Some motherfucker in the lab I work in left an open(!) gallon jug of 95% methanol (toxic, extremely flammable, burns with an invisible flame) just sitting in the fume hood, with the exhaust fan off. Couldn't be bothered to take the 15 seconds and screw the lid back on return it to the flammables cabinet, which is like 5 feet away from the fume hood. I know who did it, even if I have no direct evidence. Who knows how long that shit has been sitting there, evaporating away.

And of course we get safety audited, and the safety nazis wrote us up for it (as they should have).

So now we all have to take a chemical safety course. 4 hours sitting in room listening to some 20 year old nerd drone on. We're lucky we didn't fined.

Sweartogod, post docs are some of the dumbest assholes alive. I'm surprised the dumb motherfucker didn't light a cigarette and immolate himself like a Buddhist monk while he was in there dicking around.

And the dingle-cherry on the shit sundae is that I have been assigned by the lab director to inventory all the chemicals and make sure they are all properly stored, with the proper paperwork filed with the safety nazis. Because the post doc who left the shit out in the first place is too busy to do it.

I have a project at work that requires caveman technology because Amish. I have been looking for an old John Deere/WheelHorse/Eaton transmission for a couple of weeks using every network I can think of. I finally posted my search to a tractor/garden tractor forum that I use occasionally. Of course , the first several responses are suggesting that I look on craigslist, ebay and facebook. No shit? Thanks, I never woulda thought of that. I thought maybe asking a group of dedicated hobbyists might get it in front of a wider audience. It's a canadian website so I suppose they are just being goshdarned nice.

When you text customer service and immediately get 4 messages back, the first that your message has been received, the second from a 'person' who introduces themselves, a third from said 'person' who says they will be happy to help, and then a fourth from said 'person' asking if this is my preferred phone number. Motherfucker that could have been one, maybe two messages, and I wouldn't have had to hear 4 notification dings in short succession. And no, I don't want you to email me, I gave you a burner phone number and that should be good enough.

Also that there's no setting on my phone that will automatically suppress notification dings for the next few minutes after one is received unless i reset it by checking the notifications in between.

Maybe it's just me but recently I've had issues at multiple businesses (typically convenience stores or fast food) where I'll make a minor purchase and the person checking me out will throw away my receipt without even asking me if I want it. Is this a thing now?

after they throw it away, say "Can I have a receipt please?" Make them fish that shit out of the trash.

I got an email from an online clothing retailer, proclaiming that they're having an amazing site-wide 10% off sale. Really, 10%? I don't give a shit about 10, come find me when you get to 25%.

Does anyone else look at buying a car as a full contact sport? I don't mind people making money but they're not going to make it all on me. My wife is due a new one. My friend in the car business retired so I'm stuck dealing with dealers now. All the dealers in Abilene are owned by 2 or 3 groups of businesses and they act like a cartel.

I went online to a local dealer and every car had a $3000 extra "warranty" added to their "no haggle" price, which was MSRP. We had a long email exchange where I told them that the extra warranty was a deal breaker and I wanted to know if they  would sell one without it, because if not I'll go somewhere else. He would never answer me directly, even after I told him to quit the BS and give me a yes or no answer. The sales manager called me and said they would but if there was great value in it and I should really consider getting it. It's not even a warranty. It says that they will fix/repair/replace certain items, solely at their discretion. Scratch them off the list.

I don't have the patience or desire to go through all the back and forth haggling bullshit. I'll walk the second time they say "let me take this deal to the manager". I've been a salesman all my life and I am immune to the process. Make me a deal and let's move on. I'm already surly and I haven't even stepped on a dealer lot yet.

It’s one of my least favorite things to do. And I’ve negotiated multi-billion dollar deals on multiple continents. Those are easier than the nonsense of car buying.

I think buying a car through Costco may be the way to go. It’s a no-negotiation deal, I think. Of course, all the stupid markups like the ridiculous warranties, undercarriage sealer, delivery fee, etc. probably still need to be declined at the dealer. Im interested if anyone’s had the experience of buying through Costco.

The car industry doesn’t even advertise the price of the car anymore. It’s just assumed that people will be perpetually in debt, perpetually carrying a car note, so the only thing people are interested in is the monthly payment. That adds an extra layer of complexity for people that buy their cars in cash.  You would think it would be easier, and you’d get a cash discount, but no. It makes it more complicated.

Yep. When you say you're paying cash, the almost always come back with "we have some great financing options." I knew a few people in the car business and they all play the game. It's like they don't understand the simple concept of agreeing on a price and paying for one. And they're afraid that if they admit to one person it's just a ploy to get more money from you, their secret will be out. Everyone I know in the industry defends the BS.

I've actually had to threaten people to simply get my keys back after they took our car back to establish a trade-in value then refused to give them back for various reasons.

It's not that I really mind that word is built around a style formatting concept and so if I hit tab after typing a number it assumes I'm making a numbered list and applies the appropriate style.

It's that so many of the styles are Mickey Mouse shit. Multiple colors, font sizes, fonts, what the God damn fuck. This is a professional document I am writing not a community fucking newsletter. Why isn't there a preset selection of styles for "someone is paying me a lot of money to write this and it should look the fucking part"?

add to that when collaborators copy into a set template and all fonts/formats go to shit. Bitch, why are their 6 normals now?

I set the template and styles. EVERYTHING SHOULD BE LIKE THAT.

Oh and fuck people who copy and paste one sentence. You could not type it?

Trader Joe’s and Sprouts were out of eggs, so I went to a local Asian supermarket that always has eggs. MFers wanted $15 for a dozen organic eggs.

They were $7.50 less than 2 weeks ago.

Because they aren’t selling a car (dealers make $0 on cars). They are selling financing/a loan, add-ons (warranty), and an avenue to future service revenue.
Last car we bought (end of 2020, right before car prices shot up), I planned to pay cash, already had a really great price. Sales team begged us to finance it, offered us another $1k off if we financed. “Can I just pay it off after?” “Yeah.” Done deal.
Financed the purchase. First payment came due, and I paid the total about owed. But the sales guy probably got a $1500 loan origination commission in exchange for the $1k price break he gave me, so we both won.

American auto dealers ARE cartels. State laws around franchising grant geographic exclusivity, preventing competition. It auto has protections against manufacturer terminating dealer agreements unless there are obvious and egregious causes.

The best solution is buying direct from manufacturer, online. Like Tesla. (go ahead CR boys).  But many states have or have had laws prohibiting direct sales from manufacture.

It's the most illiberal anti-market thing.

It should be noted there's less fuckery with dealerships in Europe. The majority are still privately owned, but there's less protective clause around them. Dealerships don't carry large new car inventory where they go through pricing cycles, and they act more or less as agents for you to order a new car from manufacturer. The general pricing attitude is take it or leave it.  It's a cleaner transaction.

Well I might have dodged a bullet anyway. I think my wife wants to keep her 9 year old, 95K mile Hyundai. She's driven several new cars, from cheap to semi-expensive and seems to have no interest. She kept complaining that they didn't have CD players and none of the 50 way adjustable seats felt right.

I'm retiring this year and will lose my company truck. I guess I'll buy me something instead.

The vehicle financing deal is the way to go. I avoid trade-ins absolutely. Just make sure the finance plan allows early pay-off - "My grandma's dying of cancer, and I expect to inherit some cash in not too long... so..." Get'em down as far as they'll go, drive away, and when the payment is due, pay it off. Dealer and salesone get the best they can do, and so do you.

They make more money in the F&I office than negotiating the sales price.  No one reads all the docs presented and once they get you "signing" they can slip all manner of docs in front of the buyer including assigning manf credits to the dealer etc.  Never mind the whole holding points on the loans or selling warranties.

I don't know if this is trivial or not but I'm going to rant so...

I am so sick and tired of infrastructure trash.

I had commented on another thread about picking up litter in our neighborhood and on my walks since I can no longer run (per doctor). So I walk. I pick up beer and spiked tea cans. I pick up energy bar wrappers. I pick up Whataburger, McDonalds, and Chik-fil-a bags and containers. I pick up plastic coffee cups from Dutch Bros, Dunkin', and Starbucks. But the thing that pisses me off is the large amount of trash left behind by road construction and other municipal uses such as old signage, orange barricade cones, sand bags, posts...and telecom wires, boxes, covers to conduits, phone poles that were replaced by larger ones and left lying in a ditch, silt barriers complete with t-posts, and so on.

No one seems willing to claim this trash after the job or original use is complete and many of these objects are too large for one person to handle and haul back to place in the regular trash collection so I just fume about it.

Hmmfph. Surly indeed.

Want to become Surlier?

That belongs to the county. If you see a road sign and pick it up and take it to the recycling place, they have to store it until the county comes and gets it. So it sits. Means owner of the business has no space. Oh, and you cannot buy that. Nope. It has to be reclaimed and processed by the county.

Construction contractors are horrible slobs, so the trash you are seeing may not strictly be because of the city/county.  Many contracts require the contractor to do the clean-up after construction is finished, but if the contracting entity doesn't ride their ass and hold their feet to the fire, they'll cut their costs by skipping the clean-up.

I was somewhat aware of this. For example, TxDot was doing some work on a state FM road in the city where I live and the traffic signing and marketing company, etc  they hired left the silt screens up and even better the posts to which the detour and other signs were attached. I can't remove those even if I wanted I don't think although we do own a crowbar. Although I really hate to put myself on some annoying Karen list, especially in this day and age, I'm considering compiling a list with photos and just sending it in to the city council or local news channel. After all, its offseason and I'm feeling a little surly about it. I guess it is related to the enshittification thread in a way (but that might be in CR so I'll stop there) but as annoying as the cups and food containers are at least they're somewhat easily removed.

I usually park my fair distance away from entrances because door dings. But man watching people park as close as possible meanwhile they drive by 7 open spaces in a row just to park in between cars and save 30 feet of walking really makes me surly

Especially those(women) driving 80K SUVs

2. For what was once an innovative tech service, paypal has been such a shitpile.

Once in a blue moon that I have to use it I have to lift mountain and earth to restore access, because of their draconian stone age verification measures.

Its amazing there isnt more consumer activism against the car dealership model.

I think the entire country is united in their disdain for car dealerships. They hate them more than telecomms, but while everyone grits their teeth at paying $50/mo for Verizon, nobodys really mobilizing against the car dealerships ripping them off on $50,000 trucks.
