Every damn donut shop in town has a sign that says they sell kolaches. I go in and ask what fruit they have in their kolaches and they always say "we only have sausage". I tell them if I wanted a klobasnek I'd ask for one.

And then everyone clapped

The late Gen-Z workforce at our office.  Coffee badging became big during the RTO wave in the last year or two, but they've taken it even further.  Badge in at 11:45, order lunch, then take an hour to an hour and a half lunch, then badge out by 3pm.  A solid 3-hour work day where they're spending half of it on lunch.  The biggest offenders are based in Austin while their managers are on the east coast, so they don't see this crap on the daily.

Okay, I am not that egregious. It's more of a 9:45 to 2:30 lol, but I work before and after my commute.  I work with too many damn women who talk incessantly all day about nothing, at the loudest possible volume.

But I did learn a bunch of people have been (on their own accord) working their own versions of 9 hour days so they can log off at 12 on Fridays, without permission.  They got busted for that.

I just got reprimanded for basically doing 9:30-2:30 in the office instead of like 8:30-4.  Not only was I doing work at home on both ends, but if I’m hitting my numbers, who gives a flying fuck?  Im sorry that i can get my work done in half the time it apparently takes half of the rest of the office who, shocker, spend most of their time gossiping and bullshitting while we are there instead of working. Oh, but they’re being seen around the office so they must be working hard. I fucking hate corporate America. Pandemic is over so now they need to reassert their dominance and keep the plebs under their thumbs.

What industry and size of employer do salary workers have that employ time tracking? I've worked from a bunch of different offices and badges were only used for security, never for logging

It's when you get paid to be in the office to collaborate with your coworkers.  When your employer pays you well to show up and do your job, SHOW UP.  We're a smaller satellite office that's hanging by a thread, and when people do crap like lunch badging and our office attendance is around 30% (when it should be 60%+), then you're risking getting our office shuttered, not to mention them taking advantage of the Ffrench benefits.

Arbitrary time requirements are an extension of sitting at school for 8 hours a day, and some businesses still treat their workers like children.

Many workers DO act like children.

But yeah in your case if you are producing and hitting whatever quota you have, you should be given autonomy. The ones who aren't producing should be more tightly restricted.

One of many ways a lot of businesses have things backwards.

I'm in fintech.  We don't actively track that, but when you get leveled, you damn well know they'll look at the badge-in data as well as other metrics (login times, meeting attendance, etc).  Our new overlords actually make you badge OUT on the way out the door, so I know they can track your overall hours.

The only collaboration happening is the constant personal life chit chatting.  Everything else is on Teams.   My firm has gone pretty much to a "you're here, the person you support is somewhere else" when they move clients around to different offices and 90% of the people I support are in Houston or DC, while I sit in Denver.  I don't need to collaborate in person with anyone.

Huhuuu... Welcome to my working life in the mid-80s. Get everything done by lunch, ask for more assignments, they'd give me dick to do, so I'd do my own freelance work at my desk, or hammer an exacto blade into the window sill so I could record its shadow as a sun dial, "research" graphics on Brøderbund games, turn up the Bangles cassette tape on my headphones.

Some clients of ours in europe, they actually track to prevent working overage. If management sees people approach maximum statutory hours for the week, they advise them to work from home so the company avoids getting fined 🫠

gov auditor once came into our (small) office and gave us a warning for not having timesheets. so we automated fake ones for everyone, completely generic - same hours for every person for every single day.

We had this shit happen at my office (state agency). They started WFH during covid and some people just couldn't be bothered to actually fucking work. But instead of singling out those fucks individually, they just punished the whole group and made them all come back to the office. So stupid.

This. Aside from one day a week where we have team meetings, I literally stare at a screen around other people staring at their screens the entire day. Yeah, I will go to my peers with a question every now and then, but nothing that couldn’t be done on slack. There is no collaborating.

