Luke Easterling of Draft Wire released his top 300 prospects in this year’s draft class on Wednesday. Although eight players will represent the Longhorns in the 2021 NFL draft, only four made the list.

  • No. 31: Joseph Ossai, EDGE (second-round grade)
  • No. 42: Samuel Cosmi, OT (second-round grade)
  • No. 146: Caden Sterns, S (fourth-round grade)
  • No. 241: Sam Ehlinger, QB (sixth-round grade)

It is now, but it wasn't last week.

The Indiana & Northwestern games gave teams reason to doubt. And then there is the whole... um... well... "traditional" way of looking at things that teams frequently employ when looking at QBs.

From Dane Brugler's top 300: https://theathletic.com/2530672/2021/04/21/2021-nfl-draft-top-300-big-board-trevor-lawrence-patrick-surtain-ii-trey-lance-the-talent-runs-deep/

  Quote

38. Samuel Cosmi, OT, Texas (6-foot-6, 314 pounds)
Cosmi blocks with quickness and urgency in pass protection, usually marrying his eyes with his hands and base to stay square. He will give ground vs. power but uses sink-and-settle to recover and relies on his posture to create leverage. Overall, Cosmi lacks overwhelming size/power traits, but he wins with lateral positioning and strong hands to cover up edge speed and execute in the run game. He projects as a solid NFL starter.

Expand
  Quote

47. Joseph Ossai, edge, Texas (6-foot-4, 256 pounds)
An impressive pursuit player, Ossai is consistently around the football and makes plays that he has no business making due to his play speed and hustle. While he plays quick, he wins more with effort and his body stiffness hinders his ability to win at the top of his rush. Overall, Ossai is a linear athlete who lacks fluidity in his rush or redirect, but his foot is always on the gas with the compete skills and locked-in effort that helps mask some of his issues. He projects as a physical 3-4 edge defender.

Expand
  Quote

180. Caden Sterns, DS, Texas (6-foot-0, 202 pounds)
Sterns is a clean mover in the deep half with the feet and athleticism to collect himself and stay in position. However, he is more of a “see it” than “sense it” player and appears more focused on not making a misstep rather than jumping routes. Overall, Sterns has functional range with efficient footwork to gather and go, but he struggles to anticipate, lacks grit and doesn’t have the tape of a playmaker. He projects as an overly conservative deep safety with durability concerns.

Expand
  Quote

240. Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas (6-foot-1, 220 pounds)
The term “gamer” tends to be overused for tough-yet-flawed quarterbacks, but it sums up Ehlinger perfectly – it felt like the Longhorns always had a shot in close games because of his gutsy, resilient spirit and versatile skill set. As a passer, he has an adequate arm, but is often tardy with his decisions and needs to see things quicker if he is going to make plays through the air in the NFL. Overall, Ehlinger is not an anticipation thrower and his pocket presence leaves a lot to be desired, but his competitive toughness and dual-threat ability give him a chance to be a backup in the right situation, similar in ways to Jalen Hurts’ evaluation in the 2020 draft.

Expand
  Quote

244. Ta’Quon Graham, DT, Texas (6-foot-3, 292 pounds)
Graham has a projectable frame with long arms and massive hands to get underneath blockers’ pads, control the point and shuck his man. Despite his college backfield production, his current third-down value is questionable due to limited reaction quickness and lack of a pass rush plan. Overall, Graham flashes some twitch and power to stack and separate, but his impact is sporadic and non-threatening to offenses. He projects as a subpackage lineman who has development potential.

Expand
  Quote

296. Brennan Eagles, WR, Texas (6-foot-4, 225 pounds)
Eagles has the natural size and tracking skills to post up defenders downfield. However, he lacks the short-area quickness and route-running prowess to instinctively leverage defenders and uncover. Overall, Eagles is an intriguing height/weight/speed talent, but he needs to mature on and off the field to warrant a roster spot in the NFL. He projects as a practice squad candidate.

