2021 Poker: Raising Covid with the nuts!

My all time worst memory of Vegas is getting bad beated out of the big 50 on day three, and having to literally wait in a line for an hour just to verify what places I finished.  It was another 45 minute wait at 7 am the next morning to actually get paid. It’s just ridiculous how slowly they operate.

Yeah I once played one of their dailys and it was at the time the biggest field ever for one. The way it was structured, when the bubble burst the damn just broke and players were falling by the second. By the time I went out there were a solid 100 in front of me trying to cash. Total nightmare. Multiple hours at like 2am

Interesting opportunity to make a low risk mistake last night I thought I’d share

$2/5. Solid player LJ opens to $25 with $2k behind. LAG CO calls with $950 behind. I call on BTN w 8h8d and $1400 behind. Blinds fold. $75 pot

8s3c2c. LJ tanks an uncomfortably long time for first to act. Eventually checks. CO leads $95.

Such unusual play. The LJ tank was notable. I’m not sure he does this with complete air or a strong pair. Feels like he maybe connected at least a bit. If I were in his position, I could definitely have 33, 22, A4s and A5s, as well as suited connected and 1 gap clubs.

WTF is CO doing with this flop overbet? He could def have straight and flush draws. Also mid pairs up to JJ perhaps. He may have just misread the LJ tank as weakness and thought he’d steal.

I must admit I was confused here. My typical play would have me take over on a wet board where I’m ahead so that others pay to chase. The odd play though (and the desire not to tank and show too much strength) led me to just call.

Back to LJ who quickly raises to $300. My guess is he thinks CO is full of shit and this is an easy squeeze.

CO jams.

Here is where I make a mistake, perhaps. I go ahead and jam over top.

LJ looks sick. He gets counts from both of us, likely calculating odds. After a good bit, he gives it a slow fold.

Runout is safe and I mistakenly show first. Don’t get to see what CO has either, but both later claim to have big over pairs.

Should I have raised to the $95? Should I have just called the CO jam and entice LJ to stay in?

I think if anything, flatting 950 with 450 behind looks stronger and less likely to be a draw than just jamming the 1400 effective. What, are you flatting A5cc for 950 and then folding the 450 on the turn? If stacks were deeper behind the 950, like if you also had 2k, I think flatting is much more viable.

I would generally call the $95, but also am not generally playing this deep, so would be open to the idea of raising. It definitely looks very strong to raise a larger than pot-size bet with the PFT still yet to act, which is why I would be inclined to call. Knowing that CO is willing to get $1000 in on the flop into a $75 pot with one pair def makes me appreciate the value of raising, b/c it sucks if he's willing to just dump 200 blinds with QQ here, but won't if a club or A or K comes on turn.

I’ve sacked up and started going max buyin of $800 rather than my previous $500 at $2/5 and I’m curious if that might be contributing to my sick run (now up $11k in 14 days!) The splashy players don’t seem to be scared (good) but the pros aren’t as aggro vs me

Downside is my max nightly loss (3x is my personal rule) is $2400 vs $1500 so when it happens it will be that much more painful. I was down $1400 a few nights back and turned it around for just a $200 loss, so I do like that it gives me more room to recover

Finally got off the tourney min cash roll tonight.

Played in the 7pm $1500 guaranteed PLO free roll at shuffle 512 tonight. May have been the weakest tournament field I have played in since playing in bar tournaments during the poker boom of the oughts.

$10 dealer fee and $20 seat fee to play. Started with 13k in chips, you could get another $10k for $20 at any time and buy up to 5 of those at the first break. I couldn't get shit going during the first hour, busted, paid $40 for 20k in chips, hit the break with around 25k in chips, chip leader at table had $100k in chips so I bought up $40 more and had 45k chips at the break. Finally started to win a few hands and got up over $100k. Hit a strait flush and got paid off, other guy had a set, would have stacked him if he had had nut flush. Flopped quad aces on another hand but didn't make shit.

