What's the drive like 4-5 hours home?

Roughly 4 hours each way. I’ve made it in 3:45ish or so a few times. The drive up takes a little longer because you have to get molested at the BP checkpoint /noCR.

I know their first real game isnt until 2025, but Is UTRGV planning on scrimmaging other programs in 2024 or will they only have inter-squad scrimmages this year?

Is that even allowed? Seems like I heard a long time ago it isnt.

I think new programs are allowed to have a practice year with games that don’t count. UTSA played a practice season in 2011 against teams like Minot State and Bacone before their first “official” season in 2012

Bush has gotten like 5 of his former NB Canyon players to commit. Which is, uh, certainly a choice. Not exactly the first school I’d raid.

Canyon has one of the top football programs in all of Comal County.

I was sad to see that RGVFC went under, but good for UTRGV and I'm sure they got a good price.

The Toros were never going to make it sadly. Soccer really isn’t that popular down there so attendance suffered, and the soccer fans that are there mostly just follow the big clubs.

Monterrey Tech?  Harlingen Marine Military Academy?  Port Isabel JV?

Seeing them play the MTY Borregos or UANL Tigres would be pretty cool and draw a big crowd.

Fun facts about ONEFA: there’s like 7 or 8 teams called “Borregos Salvajes” because Monterrey Tech uses that mascot for all their campuses in the different cities. Super stupid. But the dominant one is the team at the OG campus in Monterrey.

And today I learned that Arkansas State for some reason has a campus in Querétaro, and they have a football team there also called the Red Wolves.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday that the UTRGV football team will visit Texas State on Sept. 11, 2027, and Sept. 14, 2030.

This marks the first announcement of games in program history, as the football team is set to play its first-ever game on Aug. 30, 2025.

“This is another milestone moment for our program, department, university and community as we take the next step toward starting a Division I football program and begin building our future schedules,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “This is the first of what will be many announcements as we get closer to kickoff, providing our fans exciting updates about future opponents for both home and away competitions. Playing games on the road against an NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference opponent like Texas State gives us an opportunity to gain exposure for UTRGV and the Rio Grande Valley while engaging our central Texas alumni.”

How do they still not have a full schedule for 2025???

They’re opening with Sul Ross, and then of course the 9 Southland conference games. They just need to find 2 more games.

This is going to be a party. Lot of A&I grads in the RGV

2027?   Will A&I (still can’t call them TAMUK) have a D2 program by then?  Enrollment has declined and Collie Station seems to be aiming most of its efforts on its system schools towards Tarleton and the San Antonio campus.  Plus the local leadership down there seems to have put football facility upgrades a low priority item.

Inaugural roster. Good mix of homies/South Texas kids on the team

https://goutrgv.com/sports/football/roster

Look like they are taking a page from the way UTSA rolled out their program.  The Runners  on the San Antonio area for a large chunk of their inaugural roster,   It did the job to draw local  and regional interest.   It didn’t take them too long to attract from other areas of the state and nation for that matter and the roster became less local.

First impressions: There are worse places to grab a spread system QB than Laredo United.

Most of the valley representation is by way of the PSJA North Raiders, which is the last place where Coach Bush's dad (who is now his Director of High School Relations) coached. Kind of surprised there's not one or two Harlingen, Weslaco, San Benito kids since those have been some of the best valley teams over the past 2-3 years.

PSJA North has been the valley’s best team the past  two seasons along with Edinburg Vela.

Yeah, didn't mean instead of the PSJA North kids, more of in addition to.  Just surprised that the other really good teams in the Valley didn't even have one player that could've landed there.

they need to find a greg ward jr type qb, it shouldn't be that hard

next, lot of 3 star lbs / dbs from premier hs programs hope they don't transfer out

size on the OL. HS OL's are losing roster spots in bigger programs to transfer rules. Go find some potential stars that need to bulk up

speed speed speed speed speed

The upside is they are playing in the FCS in the Southland.   They shouldn't try to fast track like UTSA did and move up to FBS or whatever they call it now.   In fact stay there until the SLC dissolves as we know it or FCS changes drastically.  And even then if FCS starts offering less scholarships to encourage some D2 schools to move up , they should stay there.

I'm afraid though as a former Texas A&I student and longtime fan this will be another nail in the programs coffin.   aggy has no interest in helping any other program under it's system  other than Tarleton State right now.   They've decided Tarleton is going to be their UTA or UTSA and roll with it.   They have or are spending huge sums of money on both the academic and athletic side to give them that boost.

FCS has athletes that get drafted each year. Their problem going forward, just like the G5, is the new portal. I think I read where 40%+ of the the G5 players that made “All Conference” honors in 2023, left/portalled to a P5 school. It’s almost like the minor leagues to get experience and get your name out there.

My dad's from Kingsville (he and my brother took a few credits from A&I), and he's been saying for a couple years this might do in A&I. They really don't seem to be on the way up much, and D2 doesn't seem to be sustainable. It's weird seeing teams that used to be mainstays on the Javelina's schedule (and were often under the Javs in the standings) move up to greener pastures. I guess it's all about resources at that level. Kingsville also being a stagnant town probably doesn't help. UTRGV grows, and less Valley kids will want to move to Kingsville. Same with TAMUCC.

Agreed.   I can think of bunch of schools that have moved up that were once regulars on the Javelinas schedule.  Or teams they would see in the playoffs.  One of them is Texas State which was SWT back at my time taking undergrad classes at A&I.  That game was the first game of the season and would sell out both stadiums and then some.   Ironically my daughter will be starting classes at Texas State tomorrow and we moved her in last weekend to the campus dorms.  The staging area was the  football stadium parking lot and the stadium today is a far cry from the stadium it was back when I went up to watch my first A&I/SWT game.   That’s just one school of many that have moved up the greener pastures.   Tarleton is another one where had you told me 10 years ago, they would get a premier slot on ESPN 2 on pre opening week in front of national TV audience, I’d say you were nuts.

The worse thing to happen to that school was to become an aggy system school.   It’s sad some levers can’t be pulled to get them out an into a new system.   Considering UT already has two  system schools in South  Texas and A&M has three  in addition to Kingsville with Corpus, Laredo and San Antonio and the UofH has a Victoria campus, Tech would be a logical choice.

2500 fans attended their first open practice. Also apparently the legendary AJ Gonzaque enrolled and has joined the team as a walk-on Redshirt junior TE. No idea where he’s been the past 3 years.

I have no idea who he is but a quick google shows he played the last two years at JUCO Mesa College.
