Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls

- ESPN's Adam Rittenberg has an article on "future power rankings - Quarterbacks."  It's essentially a ranking of QB position groups.

- He has us 8th ... .  Ahead of us are

1) USC

2) Ohio State

3) Oklahoma

4) Georgia

5) Alabama (yep!)

6) Michigan

7) Your Texas Longhorns

(On a lulz note, in the top 25, he has Kansas, UTSA and Western Kentucky, but not QB Whisperer Jimbo and the Streaking Texas Aggies.  Last year they were 4th.)

To clarify, because someone will get confused - he had Texas ranked 7th this year, but 8th in 2022. Not sure if this is appropriate for the recruiting board, but here's what he said:

Things are rarely boring at Texas, especially at the quarterback position, which could go in several directions over the next three years. Quinn Ewers is back for his second season as a Longhorn, but needs to consistently show accuracy and playmaking ability. Ewers, ESPN's No. 2 overall recruit in 2021, spent a season at Ohio State before transferring, and finished the 2022 campaign at Texas with two of his better performances. But the arrival of Arch Manning creates an added layer of pressure on Ewers to keep developing. Ideally, Ewers holds down the QB1 spot through 2023 before giving way to Manning, the latest product from America's most famous quarterbacking family.

Manning finished as ESPN's No. 5 overall recruit in the 2023 class, but ranked behind quarterbacks Nelson and UCLA signee Dante Moore. He might end up pushing Ewers in 2023 before likely taking over the starting job by 2024. Not surprisingly, Texas lost Hudson Card to the transfer portal. Maalik Murphy, a second-year player with a big frame (6-foot-5, 225 pounds), could share the backup role this coming season with Manning. Murphy was ESPN's No. 250 recruit in the 2022 class.

Just read that Terry Bussey ran a 10.66 FAT hundred meters as a sophomore. His HUDL highlights show an electric athlete but it's hard to really gauge because he goes to such a small school.  On the other hand, so did Quan Cosby.

Assuming he’s not being coached by Timpson Bob Kersee, 10.66 laser at 15yo is raw speed and/or unnatural acceleration. There’s something to be said for football speed and he’d need to be coachable, but save for future injury, he’d be a huge addition imo. 10.66 at 15 is crazy.

(Very positive update on Selman Bridges.)

The Huddle: Thursday Recruiting notes & five-star on campus

Hudson Standish

— During his first two years in Austin, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has done an incredible job of getting elite talent on campus, especially when he personally invests significant time in their recruiting process. In the 2024 recruiting cycle, no recruit is a better example than Lake Belton cornerback Selman Bridges who the Horns are trending extremely well for after a recent visit to the Forty Acres last weekend for the second junior day.

Texas was relatively late to offer Bridges in mid-January but Sarkisian made it clear to Bridges that after watching his tape he viewed him as a major priority and has backed up that claim with weekly facetime calls, significant contact with the Bridges' family, and in-depth conversations about his potential football and personal fit at the University of Texas. This quote from a source about the visit summed up how well the entire meeting with Sarkisian went for the Bridges family. "The family went in with a list of questions to ask Sark and Joseph but Sark was doing such a good job talking that he ended up answering all of their questions without them having to ever even ask."

One nugget I found interesting from the weekend was the pitch Texas made to Bridges regarding the success that Jahdae Barron has had on campus considering the two share a trainer in Juice 7v7's "Bam Performance." Texas is attacking this recruitment from all angles and if this level of intense pursuit continues throughout the next few months I think it will be tough for any school to overtake the Longhorns.

— Timpson five-star ATH Terry Bussey is at Texas for a quick unofficial visit a day before competing in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Bussey was recently in Austin last Sunday for day two of the OT7 south regional but didn't have enough time to stop by campus for a visit. So today he arrived in Austin early for a stop-in at the football facilities since he can't visit tomorrow on the same day he competes in the Texas Relays. Bussey recently arrived on campus, so I'll talk to him after the visit to get details on the quick trip

Admittedly, I thought Vondrell McGree and Cody Johnson were both going to be great players - but is anyone else really excited by the possibility of getting Kedren Young?

