well sure. i didn’t even know the capitol was increasing security or who made that call, but clearly there was a lapse on wed and that’s typically when things happen, often some sort of overreaction.

did the metal detectors really “create problems”?  not likely. did the energy that was put into this deprive other potentially productive efforts?  i doubt it.

cops are dead, quitting, getting suspended, getting fired, and committing suicide. yeah, maybe it’s time to take a look at the security situation around the capitol and people tasked with protecting it from armed surrectionists - especially with a few big events coming up.

just a thought.

Again, I don't disagree. But if you're going to put metal detectors in congress, you need to do the leg work ahead of time to understand how you can mandate and enforce those metal detectors being required to enter the building.

Putting metal detectors in and not foreseeing Republicans doing the most obvious thing in the world and refusing to go through or fucking stepping around them is ridiculous. How was that scenario not accounted for prior? Whoever was in charge of that should have had their ducks in a row and figured out their legal options to enforce it. When they put them in they should have send a memo out that outlined the changes, the legal standing for making the change, and what the consequences for stepping around them would be (ideally arrest). And then actually follow through.

If it's completely unenforceable, which it appears to be, then why do it? Congratulations, you've made sure all of the sane congresspeople don't get their Leatherman in while the idiots just walk around the detectors with their pistols. Incompetence. Really great job everyone.

A symbolic metal detector that is completely useless, adds no value, and isn't enforceable sounds like something Trump would do. If you do something that sounds like something Trump would do, you are probably not a competent person or organization.

No effort is being made to actually do this. Instead it's passive aggressive security theater and posting, neither of which is real work and both of which make things worse.

Look at how much of the 1/6 insurrection was livestreamed by the traitors. They were out there for the clout, and apparently that's what our politicians are out there for, as well. It's a bunch of fear porn right now on Twitter and elsewhere. Pictures of the sleeping troops with "OH MY GOD YOU GUYS OH MY GOD!" Meanwhile... nothing is actually happening and the entire area around the Capitol is empty.

Is the MAGA horde going to literally burrow from underground and through the floor of the rotunda?

I'm not saying leave it undefended. The NG could be stationed a couple of blocks away at the Metro PD or one of the other nearby gov't buildings and then they go to the Capitol when it's necessary.

Them being asleep on the floor in the visitor's center is an advantage of what... 5 minutes? Maybe 10? Seriously think through what you think is going to happen that will require an NG response that requires them to be right there instead of a few blocks away.

Get the pigs out.

The advantage is fighting from inside a defensible position and fighting through people already on site.  You're acting like there isn't a road system that leads directly to the capitol that some cars full of MAGA dudes couldn't exploit.  The next event wont be a meandering bunch of Karens with some random hardcore guys that are livestreaming their jaunt to the capitol.  It will likely be armed, organized, and focused on killing members of congress.

Metro Police probably got some nice interlocking fields of fire from surrounding buildings/and nearby grassy knolls as well.

You have no idea what you're talking about. We don't even have to go abroad to find counterexamples, we can look at the history of this very country starting with its founding.

That's not true, the people were being taxed and eventually made an example of and were given zero representation in the government that was levying these punitive measures on them. Considering it was happening from across and ocean by people who had never stepped foot over that ocean and had no idea what was needed that's a form of oppression. Even the civil war had people, as evil as they were, who were having their entire economic way of life taken away from them. That means of production was evil as it gets but you can still see why they'd fight to keep it given the economic advantages it afforded them.

These goobers literally have every single advantage of every law and benefit from the unjust application of laws in this country. No one on the democrat side is attempting to take away their means of earning a living or alter it in any way. No one is telling them they can't worship whatever twisted religion they want. If you can think of an other example in history where a group who was the beneficiary of every law and rule in the land tries to overthrow it's government I'd like to learn about it.

And I can't even believe I have to think this about our Capitol...    Keeping them inside allows them to exploit interior lines.  If one area is in crisis, forces can be shifted to meet the threat much more quickly.  If they are 5 minutes away and on the other side of the building, when minutes could determine success or failure, having to respond like that could be deadly.

Members have an exemption to carry weapons in the building, but they are prohibited from having them on the floor.  So them bypassing the detectors to enter the building makes sense.  Its a floor rule, so I don't think it would rise to the level of arrest, just like house rules about masks, decorum, etc.  If there is a floor rule banning weapons, I don't know what the confusion is.  Apply whatever sanctions are on the books at the people that violate it, or try to avoid the metal detectors to make enforcement possible.  If they don't enforce it, I agree, its more political theater than actual concern about the rules.

I didn't have the sound on, hoping there would be captions.  There weren't, but the guy 45 seconds in made me think he was speaking in German.  Then the rest of the people seemed to be speaking in German also.  Weird, right?

You've basically described fascist rebellions. Fascism is a middle and upper-middle class response to the increasing prosperity of who they see as lower classes of people. The threat as they see it isn't a loss of property or freedom or their lives but a loss of privileged social status.

You'd think we how f'ed his businesses will be after this (see NYC cancelling contracts with Trump businesses), he would go ahead and resign. That's his only way to save any sort of face. Instead, he's literally going to go down swinging, dragging his entire empire down with him. He truly cannot admit either defeat or being wrong.

My understanding is that Boebert ended up going around the detector and carrying whatever she had onto the floor (assuming a swiss pistol that she's probably never loaded herself because manually loading it would mess her nails up and she can't figure out the fast loader).

Fascist movements are often reactionary responses to suppress popular egalitarian reform movements in a democracy. They’re usually AstroTurfed by the wealthy (to protect their wealth/power/influence) and often aligned with the church.

It’s an ideology rooted in greed, intolerance, and violence.

Yep.  There's also this:

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/38593/evacuations-during-capitol-siege-shine-light-on-vast-underground-tunnel-network

With so many avenues of approach available, and the potential that the capitol police are sympathetic or outright supportive to this movement, the NG being in the building absolutely makes sense.  The NG are simply a delaying force, the real heavy hitters like Capitol Police CERT, ATF and FBI SWAT, SS CAT would be the elements that would be nearby and ready to respond if shit gets real.  My guess is at least one of those units is within the building(s) as a QRF with others on various levels of hot standby.

Yea, I guess that's the problem.  Pelosi or someone should hold her and anyone else that went around them to account.  Enforce the rules, or get rid of the detectors.

Also.....it's good and effective fear porn.

Want to cosplay a revolution?  Cool.  This is how that theater works.  If this is all being done to make an impression on the people, then game on, motherfuckers.  Let the people see troops loyal to the Constitution stationed to defend against the MAGAs.  It makes it visibly clear that MAGAs are anti-American, anti-law-and-order, and anti-Rule of Law.

Wanna play theater?  Then let's play, bitches.  This is, in part, the government engaged in counter-propaganda.  Which is better than what they've BEEN doing -- getting utterly outflanked by it, with deadly consequences.

Great stuff.

I’d add that we haven’t been outflanked by propaganda, the Trump government has been RUNNING the propaganda. The transition to a lawful government is the start of government run counter-propaganda.

Well that, or start running TV ads, showing how our kids have to go through them every day at school, but GOP politicians are above it all.

Good stuff. I didn't think it was effective or worth commenting on at first, because it seemed to do nothing except reassure and comfort folks who are fearful that a real revolution was afoot, but the more folks like Geraldo and whomever else will turn their allegiances then it's really a valuable show.
