Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls

It’s true that we’ve only had a glimpse of Cam as a starter.  He did have an impressive 5 pancake blocks though.  He also had 3 false starts which certainly needs improvement.

tldr; he is a beast albeit raw.

It will help when defenses can't simulate our snap count all year next year while almost never getting flagged for it.

Eric Nahlin: Reasonable expectations for Texas' 15 early enrollees from the 2024 class

Quote

After the 2023 cycle, Texas had 14 signees enroll early. This year, there will be at least 15, with perhaps two more on the way. Being an early enrollee starts their physical and mental development early and gives each player a much better chance at making an early impact. If the coaches are selecting for players who will enroll early, that’s very smart. Even if there aren’t immediate returns with an early enrollee, it still helps for the 2025 season and beyond.  Six extra months to eat properly and develop is massive for an 18-year-old sponge. Here’s a look at the early enrollees along with their immediate outlook.

QB Trey Owens, Cy-Fair (Cypress, TX)

With the departure of Maalik Murphy there’s a chance Trey Owens could become third-string next season. (The coaches are trying to keep Charles Wright)

RB Christian Clark, Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ)
RB Jerrick Gibson, IMG Academy (Gainesville, FL)

Running back is loaded next year after Jaydon Blue, CJ Baxter, Savion Red, and Tre Wisner all demonstrated ability. But in the portal era, depth charts can thin quickly. Gibson is more nuanced than Clark, but Clark might have the higher ceiling. Clark is already on campus.

OL Daniel Cruz, Richland (North Richland Hills, TX)
OL Brandon Baker, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)

Jake Majors has only one season left. After that, center will be wide open. Cruz has the ability to start in 2025, especially after enrolling early. He’ll have the benefit of two spring practice blocks rather than one. Baker is in a similar situation in that Kelvin Banks has only one more year left. Baker will be able to throw his hat in the ring for playing time in 2025.

WR Ryan Wingo, St. Louis University High (St. Louis, MO)
WR Parker Livingstone, Lovejoy (Lucas, TX)

Sark doesn’t like to rotate his receivers but with his size and speed Wingo might be too much of a specimen to have on the sidelines, especially as the program looks to replace Adonai Mitchell (assuming he goes pro). Livingstone is a stud in his own right with great size and good speed. He’s going to put on some really good muscle rather quickly. I’ll be interested to see what he registers on MPH. He might surprise a couple people.

TE Jordan Washington, Langham Creek (Houston, TX)

Washington won’t take too long to get into shape as a route runner but he still has to learn the playbook, get on the same page as the quarterback, and refine his blocking. This is a tough position to make an immediate impact beyond anything other than as a receiver. He’s talented, though, and he may carve out an early role in the passing game.

DL Alex January, Duncanville (Duncanville, TX)
DL D’antre Robinson, Jones (Orlando, FL)

Getting both on campus early is a massive development. Each has the chance to earn early snaps, but as Sydir Mitchell showed, it takes more than just size and talent to play early. One of these two needs to step up and earn playing time. January is very underrated. The future is bright, but when is the future?

EDGE Colin Simmons, Duncanville (Duncanville, TX)
EDGE Zina Umeozulu, Allen (Allen, TX)

Simmons will be a day one impact player but maybe just situationally to start. Some of his down-to-down opportunities could depend on what the staff does with Ethan Burke. I wouldn’t be surprised if Burke moved to Jack which would open up a lot of snaps at Buck. Umeozulu will be a Jack long term. He has a great frame and good athleticism, but he’ll need to add size and strength. He needs to eat some weights and lift some protein. If he puts I the work he could look downright Vitruvian by the time he’s a junior.

DB Jordon Johnson-Rubell, IMG Academy (Fort Worth, TX)

JJ-R will likely start his career at Star which isn’t the easiest position to play early. There will be a lot of bodies competing for Jahdae Barron‘s snaps. I could see him becoming a quality special teamer.

CB Wardell Mack, John Ehret (Marrero, LA)
CB Kobe Black, Connally (Waco, TX)

Texas has three proven corners returning next year depending on what happens with Ryan Watts. If Watts returns, I think it’s more likely it would be to learn safety. Both Mack and Black are in position to play rotational snaps next season, similar to Malik Muhammad this year.

*****

Texas is also still pursuing McKinney safety Xavier Filsaime and Jasper A&M linebacker Tyanthony Smith. Both are early enrollees. Filsaime would have a good chance to play early thanks to his January arrival and a thin depth chart. Smith would need a developmental year but he should be ready to play beyond that. Smith will be a quick responder to S&C.

The Stampede: Putting percentages on remaining Texas targets
The latest on eleven Longhorns targets still on the board.
Horns247 Staff

We're exactly two weeks away from seeing Texas take on Washington in the Sugar Bowl for a shot at the National Championship. In three years Steve Sarkisian and his staff have figured out a way to fully revamp the program to level fans have wanted since the 2009 season. That said, the Longhorns are rolling and it's carrying over to the recruiting trail as Texas is set up for what should be a good next 48-72 hours for the program.

With only a few days left before the majority of FBS prospects are signed, the Longhorns will need to move quickly to make sure they get these players' signatures on Wednesday morning.

So who are some of the most important recruits left on the board for Texas and where do the Longhorns stand with them?

In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we go in-depth on the recruitments the Longhorns' staff is still working on and break them down in order of likeliest to end up in the class to least likeliest to end up in the class.

XAVIER FILSAIME, S, MCKINNEY (TEXAS) — FLORIDA COMMIT

Xavier Filsaime (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
The five-star safety took his long awaited official visit to Texas this past weekend and as you can imagine, things continue to trend away from Florida for the Gators commit. The Longhorns have several factors going for them with early playing time opportunities at safety, proximity to home, and friends and plenty of DFW area natives already in the program. NIL is also quite important in this recruitment as it is in many others and you guessed it, the Longhorns have that covered too. It also isn’t hurting that Texas is having their best season since 2009. At this point in the process with signing day on Wednesday it’s without question that the Longhorns are setting the pace for a recruitment of a player committed to a future SEC conference foe. As far as timing goes, we could see something from Filsaime’s side as soon as today but nonetheless we’re expecting the five-star to have his commitment changed to Texas prior to signing on Wednesday.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 85%

TYANTHONY SMITH, LB, JASPER (TEXAS) — TEXAS A&M COMMIT

Tyanthony Smith (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Smith has been one of the harder prospects to get a consistent read on as the 2024 recruiting cycle has started to wind down. Although Smith was adamant with Horns247 that he wouldn't be visiting anywhere this past weekend, multiple sources told Horns247 that Smith did end up making it to campus for a visit this past weekend. Due to several different official visits to Texas being scheduled and later canceled, Smith hadn’t been in Austin since March and going into the big visit weekend Horns247 reported that if he shows up at Texas we’re expecting him to sign with the Longhorns. That said, Hank South and I both entered in 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions in favor of Texas to flip Smith off of his near six month pledge to the Aggies. Due to the wild card element of Smith wanting to keep people on their toes and also the fact that Deion Sanders and Colorado is involved, I’m going with 60% instead of a higher number. Wednesday seems to be the most likely day In terms of when we could see Smith announce what his intentions are.

Chance he ends up at Texas: 60%

AERYN HAMPTON, ATH, DAINGERFIELD (TEXAS) — TEXAS COMMIT

Aeryn Hampton (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)
Obviously in the NIL era you have to keep your head on swivel with last-second moves, but 48 hours out, it seems Aeryn “Bubba” Hampton is the only Texas pledge to potentially have on flip watch. Horns247 recently reported that we were watching Alabama for the in-state standout. Both Longhorns and Tide staff visited Hampton last week. When asked, Hampton has always reaffirmed his pledge to Texas without hesitation. Still, Hampton has been committed to Texas twice and Baylor once before that. Also you can’t discount Nick Saban and Alabama when they’re pushing down the stretch. We feel like Hampton will stick but are going to be keeping an eye on things regardless.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 75%

— Hank South

ALEX FOSTER, DL, GREENVILLE (MISS.) ST. JOSEPH — BAYLOR COMMIT

Alex Foster (Photo: TW/@Alex_Foster2)
The Baylor commit used an official visit to Texas over the weekend, giving the trip high marks when we caught up with him afterwards. The Magnolia State native says the Longhorns chances are “high” at the moment. Of note, Foster said he was mulling over taking his recruitment to February and not signing this week. He announced on Twitter Sunday evening that he indeed will wait until February to sign. A lot could happen between now and then in terms of additions from either the high school ranks or Transfer Portal, but assuming UT still has interest down the stretch, you have to like Texas’ chances.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 60%

— Hank South

DEALYN EVANS, DL, LONGVIEW PINE TREE (TEXAS) — TEXAS A&M COMMIT
Evans isn’t a recruit the Longhorns have been connected with much in recent months. We did note the in-state DL as a dark-horse candidate in the class of 2024 to join the fold for UT, assuming the staff pushed for him. Could we be seeing the start of that push? Evans tells Horns247 he plans to officially visit the Forty Acres in January. He also said Texas was originally his dream school. Also of note over the weekend, Evans popped up in Instagram Live comments saying “we” when referring to Texas. Take anything on social media with a grain of salt. Assuming Evans doesn’t sign this week and does intend following through with official visits next month, Texas will be one to watch.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 35%