Also, it doesn't seem like there's much out there on Kobe Black aside from that one interview he did with 247 a couple of weeks ago. Is he just a quiet kid who's tough to get a read on? Or are we behind someone else with him?

Bobby Burton: Pace of Recruiting

Quote

The pace of recruiting for 2024 is decidedly different than any in recent memory. At least the pace of commitments is. The Horns aren’t necessarily pushing for many commitments at this time. Yet they are definitely keeping themselves at the front of the line with top prospects. So what gives? Why the change in tactics? The answer is multifaceted.

- The transfer portal is playing a major role. And I’m not only talking about additions, but possible subtractions, too. It’s hard for coaches to get a firm grasp on exactly how many scholarships they have to give and what position they will need to allot them to.

- NIL is a factor. Like it or not, recruiting is effected by NIL. Many recruits now have marketing agents. Playing the field seems to be the preferred method of driving up the price. Coaches must now identify which recruits are more focused on NIL than they are the programs under consideration.

- The extra Covid year even plays a role. Again, total scholarship numbers can be effected. And wouldn’t you rather have a proven fifth- or sixth-year senior like Christian Jones return rather than another true freshman, many of whom are lottery tickets of a sort?

Those are the three biggest contributing factors. And it’s not just Texas that is slowing the pace. It’s occurring nationally. Ever since the implementation of the Transfer Portal and NIL, it seems like every cycle brings a new type of recruiting game to play. This year is no different. The question is, when will we return to a sense of normalcy in recruiting?

Seriously, I stopped at that point and audibly said “what the fuck?” Yeah, let’s not mention the top 50 player they signed at CB.

FWIW here is his response in the comments.

The best CB in the state last cycle signed with Ohio State. He held Johntay Cook to 1 reception for -4 yards in their matchup last season. Muhammad gave up a TD in the same matchup, for direct comparison sake.

But Texas also missed on Bravion Rogers, Javien Toviano, CJ Blocker, and Jayvon Thomas. There were several wasted offers sent out to others guys in-state last spring that should have never been Texas targets imo.

Cook had 3 catches for 40 yards in that game vs SOC, with a 27 yard TD catch.

here is that TD catch

Desoto won the game vs Waxahachie 42-24, they had 4 rushing TDs and 2 passing TDs. They slowed Cook down but got eaten up by other players The score was 21-3 at the half, 28-10 at the end of the 3rd. it really wasn't ever that close and would have been even more of a blowout if not for a muffed punt that led directly to a TD. i think Desoto completed 4 passes in the 2nd half.

Which is still not the same as "missed on every top CB target." Why not say "I should have said almost every top target," which everyone would have agreed with and move on with your life?

(Justin Wells) Humidor: Spring visit plans for Longhorn football targets, full men's basketball roster/recruiting rundown

Quote

The Humidor assesses Texas’ standing with three top football recruiting targets before diving into the entire Texas Longhorns men’s basketball roster, recruiting class, 2024 landscape, and portal efforts.

Terry Bussey, ATH, Timpson (Texas)

Before competing in the 2023 Texas Relays, On3’s No. 1 2024 athlete made his way over to the football facilities on Thursday. It was a great experience, Bussey told Inside Texas. Talking to Steve Sarkisian, Blake Gideon, and other staffers, Bussey got a small taste of UT football. He’s competing today in the 4×100 relays. LSU, Texas A&M, TCU, and Baylor are pushing the hardest right now, with the Aggies having a strong relationship with the 5-foot-10, 180-pounder.

Noah Carter, EDGE/ATH, Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder tells Inside Texas he’ll be taking an unofficial to Austin on April 3rd. Carter plays receiver and OLB in high school, but the Longhorns and Pete Kwiatkowski are recruiting the On3 four-star at EDGE. He visited Louisville last Friday, and has trips to Austin, Washington, and Arizona State planned this spring.

James Peoples, RB, San Antonio (Texas) Veterans Memorial

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound On3 four-star has a number of visits scheduled over the next few months. He’s at Ohio State this weekend, who has been trending strongly in his recruitment. He’ll hit the Texas spring game on April 15th and OU spring game on April 22nd. Then he’s got official visits to Oklahoma for June 16-17 and Ohio State for June 23-24.