Only around 20 players, top 3 got paid, 72 entries so a $160 overlay. Got down to 3 at 11pm and I offered an ICM chop and ended up second with $500 so a $390 win.

A few hours in last night I find myself at $1400 (+$600) but card dead for a half dozen orbits with a maniac ATM to my immediate right paying everyone else and I’m starting to get a bit tilted by it.

Finally, he opens UTG+1 to $35. I call with TT. CO makes it $150. SB jams and we all have to fold. Fuck.

Next hand, he opens UTG to $20. I raise to $85 w JJ. Old man wakes up in LJ and raises to $250. We all fold. Double fuck. I’m steaming.

Next hand I get ATo UTG. No way I’m falling for that! Fold. Fuck it all.

Next hand, LJ opens to $80. Maniac calls SB. I look down and take a long look at AA. Got damn. I make it $225. LJ ($900 more behind) doesn’t take long to jam. Board runs out clean for an easy $1k profit. (He shows KK)

I easily could have punted the three prior hands, but instead swallowed my pride and got paid handsomely for it.

+$1700 on the night. +$12k in Oct. Crazy run continues

Interesting hand last night that I wasn’t involved with, but generated a bit of discussion at the table.

UTG straddle. Hero opens BTN to $35. Same maniac from above calls in BB. UTG folds.. $80 pot.

Qh 8s 7s. BB ($450 behind) checks. BTN ($900) bets $85. BB check raises to $200. BTN tanks. Obviously frustrated. Clearly looking and seeing BB just has $250 left. Says aloud that BB could have Q8, 78, maybe 88, 77 (though most of us believed maniac would have raised these pre). Tries to get BB to talk, asks if he has AQ. Asks if BB will show if he folds. BB agrees and after a bit BTN folds.

True to his word, BB shows Qc8c. BTN shows KsKh, racks up and leaves.

First, there’s no chance in hell I’m ever folding KK here.

Second, his initial read was dead on. I would have jumped straight to assuming BB had draws, maybe with a Q, but BTN read two pair as most likely.

Third, I think BTN mistakenly went straight to choosing between folding and jamming. I don’t think he considered calling. For just $115 more he could have seen a turn and possibly a river. He kind of screwed himself by talking aloud, making that option less likely to earn a free river card, though.

Lex O ($800) sits down and first orbit opens $20 in LJ. I make it $60 in CO w QQ. BTN gives speech and then just calls. Lex bumps it to $200. I call, leaving $400 behind. BTN again gives speech and calls w $300 behind. $600 pot.

Ts8s4h.

Lex checks quickly. I’m thinking of he has AA or KK he’d have to lead out on this flop. I jam. BTN folds (claims JJ) and Lex snaps w AA. So, yeah. Guess I’m a contributor now.

Fuck.

Back at the lodge for the Monday big o

down to 14 players, 217k average stack, I have 500k

funniest hand so far, I had TT3xx in the big blind, several limpers.
flop T33, checks around
turn is a 3. I bet out 20k and two women at the table call.
river 9, I pot and instacall from first, second woman looks at me with a “how dare you” look (she’s a fucking cunt and everyone hates her), plays with her chips and finally folds, other woman shows KK. Scoopity doop.

Big o and congress are both 5 card PLO hi/lo 8 or better, just depends on what part of the country you're in to what it's called.

The casino at National Harbor in DC ran 5 card plo high. Orleans in Vegas has a bunch of different omaha limit games including 5 card hi/lo, not sure if they run 5 card high limit.

My first live stream game last night.  1-3-6 and most of the time 12.  It went well.  Check out the 2h:55 mark for the most fun 😎

We were playing 7-2 for a quarter.

Nice.  You know Wes?  I've contemplated playing in that game as well.

Yeah.  We’ve played in a home game together for a few years.  He stopped playing with us when TCH opened and he started doing his vlogs.  Good guy.

Was going to play again tonight but something must be going on at Prime.  He didn’t send out an invite and I noticed on their website that they haven’t streamed in 5 days.