If the 49ers take Mac Jones at #3, their franchise is in worse shape than imaginable. Jones had Waddle, Smith, and Harris, plus a great o-line. Dude will be a bust. Bank on it. I hope for their sake they come to the realization that this would be a fucking dumbass take. But GM's gonna GM

Word is Shanahan wants Mac not the GM.  I wouldn’t say he will or won’t be a bust but I will say that if you look at the QBs taken over the last decade and read about them before they were taken it really shows that nobody knows which of them will be good or suck.  Many 1st round QB’s end up terrible and other QB’s taken after the first round are now the stars of today.  You should check out the pre draft scouting reports on Mahomes.  Many teams felt he was a 3rd rounder or worse.  The other thing to look at is the organization the QB gets drafted by and the offense he is put in.  I think Mac could do well on the 49ers with their offensive weapons and Shanahan calling the plays where if he was drafted by say the Lions he would probably suck and be out of the league in a few years.

Namath was the generation before's Eli. Pretty darn good, not elite but wove his way so that you can't tell the story of football without him. The whole dynamics of superbowl 3 is kinda crazy. That Colts team is probably considered to be among the 4-5 best of all time if they just won that game. They were just clobbering people all season. Namath came in and guaranteed a victory, in a time where the AFL was seen as a joke. I don't think the impact of that game alone can be underscored.

Sure, but even in that game Namath did not do much.  NY's defense and running game won the game.

Namath was dog shit, and if it wasn't for his guarantee then he wouldn't even be considered above average, let alone hall of fame.

That Namath/Jets victory over the Colts is still considered the biggest upset in Superbowl history...

As a Niners fan, the thought of surrendering two extra firsts and a 3rd rounder for Mac Jones is absolutely disgusting. He is not a clear upgrade over Garoppolo and his upside is Kirk Cousins. Just an indefensible move by Shanahan and Lynch.

that's a joke, right?  Fields at pick 32?

if he's on the board at pick 10, somebody will try to trade with the Cowboys to move up to get him because he ain't getting past New England at pick 11.

This is why patient or at least not desperate teams clean up in the draft. Wilson should be mid first, Fields probably late first based on superior talent/inferior competition, couple poor games, poor faring of recent OSU QBs. Lance maybe late first based on potential, Mac Jones as a second rounder maybe due to uber talented teammates (he has two first round WRs and a borderline first RB just in this draft!). All 5 of these guys could go in the top 12, with teams devastating their future draft capital in the process.

Every couple years we get presented the best TE since Kellen Winslow I or whoever. Wasnt Eric Ebron supposed to reinvent the game after his measureables could not be computed by ESPN’s sport science thing?

Meanwhile we have Gronk who was taken in the second round and is arguably the greatest tight end ever.

There have only been 2 TEs taken in the top 10 in the last 15 years. Both were by the Lions and both were thought to be questionable takes at that spot. Pitts is universally considered a top 5 talent. It doesn’t mean he’ll work out, but TEs as highly graded as Pitts don’t come around every two years.

He only fell to the second round because he had multiple back issues in college. He would’ve been a no doubt first rounder without the injury history.

I can’t think of many TEs in the first round selections besides Pettigrew

Disagree. Get Wilson didn't play the best competition but his release is just picturesque. I've seen very few QBs that look as natural just throwing a football as him.

Yeah, 1st round TEs haven't exactly hit recently:

2020: none

2019: Hockenson (8), Fant (20)

2018: Hurst (25)

2017: OJ Howard (19), Evan Engram (23), David Njoku (29)

2016: none

2014: Ebron (10)

2013: Eifert (21)

2012: none

2011: none

None of those guys were really talked about as quite as breathlessly as Pitts is, last guy like that was probably Vernon Davis picked 6th in 2006. He had a nice career but it took him a while to really make much of an impact and he didn't really live up to his pre draft hype. Certainly didn't revolutionize the position or anything.

It would be awesome if Pitts had a career like Tony Gonzalez or Antonio Gates. He’s not the same type of TE and I get it. I wonder if there will be teams in a year or two that will regret not making the move for him vs this years crop of QBs.
