Just curious, why wasn't baylor allowed to bring in substitutes for that FG attempt ???  Clock would have run out, and horny toads lose. 😋

"There seems to be a loophole in the college substitution rule"

The mass subs at the end of the TCU vs. Baylor game had the wheels turning for coaches the past few weeks.

DOUG SAMUELS  7 HOURS AGO

After watching TCU race their field goal unit on the field with no timeouts to rush a kick to win the game against Baylor a few weekends ago, the conversation came up in coaching circles that there's a loophole in the substitution rule just waiting to be exploited.

After a spike on second down to stop the clock with 22 seconds left, TCU ran the ball on third-and-seven with no timeouts left, forcing the field goal unit to rush the field while offensive players quickly trotted off.

As a refresher, here's how the end of that game played out.

NCAA rules state that once the offense initiates a substitution that officials cannot allow the football to be snapped until the defense has a chance to make its own substitution and the outgoing player leaves the field.

However, as that TCU mass substitution took place, you'll notice something clearly missing - there was no official standing over the ball allowing the defense the same opportunity to sub.

Following that rule to the letter of the law would have robbed TCU of an opportunity to get that kick off in a timely manner. So, if officials have some leeway in that type of situation, there certainly seems to be a loophole waiting to be exploited by a bold coach late in a game, or perhaps a half.

Imagine this:

That same type of situation happens at the end of a half, or game, where there is a bit more time on the clock, and an audacious coach has put a package together with their kicker (and perhaps even holder and short snapper on it to fully sell it) and while they initially line up in a field goal formation...they quickly shift out of it.

They shift into something that is a personnel nightmare for the defensive personnel that was left on the field - I envision someone going quads to one side with three of those guys being tight ends and one being an electric athlete while the kicker becomes the single receiver on the other side - and ultimately dial something up that takes a shot at the end zone against a defense left frazzled and outmanned.

They go for the jugular...and are successful.

As soon someone does execute that to win a game, defensive coaches will surely appeal to the NCAA to crack down with a solution to close the loophole.

For now, it seem like the type of opportunity that's waiting for the right situation, and the right coach. When that happens, however long that may be, better bet we'll be revisiting this piece.

Cause that writer didn’t read the rules, VIII is pretty much the situation and clearly states that they won’t hold the ball and wait.

VIII. Late in the first half Team A is out of timeouts. A pass play on third down ends inbounds at the B-25 short of the line to gain with the game clock showing 0:10. Facing fourth down and three, Team A immediately hurries its field goal team onto the field. RULING: Team B should reasonably expect that Team A will attempt a field goal in this situation and should have its field-goal defense unit ready. The umpire will not stand over the ball, as there should be no issue of the defense being uncertain about the next play.

IX. Late in the first half Team A is out of timeouts. A pass play on third down ends inbounds at the B-25 short of the line to gain with the game clock showing 0:30. Facing fourth down and three, Team A gives no indication as to its next play until the game clock reads 0:10. They then rush their field goal unit onto the field, and Team B then hurries to respond. RULING: The umpire moves to the ball to prevent the snap until Team B has had a reasonable opportunity to get its field-goal defense unit onto the field. The umpire will step away when he judges that the defense has had enough time. If the game clock reads 0:00 before the ball is snapped after the umpire steps away, the half is over.

I still wonder wtf Sonny was thinking giving the starting job to Chandler Morris. Good thing he made the right choice in the end and turned it back over to Duggan. Like my mother(who is a TCU alum) said going into the Texas game, "if Chandler Morris was QB TCU would be 6-4 or 5-5."

If Max is truly leaving, no way Morris gets them back to the Big 12 title game next season.

Of course not. The model that schools like KSU, ISU, OSU, BU and TCU take is to build a team of upperclassmen, compete, and then start over. These are not dynasties.

Their three star players can compete because they overcome differences in strength (with four and five stars) by having four years of S&C work. They overcome differences in speed by having enough time in the system that they know where they are running to from the snap (sometimes before).

