Do we have a theory as to WHY he was against science and pretending covid wasn't real to begin with?  Is it just that he's a conspiracy theory nut like his cult?

It’s in multiple parts:

1. As I’ve mentioned before, he is of that uber-corporate capitalist mentality that is only able to look at things in the short term. Long term thinking? That’s for pansy pinko liberal socialist communist Democrats. Real Americans only think about today...tomorrow...and the fiscal quarter. Not even really the fiscal year. That’s for fags. Could be corporate fags, but fags nonetheless. Anyways, the thought of various shutdowns made guys like this so squeamish, so Trump resorted to his greatest asset: the ability to, with a straight face, look at a clearly existing problem dead in the eye and say “you are fake news.”

2. He’s also aware of one thing: he attracts the conspiracy nuts like cat nip attracts little Fluffy. The more he pushed his horseshit, the more they loved it. And how did they know they could love it? Well it’s easy. See, he brought in that panel of scientists (Birx, Fauci, et al) several months ago so that they could be the face of the scientific community. If they said anything that was at odds with what Trump was saying, that would just stoke the already existing flames in the burning desire in their urine to hate science for the mere sake of it. It’s an attraction of the most unsavory people that we have, many of whom overlap: the super religious, the conspiracy nuts (flat earthers among others), the severely undereducated, the obviously uneducated, etc.

This is his base. I mean seriously, this man pushed the idea of injecting bleach on national television in the presence of Dr. Birx, the media, members of his cabinet, et al. It was one of the most cringeworthy moments in the history of that room; far surpassing Alexander Haig’s “I’m in charge, here.” Drinking bleach is a colloquial phrase that’s associated with very stupid people. You hear someone say something very stupid, and you reply “did you drink bleach as a child?” This asshole literally tried to advance direct injection of same as a means to fight Covid? In a sane country, the electoral count would have been 538-0. Here? Election Night went 4 extra days and this maniac only fell 38 EC votes short of fucking re-election.

TL;DR version: his perverse conception of what an “economy” actually is and a totally cynical view of his voting base in an election year.

He saw that 34% approval rating.

By summer of next year, polling is going to show that about 3% of the country voted for Trump and 97% voted for Biden or Gary Johnson.

Trump suppressed GOP turnout in GA with his lies about the election. I hope Mitch sees this as an opportunity to prevent Trump from running again.

I'd really like to take a shit in Rudy Giuliani's mouth. I've been eating quite a lot of meat and handfuls of fiber pills, and with a cup of bulletproof coffee I'm pretty sure I could crap enough volume to fill up his throat and make him suffocate.

Too much?

I've been on a 3 day fast food bender. Give me a bottle of that colonoscopy prep stuff and I'd drown him and half of Trumplandia.

the useful idiot fulfilled his purpose. now mitch can cut him loose. he needed him for the judges and justices. now that trump is used up, he can be callously discarded.

mitch was always going to knife him in the back. trump handed him the knife with the insurrection, but mitch was always going to discard him.

That stuff is no joke.  After knee recent surgery, things had not quite started moving to my satisfaction, so I started with the  stool softeners for a couple of days with no results.  I downed a bottle of that stuff in frustration and 30 minutes later I was on the toilet with  cases of the screaming shits and anal tantrum for the next two hours.  I'm pretty sure I had stuff coming out of me that had been there since the Reagan administration.  What were we talking about?

I'll believe it when I see it.  His job is still to hold the Rs together.  They will split the party if he gets enough to convict.

Party's already split, bro.  The only way to bring it back together is a Great Forgetting.  The Republicans are going to jettison Trump and pretend that the past four years never happened.

They will attempt this but I’m skeptical of how it will work out. Too many douchebags like Hawley and Cruz out there that will parlay on Trumpism (fascism).

I see a wager.....will be hard to quantify which way they go, but I suspect we can find a way.

You know my position -- it's Trump's party now, the old GOP members just live in it.  Trump is their king or kingmaker through at least 2024.

Yup. A bunch of assholes who want to be President have seen that Trumpism is the only way and they're all going to try to figure out how to pick up Trump's voters. It's going to keep whatever is left of the establishment wing of the party from being able to move on to pretending he never existed.

Hawley already saying he won’t back a fast appointment for Biden’s DHS pick. Guess he decided he can’t turn back now even if he wanted to, so he’s going full bore Trump.