— Hank South

TERRANCE HIBBLER JR., DL , LEXINGTON (MISS.) HOLMES COUNTY CENTRAL — MISSISSIPPI STATE COMMIT

Terrance Hibbler (22) (Photo: Dana Robertson)
It’s hard to land kids out of Mississippi when you’re not named Ole Miss or Mississippi State, assuming one ore both schools want you. There appeared to be a window of opportunity when the Bulldogs went through a coaching transition. One source close to Hibbler’s recruitment said of Texas’ chances to flip the 6-foot-3, 285-pounder: “I think anything can happen. Bo is doing a great job recruiting him.” A recent official visit to Starkville to get to know the new staff appears to have quelled any potential wavering there could be. It looks like Hibbler will follow through and sign with the Bulldogs. If he doesn’t, though, lookout for Texas. The Longhorns hosted him on an official visit in the summer and have maintained contact. There’s certainly a level of comfort with the staff, notably Bo Davis.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 20%

— Hank South

SOLOMON WILLIAMS, EDGE, TAMPA (FLA.) CARROLLWOOD DAY
Solomon Williams
Solomon Williams (Photo: @SolomonW__)
Not many recruitments have shifted back and forth over the last six months quite like Williams’. The four-star edge rusher, at times, has been trending to Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Alabama. Those four appear to be the schools he will decide between this week, with the Aggies making a late run. Steve Sarkisian visited Williams last week and he took two visits to the Forty Acres this year, including an official visit during the Kansas game. But as we round the corner to home plate, it doesn’t seem like Texas will be the pick.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 10%

— Hank South

RYAN WILLIAMS, WR, SARALAND (ALA.) — ALABAMA COMMIT

Ryan Williams (Photo: Jason Caldwell/Auburn Undercover, 247Sports)
Williams has kept a dialogue going with the Texas staff, and he doesn’t intend to sign until February now that he has reclassified to the 2024. If he indeed does not — you can bet the Crimson Tide would love for him to make things official this week — Williams plans to take official visits in January, and Texas is on the list. Still, the five-star wideout is saying all the right things about Alabama. Williams visited Auburn on Sunday, another school working hard to flip him. He has yet to make it out to Texas. Of course his quarterback at Saraland, KJ Lacey, is committed to the Longhorns. A flip to Texas doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen at this point.

Chances he ends up at Texas: 10%

— Hank South

HUNTER ANDREWS, ATH, MAGNOLIA — UTAH COMMIT
Hunter Andrews
Hunter Andrews (Photo: @hunterandrews27)
Texas extended a late offer to the in-states Utes commit. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder mulled over making a visit to Austin this past weekend, but instead opted to stay home. He does not appear to be wavering from his pledge to Utah at this point in time. If anything changes this week, we’ll certainly have an update.

Chance he ends up at Texas: 5%

— Hank South

CLEMSON SAFETY TRANSFER ANDREW MUKUBA

Andrew Mukuba (Photo: Cory Fravel, 247Sports)
Likely the player that’s been reported on the most out of any transfer portal player considering Texas, Mukuba is an Austin native and attended Reagan and LBJ High School before taking his talents to Clemson over LSU and Texas as a member of the 2021 high school class. Mukuba made the short drive over from home to the Forty Acres for his visit this past weekend and while sources tell Horns247 the visit went well, things have been trending for Texas to land Mukuba well prior to the visit. The Longhorns have plenty of playing time and NIL opportunities to offer, Mukuba can be back home in the 512, Texas has his high school coach on staff (Jahmal Fenner), and the Longhorns are set up for continued success in 2024 which lays the groundwork for a season Mukuba could have that could place him in the first round as he hopes. Also of importance, Mukuba’s skill trainer resides in Austin but that seems to be just icing on the cake at this point. Jahdae Barron is a close friend of Mukuba's and has also been a huge part of Texas recruiting Mukuba out of the portal. Not sure on timing for when Mukuba could announce his home for next year, but I’d expect it to come sometime in the next week.

Chance he ends up at Texas: 75%

UTSA EDGE TRANSFER TREY MOORE

Trey Moore (Photo: Daniel Dunn, Icon Sportswire, Getty)
A Central Texas native who grew up in the greater San Antonio area and attended Smithson Valley high school before taking his talents to UTSA as part of the Roadrunners 2021 high school signing class, sources told Horns247 that Moore preferred Texas as his next stop the initial day that Moore entered the portal. Moore grew up a Longhorns fan and made it into Austin for a visit during the Dec. 8-10 weekend. The visit went well, but it wouldn't be the last trip Moore takes during his portal recruitment as he set up a visit to see Ohio State Dec. 15-17 before later changing his visit plans to see Tuscaloosa and Nick Saban’s Tide on that weekend instead of the Buckeyes. Texas continues to trend for Moore but there’s some hesitance on my end just because of the visit to Alabama. That said, I still view Texas as the most likely to land Moore. As far as timing goes, something happening in the next week is my expectation (not sourced intel) but I can see a scenario where Moore could drag it out into the back half of the portal window.

