Can I ask a question?

What’s the surl consensus on the new Head Coach?  I really don’t want to read through the trash on the football board. Just give me the Bloomberg version, I don’t need the overheated MSNBC/FOX version.  I already know about the Meyer shit (I.e we might have gotten him, but we didn’t, insert excuse/reason Y here)

I know I risk bringing the demons of the football board into this forum, but I trust we can behave like adults.

He turned around Washington from dogshit to mediocre.
He was fired from USC for alcoholism

He is a good OC under Carrol and Saban

Unless we start outbidding Aggy, Bama, LSU for recruits the he will be fired in 3/4 years

Crib notes:

-some hyper-rich cabal of UT alum assholes pulled $15 M out of their couch cushions to fire our asshole coach.

-the asshole we really wanted rejected us due to health reasons (he was a mentor to a serial killer - did we miss out or did we dodge a bullet?)

-we landed a currently-sober, but recently-alcoholic coach with a .600 record in his past head coaching jobs.  He may or may not be an asshole.

-whether or not the rest of the football world will see us (UT) as assholes depends on whether or not our new coach beats OU and wins the Big 12 asap.

General George Patton was an asshole.

So is Tom Herman.  So is Nick Saban.  Results determine whether history judges us as good assholes or bad ones.

Did either of those two guys ever hit a man in the back of the head with a beer bottle in a bar fight before the other guy knew the bar fight was starting?

We can safely say "no."

But who knows what Sarkisian has done. I think if he hasn't done that yet, he will, soon.

Memes have taught us one lesson: cold-cock with a beer bottle and you are a villain.   Cold-cock with a can of Twisted Tea and you are possibly the next hero in the 2021 Marvel Universe.

Short of a small handful of coaches that aren’t coming, everyone else will always be a crapshoot. If you catch the right coach at the right time, sometimes you beat the odds, but the odds are always against you. Once Mack went downhill, it was almost guaranteed to be a long walk in the wilderness.

I’m always going to root for the guy in recovery to make good. His sobriety is a valid concern for anyone associated with UT, but as long as he has a plan and support system in place, I’m not going to hold it against him unless it becomes a problem.

His list of QB protégés is elite and he appears to be a brilliant and flexible offensive coach. Hopefully he picked up some of that Saban mojo. If he succeeds, I think that these will be the reasons that it seems so obvious in hindsight.

The odds are that he’ll be mediocre, but I’d say that for any coach other than Meyer. Getting upset that this coin flip is marginally better or worse than some other coin flip seems pointless to me.

Provincialism. More people in Georgia + Florida, and one or two of them appear inclined to play football.

Failure to recognize the competition.  It is trivially easy for a well-coached UT team to own the entire state.  It is extraordinarily difficult for one school to own Georgia + Florida.

I have heard that there are other teams in the country. Our legends tell of this. I did not say "own [insert state]" I said "recruit the whole damn country."

It makes no sense to spread the effort as paper thin as other schools are forced to do when a team can focus on a small, low-risk high-reward region close to home.  You know this.   Nobody is saying there is no good reason to look at top recruits nationwide -- Ricky Williams is a Californian, for fuck's sake.  It made sense to target him.  It would be far more difficult to focus on Ricky if half our staff was spread all over the lower American South (plus).

It's good to be the King of Texas. Win Texas recruiting and you get interest from recruits - nationwide.

TLDR: Texas Recruiting is our easiest road to excellence (and landing guys like . . .  Chris Simms).

Correct. And Bijan Robinson is from AZ. So is Jake Smith. Herman was already trying to do this.

You lockdown Texas and cherry-pick the rest of the country. You don’t try to recruit the SEC territory like you’re a local school. It’s a poor allocation of resources.

Tom was exposed as a fraud in the very first game against Maryland at home. All the bullshit we had seen in the Charlie era, stupid penalties, bonehead coaching decisions, special team fuckups, was on full display in that one single game. Right there at the start.  The last 4 years have been dead to me as a result. This outcome was inevitable.

Fair analysis in that both Biden and Sark have failed spectacularly whenever they're thrust into the starring role, but they work well as an underling to an actual good leader. And yet, both will be better than the previous guy.

Sarkisian should be an upgrade over TH in these areas:

  • Had more time at big time programs and the NFL to learn to manage the machine
  • Does not come off as a douche
  • Seems able to adapt his scheme as needed
  • should be able to turn around recruiting
  • should have a better network of assistant coaches to pull from

I'm hoping it works out as a true recovery and redemption story.
