphy’s development, Alex January, D’Antre Robinson, Melvin Hills, and portal guys as needed.

We’re fine.

2022 4*, 2022 4*, 2023 4*, 2021 4* (only starter), 2024 3*, 2024 4*, 2024 3*. Throwing numbers at the board did not work for the 2022 class (see Kris Ross + white dude) and it's not going to work long-term when we miss on guys like McKinley.

I don’t think we went to the same Disney World.

I'm talking about the sports centric facilities. aggy football players can pretty much avoid most of the Soviet era architecture and skinheads by taking a lot of online classes.

And a ton of online classes are a great way to identify a university that is “good enough” academically.

What makes McKinley better than them?

I'm gonna go ahead and say you have no idea.

Have Sorrell and Murphy had better careers than Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton thus far?

McKinley isn't the one to get your panties in a wad over. He's a project with great measurables.

No wonder they get their panties in a bundle about UT co-eds making fun of dildos, they have a huge deformed dildo dominating their campus.

Hearing Hudson is getting cold feet after this Tech performance.

Why wouldn’t he?

That shitty program with no history in a dusty remote town would be an awful place to spend 4 years of your life. Especially if your goals are to win hardware and get national attention.

No kidding. That program was able to keep Patrick Mahomes almost anonymous.

Some of the key callouts from the Horns 247 Stampede:

(Mack) Horns247 is told there’s growing optimism in Austin that the Longhorns can pull off a flip before all is said and done with Mack.

(Myles Davis) Davis says he is looking at the Texas Tech game for his return to Austin, which coincides with the run-up to Early Signing Day. If the Longhorns make a push, that could be an intriguing battle to watch.

(Terry Bussey) Bussey could potentially return to Austin for the Wyoming game next weekend, so his recruitment remains worth watching over the next 24 days.

(Jordan Davison - 2025 5* RB) Texas has hosted Davison about half a dozen times throughout his recruitment and is trending on the Crystal Ball to land the elite back. Alabama could be the chief competition when it’s all said and done. He, too, is expected back in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the game.

The Stampede: Latest intel on top UT targets, Texas' recruiting battles with Alabama

Football season is here and with that comes an expected uptick in recruiting buzz. Texas is getting set for its highly-anticipated road trip to Tuscaloosa this weekend while decision dates on the horizon are among the headlines from the recruiting trail.

In this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's Jordan Scruggs and Hank South break down notable recruiting battles between Texas and Alabama to date, deliver additional scoop on several top targets of the Longhorns and much more.

Let's dive in!

— When Texas and Alabama kick off Saturday evening from Bryant-Denny Stadium, the entire country will be watching, recruits included. Nick Saban and staff are hosting a large contingent of visitors, including mutual targets between the two programs. Here’s a look at some of the notable recruiting battles of late between the soon-to-be SEC foes:

Aeryn Hampton, Four-star ATH, Daingerfield — Texas commit

Hampton made two early commitments to Baylor and then Texas before reopening his recruitment last November. It came down to Texas and Alabama over the summer, with the former winning out and getting the two-way athlete back into the fold.

Solomon Williams, Four-star EDGE, Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day

Texas remains after a trio of edge targets, Williams included, to team up with last month’s marquee addition of five-star Colin Simmons. Williams unofficially visited Austin at the end of July and could return this fall for an official visit at some point. Texas and Alabama are featured among his group of top schools. The Sunshine State standout is expected in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the matchup. It’s hard to say which way Williams is leaning at this point in time.

Terry Bussey, Five-star ATH, Timpson

With a decision date on deck for Sept. 28, Bussey will also be in Tuscaloosa for the game this weekend, except on an official visit. Texas A&M has been trending for the in-state five-star, but Texas has hung in this one, and we’ll see what kind of effect the trip to Alabama this weekend has on him. Bussey could potentially return to Austin for the Wyoming game next weekend, so his recruitment remains worth watching over the next 24 days.