If you’re a Texas fan, don’t be discouraged. UT and Tashard Choice are focused on two backs in this cycle – Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark. Texas has some confidence they can land both priorities in the 2024 class. To add on Clark, word out of Arizona coaching circles is that Texas holds the advantage.

Defensive line note

Texas continues to work to get defensive tackles Jayden Jackson and Kamron Beavers on campus this spring. The 6-foot-2, near 300-pound Jackson could show up in April, but June may be just as likely. Some prospects want to visit Easter Weekend, but that’s not ideal for the Texas staff.

Basketball and recruiting

Rodney Terry currently has one position to fill on his bench, Inside Texas believes. The associate head coach position has been posted by the University of Texas. Inside Texas has a pretty good handle on who the leading candidate is behind the scenes headed into the weekend. We aren’t trying to be a tease, but are going to hold the name through the weekend with the Texas staff in Houston for the Final Four.

Texas players for sure expected back:

F Brock Cunningham
F Alex Anamekwe

Texas players that can return:

G Tyrese Hunter
F Dylan Disu
G Arterio Morris – Can he block out the noise in DFW? We shall see.
F Dillon Mitchell – Has been in the facility putting work daily this week.
G Rowan Brumbaugh

2023 Prospects signed:

F Ron Holland – locked in with Texas. Terry and Brandon Chappell made in home with the Hollands Wednesday.

G AJ Johnson – Locked in with Texas. Terry and Chappell are spending time with Johnson’s main circle today.

Texas and the portal

The Longhorns have and will continue to reach out to a number of players in the portal. The current top two seen as talent and program fits are USC transfer Reese Dixon-Waters and Virginia transfer Kadin Shedrick. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Dixon-Waters, the 2023 Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year, is talking to Texas and the Longhorns are considered to have a realistic shot. The 6-foot-10.5 Shedrick is the top big man target. He has spoken with Terry and staff, and is scheduled to again next week. Indiana is seen a legit threat to win out for the North Carolina native.

2024 Hoops recruiting

Terry and Chappell were in the DFW area Wednesday to see 2024’s No. 1 overall prospect Tre Johnson. The visit went very well, as expected. There are longstanding connections with Terry and Johnson’s father, Richard Johnson Jr. The Longhorns are considered to have as good of a shot as any in contention. Those seriously in contention are Texas, Baylor and Kentucky, as of today. Johnson will have professional options if he wishes. The family turned down the Overtime Elite league last summer.

Inside Texas feels like the Longhorns are in solid positions with Johnson, 5-star wing Liam McNeeley, 6-foot-5 guard Cam Scott and 6-foot-9 forward Robert Miller III. All four will be top 35 prospects nationally when the rankings dust settles.

That's now how you drive more clicks.  Outrage generates engagement.  We wouldn't be talking about it right now if he had.

Suchomel had an interview with Justin Williams and we are in his top 3 along with Oregon and Alabama.  But yeah, it's probably Oregon and it's a bummer we don't seem to be getting any traction with the DL guy, especially considering our history with Nigerian kids.  Seems to be enamored with OU, maybe another ass kicking in Dallas will change his mind?

Saw this in the Spring Practice thread for some reason, but apparently IT reported that Modden is cool with being recruited as a CB.

Probably because it's that or he's looking at UH-tier schools.

Somebody will tell him they want him really bad at WR (maybe LSU) and he'll jump ship.  I believe CTJ has already alluded to this happening.  Plus we are getting Bridges, Gibson, and probably another high end CB/S.

The funniest part about Terrell hyping up a recruit at his own school is he was quoted in an article last cycle saying that Ohio State got Calvin Simpson-Hunt to flip from Texas Tech because they offered before the big in-state schools, including Texas. He said that if Texas would have offered earlier, they would have had a shot at the "best CB in the state"

You then go to 247 page for Simpson-Hunt and see:

He talks mad shit about everyone behind the scenes and in small groups. Allegedly. If you identified yourself as a Texas grad I’m sure he put on his Nice hat so as to not piss off the constituency of his side gig.
