Burton: Real Meetings Begin

IIT Staff.   Feb 11, 2021

We can point to yesterday and say that’s when it really began. Because yesterday, with Steve Sarkisian at the helm, the Texas football coaches, team and support staff were finally able to meet together in person for the very first time.

Not on Zoom. In person.

TARS to the rescue... Thx @Machinator

- As the Texas staff has gotten to work in recruiting in 2022 and 2023, prospects and coaches are starting to formulate their opinions of the new direction of the Texas program under Steve Sarkisian. A name I've heard a good amount about is safeties coach Blake Gideon. As I reported earlier this week, Gideon is hot in pursuit of the state's top two safeties Bryan Allen Jr. and Bryce Anderson. There's an energetic aura about Gideon that is impressing these guys as he's worked close with newly-hired cornerbacks coach and pass game coordinator Terry Joseph. These two have started their working relationship off on the right path and have conjoined to recruit some of the biggest secondary names in the state for the 2022 class.

- Since coming onto campus, defensive line coach Bo Davis has been busy handing out offers in 2022 and 2023. In talking to a head coach of a recently offered recruit, Davis has done a good job in relating with his player and is already working towards improving his weaknesses. "You can tell (Davis) really cares about his well-being and wants him to succeed no matter where he goes." In a room with a lot of top talent, Davis seems to be the relationship-building type, so expect the d-line group to be one of the closest knit on the team and one of the most competitive.

- When the entirety of the new staff was announced, arguably the most exciting hire with the Texas fanbase was offensive line coach Kyle Flood. Since arriving, he has gone to work in the 2022 class after inheriting a lackluster 2021 group. In talking to multiple recruits, Flood is "all business" and has done a good job conveying what the Texas offense is going to look like. I asked if the all business approach was off-putting in any way to one recruit and that was met with a firm "not at all." While there is still work to be done, Flood has put Texas back in the conversation with multiple top-tier offensive linemen in the 2022 class.

WHAT I KNOW ON NCAA DEAD PERIOD EXTENSION

Reports surfaced earlier today that the Division I Football Oversight Committee recommended to the NCAA to extend the recruiting dead period through May 31. The Division I Council will decide on the recommendation at a Feb. 17 meeting.

I talked to a recruit today who had an SEC head coach tell him that he expects the dead period to be extended to May 31, and that it is of the understanding that it will not be extended beyond that.

The Division I Council enacted the emergency recruiting dead period back on March 13, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has since extended the end date four times. It currently is set to expire on April 15 pending the Feb. 17 Division I Council meeting.

I can literally run just like that dude, you baby giraffe. My littlest boy enjoys acting like he's Sonic and he runs like that and always makes me do it with him. Plus, been doing the US3 with the others while you're holed up in the north Heights, oiling up your choad and burping out potato chip and PBR breath by noon each day.
We can think of the Surly Sprint-off on September 4th, 2021, as a bit of a medley of racing and track competitions, I guess. Beyond the 100 yard flat out furious sprint-off, I'd do a 40 yard Sonic Sprint against you fuckers. We could also mix in some midget tossing, an office chair hammer-esque throw, and a broad jump in which we stack dead Shaggy servers on top of one another until only one person can successfully clear them for the title. Stuff like that, I think.
You guys can fuck around and find out. I'm already working on a sponsorship deal for the festivities.
Who is BBQing for this?

In a perfect world, Sark would have done everything he could to keep BC. (He may have; who knows?) Dress it up any way you want, Carrington's going to SC  to recruit. We're going to miss him a hell of a lot. You can point to all the rainmaking coaches we hired, but why not couple them with a proven off-the-field guy like BC? Hate to lose him.
As long as Helton is still running the ship it wont make much diff in our recruiting efforts, SC will pull in a few top west coast kids no matter how badly they suck. But as someone already mentioned, might have a few more portalers headed west.

not saying it doesn't happen, it's just that it's pretty rare to be successful for those who haven't played college ball like Seth and Rashaad have. I know Mike Leach did it but I'm not sure that many others have.
Forget position coaches, there are numerous head coaches past and present who never played other than Leach. Off the top of my head, Sonny Dykes, George O'leary, Coach Fran..and I know at least one long time Texas HS coach (hall of famer but name escapes me) that didnt play football at any level.

Of course that doesnt mean Carrington is going to rise to the top of the profession, but if he puts in the same time and effort he does recruiting, it will work fine. Think he played in HS, some on the never played list didnt even do that

Burton:  I spent the last couple of days thinking about OU and comparing their starting lineup to that of Texas.  My question boiled down to this:  How many players on the Texas offense would start at OU?

Truth is, beyond Bijan Robinson, there is no single Longhorn that would be a sure-fire starter for the Sooners.

Yet Texas stacks up fairly well across the board.

So Burton says on paper blOU has a better 2021 Roster than TEXAS -- wonder if that will be mentioned much next Oct prior to the game at the Cotton Bowl by 9.95er's ??

That's an interesting consideration. I wouldn't necessarily think differently right now. But the vast majority of positions are close enough they could flip after next year. Even if Bijan is the only Horn you'd choose, you'd have him as the #1 player overall in many cases with really Rattler being the only option.

I would take our players on defense any day over ou’s.  ou’s defense is shittastic.  No dL, no lbs, shitty secondary.

Their offense definitely has higher rated players but it’s not like we are Baylor.  This Texas offense has plenty of highly rated recruits on paper.  Let’s see if Sark can get them to produce.  There might be 5-6 teams that have out recruited us on offense the last 4 years.

Lol someone has no clue what they’re talking about. OU’s defense was better than ours by a good bit last year. Losing Perkins will hurt for them but they have some good talent in the pipeline on defense now. The days of them being a tire fire on defense are gone.