Danny Okoye, Four-star edge, Tulsa (Okla.) NOAH Homeschool

Another remaining edge target, it’s likely more of a Texas-Tennessee race for Okoye as things stand, with Oklahoma involved as well, but Alabama is working on the 6-foot-4, 241-pounder, hosting him for an unofficial visit in the summer. Okoye is expected back in Austin for the Wyoming game next weekend.

KJ Lacey, 2025 four-star QB, Saraland (Ala.) — Texas commit

Lacey is locked in with the Longhorns after picking the program over Alabama early in the summer. He’s shown no signs of wavering to date. The Tide is expected to still recruit him, so it’s to be determined how much of a threat they’ll remain.

Ryan Williams, 2025 5-star WR, Saraland (Ala.) — Alabama commit

Lacey’s superstar teammate, Williams doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere, but Texas could potentially still get him on campus at some point for a visit, presumably with Lacey. Still, it looks like a tall task to change the No. 1 wide receiver’s mind off the Tide for now.

Jordon Davison, 2025 5-star RB, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

Texas has hosted Davison about half a dozen times throughout his recruitment and is trending on the Crystal Ball to land the elite back. Alabama could be the chief competition when it’s all said and done. He, too, is expected back in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the game. — Hank South

DECISION COMING SOON FROM IN-STATE DEFENSIVE BACK

Horns247 was on-site in Houston on Friday night to see Fort Bend Marshall’s 56-7 drubbing of Crosby.

The Buffs' staunch defensive efforts were led on the backend by Fort Bend Marshall 2024 composite four-star safety Joshua Lair, who told Horns247 he’s narrowed his recruitment down to three schools: Baylor, Texas and Washington. Lair has one official visit left and a commitment date coming up in less than three weeks.

After Lair’s game against Alief Taylor on Thursday, the four-star prospect will travel to the Pacific Northwest on Friday to take in Washington’s home game against Tulsa the following day for his fourth and final official visit.

After returning home from his trip to Seattle, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder will use the next two weeks to come to a final decision on Sunday, Sept. 24.

While both Oklahoma and Houston are pushing hard to get Lair on campus ahead of his commitment date, he told Horns247 the Washington official visit is the only trip on the calendar for now.

Even though Washington hasn’t had much recent success pulling in recruits out of Fort Bend Marshall, they’ve recruited the Mo City powerhouse harder than most other schools in Texas the last few years and it shows in Lair’s recruitment.  Lair himself is a big fan of Washington’s program, school and campus, but he admitted that the proximity to home makes things more challenging for him and his family to spend time together.

The decision will be Lair’s to make, but those in his immediate circle prefer that he stay in the Lone Star State.

The official visit should better help Lair determine how much location will be a factor with Washington as it’ll be his second time seeing the Huskies after taking an unofficial visit in the spring.

Baylor has attacked this one head-on from the jump and as it’s come down to the wire they’ve found themselves firmly entrenched in Lair's recruitment of Lair due to the Bears' daily communication and overall heavy pursuit. No school has done more to show the four-star he’s a bigger priority than the Bears and Dave Aranda, Matthew Powledge and several other members of the Bears' defensive and personnel staff are in an active group chat with Lair and his parents, uncles aunts, and grandparents and have maintained the same family-wide approach for months now.

Lastly, as one would assume, Texas is also maintaining firm communication with Lair as Blake Gideon speaks with Lair every day with calls from Steve Sarkisian still coming three times a week.
Lair is a big fan of the Texas safeties coach and both he and Gideon share similar personality types as the two are both very serious and intentional with their actions at all times.

Texas Director of High School Relations Jahmal Fenner has also been using his deep Central Texas roots to build deeper relationships with Lair’s family, who originally hail from Northeast Austin, as does Fenner (a graduate of the former Reagan High School and most recently the head coach at LBJ).

At the high school level Lair is utilitzed as a versatile defensive chess piece and at times was recruited to play cornerback or safety, but as his recruitment has winded down his three finalists have all settled in on utilizing him in their respective variations of the star position.

The 6-foot-1, 185 pounder was hosted by Texas freshman safety Derek Williams while on his official visit to Texas, and with Horns247 checked in with Lair on Saturday to see which player from the Longhorns game he was really keying in on, Williams was the first name mentioned.