Chance he ends up at Texas: 60%

I have a sneaking suspicion that in a couple of years we are going to regret not pushing for Hunter Andrews.

Given that both of his parents are A&M grads, who knows whether they'd have been cool with him doing much more than giving a polite interview about maybe visiting.

Apparently he was set to take an OV but we canceled because of TyAnthony.

Can someone compare Dominic McKinley, Daelyn Evans, and Alex Foster as prospects?

McKinley is probably most like Alfred Collins. He has that same long body type with really good explosion. He would be a really effective 3 technique who could slide out to a 5 tech in a 3 man front, similar to how we use Collins.

Evans is very quick and disruptive. I would compare him to a bigger Jaray Bledsoe, or closer to a Walter Nolen style player. The dude is just cat quick and in the backfield in a flash.

Foster is just raw clay. We have no idea how big he is going to get, but I could easily see him playing at 320+ pounds. If he gets that big, he has the athleticism to be a problem, similar to Sweat.

If Foster is waiting till February to sign, than no there's guarantee they'll be a spot for him. I'd assume UT will also be recruiting Evans & McKinley and trying to set up OVs for them during January.

UT could have asked to him to wait to see what happens with Evans and McKinley.

Watching last night's IT livestream & Justin Wells is saying that Foster delaying his decision till February signing day was his decision & UT would've preferred he flipped to them and signed in December. Wells doesn't seem confident in either Evans or McKinley ending up at UT.

Overall good analysis and comparisons, but Collins has been here 4 years and I’m still waiting to see the explosiveness people talk about. I have the same issue with McKinley. Both those guys need to be Calais Campbell types. They’re not quick/explosive enough to consistently win that way at the college level, so they need to be technicians who utilize their huge frames and athleticism by stack/shed and rip and swim moves. Collins has never exhibited the work ethic to do this. Hopefully McKinley can be different.

Hopefully? I would be blown away at this point if Texas stays involved on that one. Therefore, I’d be fine if went the way of Alfred Collins for someone else.

Awhile ago Gerry made some comments on McKinley. He said he is like Collins in more than one way. I took that to mean the work ethic/love of the game. NFL talent, questionable motor.

Foster is Bledsoe. Very athletic. Super raw. Low floor/ High ceiling kid..

I meant hopefully for him, personally. I don’t expect it to happen, and I view him mainly as a class ranking fluffer.

I don’t see Foster being anywhere near Bledsoe’s athleticism. He doesn’t have the explosiveness that Bledsoe does. Poor man’s T’Vondre Sweat is much closer to his playing style.

We’ve given McKinley every chance, every reason to choose us, and it just doesn’t seem to be in the cards. I suspect it’s a cultural/Austin thing, some places just aren’t a fit. I know he’s considered a real talent, but his pursuit baffles me more than the Hampton recruitment.

Of the three, I would most prefer Evans if I had the choice. I think he gives something on the inside that we haven't had in a big framed disruptor that is a + pass rusher.

Bledsoe is a bit of a freak. I love when he gets on the field

A.) it usually means we've won

B.) Usually gives a glimpse of his freakish athleticism

I coached against Evans in track, he threw shotput and has ridiculous explosiveness. I don’t know if production in football has equaled how freakishly athletic he is but he reminds me of a Collins. I think he could slide inside and play 3 tech.

fwiw - all my lsu friends that follow LA recruiting and HS football were not impressed with McKinley late in the season and his last couple times on the field.  said he looked fat/lazy and combined that with being slow as well. As fans of the school that I would have guessed would be most likely to land him; that doesn't exactly seem like a ringing endorsement.  Possible that he's lower on the totem pole for us at this point in comparison to Foster and others.

So, noticed something about Filsaime's ranking;  if we get him, it's sure to annoy Agroids everywhere 🙂.

Here's his 247Sports history; note Filsaime has moved up 1 spot today ...

image.thumb.png.a07e6d67991bee54975cef5c6958c27c.png

The consequence of that one-spot rise?

image.thumb.png.1c77715a79148b1df3bba07e2c2f9fdf.png

Yep, he's a 5-star on 247Sports.

This could just be because of someone else moving down, etc. ... but you know one group will be sure to attribute it exclusively to a BOMC 🙂.

Hope we get him 🤞🤞🤞.

(They've come out with another update - not sure of all the changes, but screw 'em (think Robinson's still a 3-star, etc.)).
