YouTube ads.  I got them blocked on desktop, but can't do the same on smartphone unless you run it through browsers or sketchy 3rd party apps.

So I caved and paid $8 for the Premium Lite subscription.

What also makes me surly is if you're typing direct from consciousness, you think "8 dollars" but have to invert the order to "$8"

Speaking of annoying phone calls, I accidentally answered one Wednesday.  Some yahoo wanted me to switch my auto insurance.  I told 'em we were self-insured and didn't need their service.  Tone followed by "uh......what's self-insured"? " Well, if you have to ask you can't afford it" and hung up.

As a recovering insurance agent, this is funny.

I was in SF for climate week.  Attended and hosted quite a few events.  Most were great none were horrible.  The usual plan is to sign up for a bunch of events and then once accepted, decide which one to go to.  The challenge is you have no idea how big the crowd will be.

One of them was a dud.  8 people showed up including a couple who was clearly friends of the host.  Found out they lived in Austin but were from SA, went to utsa.  Group did an intro and the young guy said “moved out here for work” while the wife is “I’m a hippie, part time volunteer, etc “ sounds great though I’m curious how they’re surviving on one salary in SF.  Chatted the guy up and thought he may have been an engineer. Nope.  He let it slip that he worked for a conservative church. 20 minutes later, the lady says to me and my colleague, who is indeed conservative himself “glad you’re here.  The hippie story is a cover up.  I’m a pro life activist “

be comfortable in your own skin people.  No need to lie

Yeah, I'm moderately liberal in a fairly conservative community and I've never shied away from my beliefs publicly.  I hear people in political minorities on both sides claim a need to do that fairly often and I just don't quite get it.  I'm not out there vociferously blasting my politics, but if someone asks me or engages me on the topic I'm honest about it.

But it's probably easier for me because everything about my life would lead someone to think I was a Republican, and I'm not a small guy either, so I generally haven't had to worry about people fucking with me.

Yea and they’re a nice enough couple I’d even say kind.   And yea it could be a safety thing.  I wouldn’t go around SF screaming I’m pro life either.not all stereotypes are true of course but a young couple from SA may not align politically with the most liberal city in the US

Yeah, same same for me. Bald, white, oldish, live in rural Texas, drive a pick up, wear cowboy boots fairly often, talk with a Texan drawl. Cowboy hat if out in the sun for extended periods of time (which is fairly frequently because of my job).

I generally keep my politics to myself (irl at least), unless the other guy brings it up first. I'm old school in the sense that you don't talk politics or religion except to close friends/family. That's getting harder and harder to live by as shit keeps getting worse and worse.

Cuts both ways, both conservatives and liberals mistake me for a conservative. Sometimes its funny, sometimes its annoying. Most times, whatever.

I agree this is old school, and I'm the same way.  But I also think that this is one of the problems that we have.

We're taught not to talk politics or religion in polite company.  Instead, families, churches, and schools should be teaching children and other people how to have a civil conversation about these topics with someone that disagrees with you.

That's the skill that's lost--many people on every point of the political and religious spectrum lose their minds when someone disagrees with them (which is why I avoid the CR like the plague).

Just have a civil conversation with me, that's all I ask.

Spectrum is running an add. Young couple taking an across the country road trip. The female takes 8-10 photos of the places they see...every one of them a selfie. Bitch, I believe you that you went to the Grand Canyon, you don't have to show me photographic evidence. Get out of the picture and let the Grand Canyon be the subject, you self-important twat.

I've seen plenty of that in real life to not have to point to an ad to get surly about it.  Beautiful landscapes, works of art, whatever and people think their photos won't be complete without their ugly mugs in them.

Look at the differences in these crowd shots. Put the phone away. Enjoy the moment.

Gonna have to disagree with you there hoss. If I want a GREAT picture of the Grand Canyon or other monumental spot, I’d buy a postcard taken by a professional.

Photos with family and friends remind us of the good times we had together while on a vacation together.

Looking at the photo album on my phone, the few photos without people are of receipts for my expense statement.

I don't disagree with your general point, but Jordan's shot was a game- (and championship) winning shot from one of the best games of all time, and LeBron's was just a routine jumper that happened to break the all-time scoring record.

I'm sure plenty of shitheads would have had their phones out if such a thing was possible in 1998, but the circumstances of each picture are quite different.

I know you’re not disagreeing with me, but what’s the point of taking your own picture of a historic moment which has blanket media coverage?  It’ll be a crappy photo and you won’t see the moment with your own eyes.

You’ll see it through a screen, the same as if you were sitting at home. And there will be thousands of professional photos of the moment that will be infinitely better than your phone shot.

Yeah I don’t get that. I can find amazing professional photos of tons of places on the internet. It’s called a memory, a photo of me at those places. Whether it’s alone, with friends, whatever.

The smoothbrains who need a photo need it to post and gloat about on social media.

LEGOs were so much better when I was a kid. Inside most boxes, there were good sized generic pieces, 1x8s, 2x6s, flat 2x10s, etc. You could actually build something with them, break it down, and build something different with the same pieces. I had space LEGOs which had a few custom canopies and triangular shapes, but that was it

The LEGO models now have tiny, itsy bitsy pieces, and are so fragile. My boy built a Maclaren F-1 car, and the largest pieces (other than the chassis) were a 3x3 flat piece and a 1x6 with a curved top. I picked it up to look, and parts started falling off. I wasn't even holding it hard, just that a lot of pieces were held on by 1 stud.

My son wants to KraGle it, and I don't disagree.

Yep, lego panels piss me off. Bitch, I can build the wall, I don't need one piece.

Their architecture sets are good. Pretty basic. Working on the pyramid tonight.
