Texas car title transfer

Recommended Posts

For the first time in my 59 years of life, I'm selling a vehicle privately instead of trading it in. Car was a lease and I decided to buy it from the leasing company, figured that instead of giving it back and paying a disposition fee I'd try to sell it at a profit (even after paying tax a second time).

Advertised the car in a few places and I immediately had a buyer.

Got the signed title from the leasing company and went down to the tax assessor office to reregister the car in my name so I could sell to the buyer. I was told it could take up to 20 business days to get the new title? Why would it take that long? All they are doing is verifying information on a screen and putting a blue piece of paper into a laser printer. Does it actually take 20 business days or is that just a worst case scenario? I'd like to get this sold as quickly as possible since I'm paying insurance and the note on the balloon payment and every extra day eats into how much I'll clear. Thanks.

Seems odd.  I recall in the past doing a title transfer and, as you describe, they printed the new title on the spot.

I have a couple random car title questions...

About a year ago I was going to give my truck to a friend of mine while I was living out of the country; long story short he signed the transfer section on the back of the title but we never ended up filing anything.  The truck is still registered in my name.  Am I able to write "void" or something over the section where he filled out his info?  Or would the best plan be to just get a new title.  And if I do need a new title, can I do that at the tax assessor office or will I need to go to the DMV?  I just tried to make an appointment at the DMV and there's nothing available...

Thank you for any feedback

I think I would get a replacement title.  Eventually, you will want to sell or transfer the vehicle to someone - presumably not your friend.  You can get title stuff done at the county tax assessor/collector office.

Check for tolls

I finally received the title IRL maybe 1 month ago, however when I visited the tax office here in Drip, I found out about the "signature on the back" thing.

I mailed it back to him with a SASE & the required form.

Hope to receive a return inside of another week.