I played with him for a while in a home game probably before the home game you played with him.  It's such a small world sometimes.

Supposedly one of the guys in the Hustler cash game last night just left his chips and went to the Lakers game. And then he got kicked out of the Lakers game. And he might be back in the cash game tonight . . .

Early in the Los Angeles Lakers' loss to the Phoenix Suns, Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard got into a tussle on the bench that briefly turned physical. Somehow, that was not the strangest incident of the game. A fan getting ejected for slapping Rajon Rondo's hand away from his face took the prize.

Toward the end of the third quarter, there was a delay in the game as attendants cleaned up a spill next to the court. As everyone waited for play to restart, a fan sitting courtside had some words for Rondo. It's not clear exactly what he said, but in this video you can see the fan in the hat saying something in his direction. Rondo immediately points at him, and when play stops again a few seconds later, he points again and looks toward the referee.

A short time later the fan was ejected, though it wasn't initially clear why because the camera had cut away. On the replay from a different angle, you can see why. Rondo continued to point at the fan and eventually started making a finger gun gesture in his face. The fan responded by slapping Rondo's hand away, and security rushed onto the floor to usher the fan away.

Played in the shuffle 512 Sunday night plo tournament again tonight. $30 to get in, $1500 garunteed, 14 people played but a ton of rebuys, but no where near $1500 collected so a big overlay agian.

Played 3 hours and raised pre flop once. Had AsQsAcTc. Get repotted pre flop, I go all in and there's 4 of us. Other guys are QQxx KKxx and 7432. Flop T72 with two spades and I'm in the lead. Turn 7 river 2 and mr 7432 scoops. I rebuy. Mr 7432 now has over half the chips in play, and announces he's folding into the final table and will only play the nuts. Next hand he pots preflop, says he has the nuts. Ends up winning the hand with AK95, and is completely serious saying that its a really good starting hand. Guy ends up playing every single hand until the final table and has around 400k in chips at the final table. Two people at the final table with around 100k and the rest of us below 50k.

I don't get a hand worth a shit the entirety of the final table, end up going out in 6th when my big blind A5 runs into 55 on a A52 flop. Ooops. If you are in the Austin area and have ever played more than 2 hands of plo in your life you'll probably do pretty well in this tournament.

UTG (Russian Pro, 30ish) opens $20. He took me for $900 earlier in the night when I turned top two which also gave him a straight. I also gifted him $300 last night when I hit a Q high flop w AQ and he flipped a set. He owes me. HJ calls. I call BTN w 8d7c. SB folds. BB raises to $80. UTG calls. HJ folds. I call. $260 pot.

9s6h4s. BB checks. UTG opens $115. I have to call. BB ($1500 behind) raises to $450. UTG ($2200 behind) calls. I have $950 left. I figure if I’m calling here, I’d have to call a bet on the turn, so it’s just a call/fold decision. I jam.

BB looks miserable. He tank folds. UTG calls quickly. $2610 pot.

8h.

3c.

I begrudgingly show my pair of 8s. UTG shows AsKs. SHIP IT!

BB had AA and is livid

Arrived in Vegas today. Went to the Rio about 2 pm before checking in at Bally's. Was hoping lines wouldn't be too bad today so I could register for the Senior tournament on Wednesday. No line at all at the front desk. They gave me a player's card. Checked my vaccine on my Clear app. Sent me down to where you register for tournaments at the back of the convention center. No line at all to register. I go straight to the window. It was very pleasant. I was expecting the worse hearing about the lines. Guess I just picked the right day. There was pretty much nobody in the hallways. Checked out the Brasilia room to see where I would be playing Wednesday and the room was full of players. Didn't check out any of the other rooms.

I've been playing PLO for just over a year now. I'm making more money than NLH but damn, the swings.

He should not have check raised if he wasn’t committed to calling a jam. He fucked with the SPR. He def should have led the flop and it would have played out much differently

Yeah he put himself in a bad spot. But your back-raise looks so darn strong.