My Japanese counterparts are limited to how many hours they can work per week.  Their computers will lock them out after a given amount of hours.

Years ago I was a salesman for a large industrial distributor, 100+ year old company, 100+ employees. The owner caught the top salesman playing golf on a Friday afternoon. He had been top salesman for years and had always exceeded his sales goals. This pissed the owner off, so he implemented tracking devices on all our phones. We had to be in a customers parking lot at 8 am and 5 pm. It didn't matter if we hit or exceeded all our numbers (we did), he would financially penalize us for not being in a customers office. It didn't matter if you were working on customer business or not. All it did was make good liars out of us. I'd take my phone to a buddy's business and leave it there and run errands. Within a year, all the top salespeople left and the company went out of business. And he screwed all his debtors on the way out the door too.

Friday afternoon meetings after 2-3pm are just control mechanisms by weak leaders.
I have a 2 hour ‘planning session’ permanently on my calendar.
Haven’t had that shit in current team, but previous boss loved throwing that shit on the calendar.  I missed that session quite often. I’d be like, ‘ Your college punks and ither stealers are your problem, not mine.’

I’m in SaaS sales.  If my team is hitting their numbers back off.  I hate 8-5 culture where everyone leaves 4 minutes after the boss does

Ate dinner out at a new restaurant, and ordered shrimp. It came in a thick, messy sauce with the shell and tails on. What the hell am I supposed to do with that? Any extra flavor from cooking in the shell is offset by the annoyance of having to spend ten minutes peeling shrimp and making a mess. Eff that.

Not trivial and very surly

Quote

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the world’s rarest marine mammal, with fewer than 10 surviving in the wild. It faces grave challenges, from illegal fishing nets to black-market demand for totoaba swim bladders.

Experts worry that this unique creature could disappear before most people even learn it exists.

Vaquitas are a small porpoise that only live in the northern Gulf of California. They keep getting caught as bycatch in illegal fishing trade for the swim bladders of a fish which have a market because men in China can't just take Viagra to make their dicks hard.

And fuck India

looking on the package of frozen, cooked shrimp I purchased at WM.

Fucking India?  What’s wrong with our shrimp? I was making a red curry shrimp soup, so maybe it tracks, but I was surprised.

Well it is called WORLD MARKET. But anyways. We import shrimp. Not all of it comes from Bubba Gump Shrimp.

India, Ecuador, and Indonesia are the top three countries that export shrimp to the United States.

Explanation
  • India: India is the largest supplier of shrimp to the United States. In 2023, India supplied 38% of the US's total shrimp imports.
  • Ecuador: Ecuador is the second-largest exporter of shrimp to the United States.
  • Indonesia: Indonesia is one of the top three exporters of shrimp to the United States.
Other countries that export shrimp to the United States include:

Vietnam, Thailand, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, China, and Peru.

Fucking dumbass Cajuns.

Ordered BBQ shrimp one time somewhere and it was the same thing.

Cooking shrimp within its shell adds no flavor and actually keeps much of the seasoning added when cooking out of the shrimp.

Fight me.

I call them a pig in a blanket even if they're advertised as a "kolache". I've only had push back once and they asked me if I'm from California because "real kolaches don't have fruit". Lord drop a bomb on me. Never went back.

I have seen my co-workers on a 16 person project team twice in the past 52 weeks, and the 2nd time was a pseudo work trip so that we could say goodbye to a ( beloved) fellow employee who was retiring.  We have an optional meeting without the boss where we trouble-shoot/ discuss processes and a mandatory meeting( boss is cool though) each week virtually.  We have multiple chats set up for networking/ problem-solving. If something is complex or needing direct support, we ping them on TEAMs or ZOOM.

I feel like we support the hell out of each other and the folks going through the project. 2 things happened during covid that I liked in the workplace: 1) our retail partners never had cleaner stores and backrooms.  Ever.  2) We discovered in-person officing was pretty inefficient for what we do.
