Jim Acosta: The President is clueless what this has done to the country, but he's keenly worried about what this has done to his brand.

Well, let 'em try.  Good news is at least the truly psychotic idiots in this country are kind enough to identify themselves.  Let 'em chew on a bar of prison soap or a bullet.  Their choice.

Only man to be Impeached twice as President -AND- bankrupt the same casino twice.

Either tell me the odds of something like that or admit we're living in a simulation.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a type of cognitive bias in which people believe that they are smarter and more capable than they really are. Essentially, low ability people do not possess the skills needed to recognize their own incompetence.

So McConnell said he won't convene the Senate until after the inauguration, but I read somewhere they added a provision a couple years ago for either of the party leaders to call for an emergency session. This would qualify, no?

the articles still need to be transmitted to the Senate by the House. So they could call the session but wouldn't have the necessary procedural (and constitutional) checklists

Both leaders have to agree

McConnell said no

If the Senate convened between now and the 19th, Republicans would decide the rules of the trial (they have a 51-48 majority right now).  We need to wait for Ossoff/Warnock/Padilla and VP Harris to be sworn in so Democrats determine the trial rules.

I'm just worried about his scorched earth exit with a self-pardon twist.

Probably a good idea, otherwise the republicans would get pissed off all over again and acquit his ass.

Reconvening the Senate just to receive articles of Impeachment would not qualify for emergency session.  They aren't due back until 19 January.  Obviously no business on the day of Inauguration.  And Mitch remains Majority Leader until the 22nd when the two Georgia senators are seated.  He can easily delay anything happening with the articles or receiving House Managers into his chamber on the 19th and the 21st.  At that point, there's no sense in hearing the removal from office evidence.  Trump is already gone.  Mitch's long game is to wait until the 22nd or later, at which point only a simple majority is needed 51-49 (with 1 GOP defector) or 50-50 with Kamala Harris breaking the tie, to prohibit under the 14th amendment Trump from ever holding federal office ever again, ever.  Mitch gets to wash his party's hands of Trump in perpetuity without directly having a hand in it.  And I have very little doubt Mitch and the GOP take back the Senate in 2022.  This is absolutely brilliant by Mitch, he gets to go out as Majority Leader pretending to Trump's base that he's trying to help save Donald's legacy.  And he starts off the 2021 Senate on good working terms with his new Democrat majority.

best part is that a self pardon is an implicit admission of guilt which opens the floodgates for civil suits - trump's legal counsel told him "think OJ"

The 10 Republicans:

Liz Cheney - #3 in the House - R+25

Jamie Herrera Beutler - R+4

John Katko - D+3

Adam Kinzinger - R+8

Fred Upton - R+4

Dan Newhouse - R+13

Peter Meijer - R+6

Gonzalez - R+8

David Valadao - D+5

Tom Rice - R+9

Interesting mix - some pretty safe, some in close seats that could go either way, and a couple in Biden districts.

yeah, those 4 Republicans are still gonna be targeted by Trumpers and they don't even get the dignity of casting the patriotic vote they should have.

Imagine telling your kids you're going into prospective federal custody because your dad didn't vote against Trump.  In fact, he just didn't vote.  He was busy.

I read a thing about how the Senate conviction is only 2/3rds of those who show up to vote so we could get a conviction in the Senate if some Republican senators decide not to show up.

Can someone smarter than me research and elucidate this?

I saw that mentioned too -- probably somewhere in Cloak Room, but it was attributed to a journalist/talking head.

I believe that is true.  So if we can get 15 Republicans to protest and not show up, maybe.

BRB going to write letters that say "If you show up to vote you're gay" and send them to Senate Republicans.

Fingers crossed!

My understanding was you still needed 2/3 to prevent future office if he's not convicted.
If already convicted then simple majority.

Anthony voted to impeach? I missed that. That’s good to hear. I don’t know his politics but I was concerned that he joined the GOP. I know he’s been active in trying to get legislation passed to compensate college athletes.

This was a highlight of his Buckeye career:
