#10 Texas (15-2) is hitting the road for today and tomorrow.

Today: McNeese State - 10-13

  • Started the season with two wins versus Kansas and two blowout losses to #5 LSU and #25 Duke (combined 17-1 loss)
  • Took 1 out of 3 from Arkansas (and one of the other went to 14 innings) and lost in 9 innings to Baylor
  • Lost to #10 OK State and to #7 Louisiana in 8 innings
  • Swept by #22 Central Florida
  • Lost to #6 Florida in 8 innings
  • Lost to #12 Louisiana by a run
  • Beat UH by a run

McNeese looks pretty experience early on, considering they have played 13 games against ranked teams already, going 1-12 but 3 of those games went to extras and and 5 of them were a loss by 1 or 2 runs

  • Hit .227 with 13 HR in 23 games, 69 walks to 126 strikeouts, 37-50 stolen bases, .963 fielding
  • 1.47 staff ERA, 83/102 runs earned, 72 walks given up, 96 strikeouts issued, given up 26 HR as a staff and 27 extra base hits (non-HR)

Tomorrow: DH versus #14 Louisiana - 13-4

  • Lost twice to #11 LSU, 0-4 and 2-3
  • Split with #8 Ok State 7-1 and 3-5 (9 innings)
  • Lost to Baylor 1-8

Only have played 17 games so far, 4 against ranked teams (Baylor was not ranked at the time they played), going 1-3 versus those ranked teams

  • Hit .310 with 17 HR in 17 games, 48 walks to 60 strikeouts, 45-51 SB, .967 fielding
  • 2.52 ERA, 41/46 runs earned, 29 walks given up to 111 strikeouts issued, 9 HR allowed

Texas going 2-1 on this roadtrip would be fantastic.  With our upcoming pre-conference schedule of New Mexico (x3), Texas State, South Dakota, UTA (x2) and UTSA before we open Big 12 play on April 1 with Tech, we have the chance to head into conference play at 25-3

Weird Big 12 schedule too - 3 home games (Tech), 6 straight road contests (@ ISU / @ OU), 7 straight home games (KU, Ok State and 1 Baylor game) and then finish 2 straight road games (@ Baylor)

Someone on the softball forum calculated the RPI already -

Texas is #11 - SOS is 88.  Average win RPI is 107.2 and our average RPI loss is 4.

Other teams of note we play/have played in the top 100:

  • LSU 4
  • Wichita State 15
  • OU 18 (their SOS is 173, holy cupcake - their avg RPI win is )
  • Ok State 19
  • Louisiana 25
  • Ole Miss 27
  • Baylor 34
  • Texas State 38
  • Iowa State 40
  • McNeese 45
  • Miss St. 47
  • BYU 62
  • Texas Tech 70
  • Kansas 74
  • UConn 90
  • UNT 93
  • Houston 97

The sad thing is we lost some good games for the RPI: we lost 2 games against #2 Alabama, a game against #42 Arizona, a game against #32 South Dakota State and a game against #84 Colorado State.  We could have used 5 more top-100 games.

I never really looked at OU's schedule - holy shit. I know COVID prevented teams from going to Judi Garman or Mary Nutter or the PV Classic but there's no excuse for their OOC schedule, considering Texas also didn't to go to any of those tournaments and still got in games against Louisiana and LSU and had Alabama and Arizona on the schedule.  Their avg RPI win is 127.41, which is one of the worst amongst the top P5 teams.

Their best games are 3 against Houston (RPI 97), a road game at Arizona State (29) and a two home games versus Missouri (22).  They better hope they can get that late season DH against Georgia (20) in, because otherwise that schedule is CRAP and should not be worthy of a top 8 seed.

It feels like we gave up on Chloe Romero far too early back in 2019. She had a rough 2020 at Cal, but her 2021 has been far superior with a new pitching coach.

She's currently 6-0 with a 0.27 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 1 ER, 22K/6BB, 0 HR at Cal.  She played sparingly at Texas as a freshman under Clark (16 innings), did not play in 2019 in Mike's first season and then transferred to Cal.  Bad RS sophomore season, but having a great junior year already.

Obviously she got shafted since Mike came in, brought Elish with her, and already had Shea and Bollinger on roster.  I wish Romero would have stuck it out; she could have been a clear #2 or 3 in 2020 after Bollinger graduated and could have worked her way up to the ace in 2021 after Elish departed.  Because we don't have an ace right now, no offense to Shea or Molly.  They are a great tandem but neither is picking up the ace mantel with Elish hanging it up.

Game 1 vs Louisiana is about to begin, in about 5 minutes!

Shea gets the game 1 start.  Her stat line in 2020's 2-1 win over ULL

6.2 IP, 4 hits, 1 run/1 earned, 3 strikeouts, 0 walks, 7 flyouts, 9 groundouts, 79 pitches

Miranda pitched the final 1/3 of an inning to get the save.