TCU has been 3rd in B12 recruiting for a decade. They don’t have UT or OUsux level of blue chips, but there are plenty of 4* guys across their depth chart. This isn’t the 1980s TCU anymore.
They won’t ever have the big bucks of UT, tOSU, etc. for NIL so won’t ever get top 10 classes, but it appears they’ll be just fine with top 20 or so classes.

Nah. Here are the numbers.

Recruiting  247  4*/total class #
cycle      rank
2018       25th,   4/24
2019       32nd,   4/27
2020       23rd,   7/20
2021       44th,   3/15
2022       28th,   4/14
   Average 30.4   22/100 = 22%

Below are 3 teams with similar recruiting that made the playoff. Interestingly, each school only made the CFP once with the coach who took them that year.
2015 Michigan St
2016 Washington
2021 Cincinnati

2022 TCU went 5-1 in one score games. They're ballers and fun to watch. What they've done is special because it's rare.

But under the present CFP system, you could expect this to have been a one off year, just like for those other teams. With the new 12 team CFP and OU leaving the the B12 (Sooners won 13 of 23 conference titles since 2000), the rules may change.

I would be surprised if that was correct. Not that it matters because they haven't won an outright title since they've joined the conference.

TCU’s rank in 247 B12 recruiting rankings for the last 10 years:

2022: 8, 4 4*
2021: 6, 2 4*
2020: 3, 9 4*

2019: 3, 4 4*, 1 5* (Evans)

2018: 3, 5 4*

2017: 3 4 4*

2016: 3, 9 4*

2015: 6, 1 4*

2014: 7, 2 4*

2013: 5, 3 4*

My recollection was skewed, @quigley.  You’re right, they haven’t been 3rd every year for the last decade, as I thought. They did hit that 5 out of the last 10 years, and especially in the last 6 years have added a fair amount of 4* talent to the roster. They’ll do well this year, and appear to be set up for a good run in the new B12.

They haven’t, and won’t, approach blue blood recruiting standards. But they can do well in the new B12 with classes in the 20 range.

For 2023, they’re currently sitting at 3rd, with 5 4*.

I looked back 5 yrs because that's most of the players on this team. Good to look back further. The new B12 probably won't have recruiting powerhouses so if they're top 20 consistently, they'll probably be at the top of the conference.

This is the model for probably 90% of FBS programs.

Agree, which is why I think one of the biggest blueblood advantages is depth and ability to withstand injuries. A lot of what makes a 5 star a 5 star is early physical development. The bluebloods with these players can plug in true freshmen if needed. The rest usually can't, which is a big reason my team flailed late in the season, too many injuries resulting in too many weaknesses.

Sources: TCU bolstering recruiting staff with longtime FBS personnel director

Dave Roberson has been a key figure at Arkansas State, Utah State

JOHN BRICE     8 HOURS AGO

After spending two years as Utah State’s director of player personnel, Dave Roberson is climbing to a Power 5 program for a key recruiting role.  Sources tell FootballScoop that Roberson is poised to take a key role in the recruiting department for Sonny Dykes’s TCU Horned Frogs program, which faces Georgia Monday night for the College Football Playoff championship.

Roberson has been a long-time personnel ace for Blake Anderson, helping Anderson to tremendous success at Arkansas State and then joining Anderson at Utah State.

TCU had a need emerge for help in its recruiting department after Bryan Carrington, who worked in both recruiting and as an offensive analyst for the Horned Frogs, departed last month for a role on Kenny Dillingham’s Arizona State staff.

Roberson has experience both in the world of recruiting and personnel as well as on-field coaching. In addition to work as an offensive quality control coach for Joe Paterno and Bill O’Brien at Penn State, Roberson helped coach the defensive line at Southern Miss under Larry Fedora and outside linebackers coach at Savannah State, among other stops earlier in his career.