Like many recruits, early playing time will be a factor in the decision and the Longhorns have more than made it clear with the Lair that the coaching staff will play their best players regardless of age.

Like I’ve written about before though, coaches actually playing the freshman is a whole nother ball game so the Longhorns giving Derek Williams Jr. and Malik Muhammad the first and second highest snap counts out of any of the defensive backs vs Rice should go a long way in Lair knowing the Texas staff is serious.

We’ll have more on Lair later in the week. (Jordan Scruggs)

Where do things stand between Texas and Florida pledge Wardell Mack?

Texas was expected to host four-star cornerback Wardell Mack on Saturday for its season-opener against Rice. As Horns247 reported on Sunday, that trip did not end up happening due to scheduling conflicts. But that’s not necessarily a negative checking in with sources this weekend. Horns247 is told there’s growing optimism in Austin that the Longhorns can pull off a flip before all is said and done with Mack. We saw Texas trending following his official visit in June. However, Florida was able to win him over on his late July trek to Gainesville due to his relationship with UF assistant Corey Raymond and their push. Texas still considers Mack a top target and is treating him as such. It’s worth watching LSU here as well. (Hank South)

How serious of a flip threat is Texas with Texas A&M commit Myles Davis?

That question is dependent upon on how hard Texas presses for the four-star safety. Horns247 caught up with Davis on Friday night after his game against Westlake. He continues to hold the Longhorns in high regard, listing the program in his top two. Davis says he is looking at the Texas Tech game for his return to Austin, which coincides with the run-up to Early Signing Day. If the Longhorns make a push, that could be an intriguing battle to watch. Checking in with sources close to the recruitment, the feeling is Davis is set on Texas A&M right now. But again, we haven’t seen Texas put the pedal to the metal here just yet. (Hank South)

The latest on rising 2025 DB Caleb Chester

Horns247 was also able to speak with Lair’s teammate and good friend Fort Bend Marshall 2025 cornerback Caleb Chester following the Buffs 56-7 victory over Crosby.

With a decision date likely in the spring, Chester is still taking things slow as many of his 2025 classmates are but a quad of four schools in Arkansas, Florida State, Texas, and Texas A&M have really started to emerge coming out of the summer.

The 6-foot-1, 170 pounder also mentioned Oregon as a top school when asked about current favorites, but he didn’t bring the Ducks up again when asked about his visit plans for the rest of the fall which includes a trip to College Station to see the Aggies host Auburn on the 23rd as well as game visits to Arkansas and Florida State with dates to be determined.

Chester was in Austin on Saturday for Texas’ home opener vs Rice, and the Longhorns have made the Houston area native really feel like a massive priority the last few months as Steve Sarkisian and Chester exchanged texts ahead of Chester’s game on Friday and Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph has been on the phone with Chester every day since August 1st.

Sources close to the recruitment think this one will come down to the old Thanksgiving day rivals in Texas and Texas A&M and I think the Longhorns currently have the relationships factor going in their favor.

Chester grew up training with Texas second year defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau and even though he hails from the Houston area, Chester plays his club 7on7 with the DFW based Truebuzz organization which has established a nice pipeline to Austin having sent Anthony Hill, Ryan Watts, X'Avion Brice, Juan Davis, and Savion Red to Texas in the past.

With that being said, Chester has more than just a handful of relationships with coaches and players inside the Longhorns building and that should help the Longhorns when it comes down to crunchtime in the spring. (Jordan Scruggs)

Westlake kicker Spencer Barnett boots a 59-yard field goal

Didn’t know you were going to get kicker scoop this morning did you? Barnett went viral in Westlake’s season-opening win over Ridge Point, booting a 59-yard field goal, drawing comparisons to Longhorns great and Westlake alum Justin Tucker. So, is Texas going to go after him? Not yet, we’re told. The Longhorns have two young kickers on the roster, so it could be dependent upon their status. But that doesn’t entirely rule out Texas getting involved. You don’t see that type of talent at the prep level every day. This past weekend against Judson Barnett went 2 of 3 on field goals from more reasonable distances.
