Dodged a bullet, I'd say.

Yep. This hire has been fail from the start. The staff he put together was awful.

Easier to tough guy some 18-22 kid making pennies than grown men making double or triple your salary?

Yeah, it’s really surprising the number of high level college coaches who fail in the NFL partially because they can’t grapple with the idea of coaching professional grown men. More evidence that CFB culture is totally fucking weird to say it nicely and toxic to say it impolitely.

Urban's 2-11 record is worse than Petrino's 3-10. Wow, what a miserable failure this was. (The first page or two of this thread is worth going back to read.)

Additionally, the former Jags kicker also said that Meyer didn’t refer to his specialist by their names, but instead by their positions or with an expletive.

“It was ‘Kicker, Punter, Long snapper,’” Lambo said. “Or S–tbag, Dips–t or whatever the hell it was.”

So this is where Tom picked it up from.

Darn. Had my hopes up for Chuck. :)

I gotta say... after two failed Urban coordinators, one failed attempt to hire Urban himself, and flipping a lot of players away from Urban's successor... I'm... really glad we're not going after Urban or his assistants any more. I think that coaching tree is over.

Things he is good at:

1) Recruiting.  This is his #1 skill, and it does not matter in the pro's of course.

2) Hiring good coaches, other than a few boners. Seems he loaded up on boners at Jax.  Perhaps his pool of NFL guys isn't very deep.

3) Early on, his read option offense was money.  That stopped happening in 2017 or so, and he never quite adapted.

#1 has been negated by NIL.  #3 no longer works.  I don't think he'll be good for college anymore.

I’m one of the few here that enjoy’s Zach Smith’s podcast from time to time.  Dude is likely a POS, but I find his take on football interesting.  He had a recent episode all about Urban Meyer.  The key takeaway is that Urban overreacts to everything.  He said that’s his best and worst trait as a head coach and that’s why he will never get respect from an NFL locker room.

Yep I'm aware of all of that. My contention is that none of it aside from the lap dance incident amounts to much, and would probably be going largely unnoticed if the national media didn't have a hard on for the guy. Whatever, not my fight to pick but it's somewhat of a tired routine to me.

The Vegas O/U win total for Jacksonville was 6.5. So, to add another bullet point to @Mitch Cumsteen’s list, 2-15 would have been a pretty significant underachievement by the most objective measurement.  Maybe he beats Houston and goes 3-14, still pretty bad. To show such marginal improvement after a 1-15 year is pretty disastrous, especially in the NFL where coaches’ “prove it” windows are typically shorter.

Urban will be back in college soon.

Scenarios:

1.) FSU when they fire Norvell. But he has to worry about Deon taking that spot too…. Hmmm.

2.) One of the major moves in the last two years flames out (Texas, OU, USC, LSU, Notre Dame, Oregon, or Miami) after not getting immediate results, the major booster(s) take over process, and Urban is hired

3.) More shit comes out and he becomes a little too stinky for the major programs. He lands a second tier gig like Cincy after Fickell leaves or something like that as the coaching dominoes fall at the end of next 2 years.

Didn't take long for him to completely destroy his reputation.  Guess he should've come to Texas.

You would have preferred that he destroyed his reputation here?  WTF is wrong with you?

Not sure. I think a big part of his flameout had to do with the fact that the NFL wasn't as easy as he thought it would be compared to college.

Were they expecting him to come and win in year 1? Good lord.

No, they were expecting him to not be toxic, not be a raging asshole and not skip a team flight to get caught finger banging women that aren’t his wife.