That’s my hope.  For sure the 2024 GOP primary will be a diarrhea of evil, and watching Hawley, Cruz, Don Jr., and maybe even the king fuckstain himself go after each other will be as entertaining as it is terrifying.  But I think enough people have been scarred by the last 4 years that the motivation to avoid another Trumpist president will be enough to avoid disaster.  It is impossible for me to envision a GOP unified enough to beat any moderate Democrat in a presidential race for at least 12 years.

The problem is the opposition party is going to remain largely divorced from reality in the interest of short term political expediency, and it will work with limited success.  FFS we already have Qanon people in Congress.  The government cannot function when one party has gone full lizard people until they are electorally annihilated.

One lasting memory from my youth was an SNl bit on " whose going to lose to Bush (HW)!!??" Whole cast of Democratic party rejects battling it out.

Mitch is the same bitch he’s always been. I’ll bet a pizza that no republicans voted to convict. Maybe Mitt, so let’s say 2 or fewer at most. We’ll hear some “he messed up but he’s gone so unity pleaz no convict dear trump.” There is 0.0 chance trump is convicted in the senate.

Mitch's plan is for there to be no vote to remove from office.  So he gets his second vote without any baggage.

Democrats now have the spotlight to decide if they want to proceed with the first vote on removal.  By having it, they can lose it and still hamstring the GOP with Trump looming around 2024 which fucks any legitimate candidate.  But not having it, they hand Mitch a clean slate and possible allow him to start moving the board around for 2022/2024.

Mitch's poker hand has been clear for two weeks for those willing to see it without partisan blinders.

i was just thinking about this.  after mitch's statement today, people are speculating about him leaning towards conviction, which mitch can have if he wants.  but why?  since he's out of office already, that vote is pretty meaningless.

as for trump being able to run again, that's a straight majority, right?  romney can do that shit on his own if he wants, regardless of what mitch is thinking.

personally, i want trump to be able to run again, because it'll further splinter the party, and no way they can pull it together by 2024.  but most seem to want him barred from ever running as some sort of punitive action.

is it possible to not have that vote?  or to have one vote and not the other?  if they're not going to convict, then there's no reason to even have that vote.

No.  Conviction is a prerequisite to the bar on holding future public office under the Impeachment Clause.

It may be possible to bar Trump from holding future federal office under the Fourteenth Amendment.  But that's entirely separate from impeachment.

DC Circuit indicated that if the person in question has not been voted to be removed from office, a 14th amendment "second" vote (which really would be second, I acknowledge) would bar him from federal office in perpetuity.  If he's already gone from office, there can be a "skip ahead" to the 14th/barring question.  It'll obviously go up for appeal within weeks of its taking place.  But I think McConnell is banking on the fact that it does.  They can't properly position a proper candidate in 2023, let alone run mid-terms properly, with Commander dipshit looming over everything.  Unless of course, he dies in which case?............

Yeah they need to have a vote to convict next week latest.  Fuck all this playing around.  Everybody already knows what the deal is and what Trump did/said.  You either  think that’s worth convicting or not.  Weeks of speeches won’t make any difference whatsoever in the outcome, it will only serve to give Trump airtime and stall Biden’s agenda.

Schumer should just say this bolded part on the Senate Floor and ask to take a vote.

The Senate has never convicted a President but if there was ever a time.

Maybe I’m naive, but Trump being allowed to influence/control the GOP and suck funding to him from them, is not a good thing. If he can’t run again, 80% of his schtick is gone. If he is not on a ballot, his influence over local GOP candidates is lessened.

Look, Trump will fuck up the GOP for some time, no matter what. But you can limit the damage, and that can be done most effectively by denying him a 2024 run.

Most senators can't look past their next election.  Any Rep who votes to convict trump and is up for reelection in 2022, will likely get primaried.  All they care about is the next election.  Period.  Trump will not get convicted.  Guaranteed.

I don't know, maybe I don't get it, but it sure seems to me that the GOP needs him gone a lot more than the Dems. If they aren't on board with convicting by a good amount of votes, then let them deal with him for the next four years. The GOP has an infestation and they want to cover their eyes and ears while someone else cleans their house. Fuck that

The way I see it, the only option they have is to purge Donald now and hope the country that can't focus on anything longer than a tweet forgets what they did by 2022 and more importantly 2024. It's not a great option, but Donald is already calling allies and seeing who's still loyal.
