Hell yea!   Thanks for the updates.

These games mean little in terms of W-L and score. Lots of situational innings, playing more than 7 regardless of score, shuffling of players, Iakopo is sitting out the fall season, etc.

But you learn a lot - like Texas taking advantage of bases loaded, no outs and O’Leary not letting aggy score with the same scenario.

Yeah Hulon had a rough outing, but Horns win 7-4 in 10 innings

Wtf do we know. She struck out 7 in 4 innings of relief today.  1 walk and 1 ER

Czech had a good outing too - 1 ER over 4 innings with 4 K

Exactly how many pitchers do we need on staff?  Good pickup, but that room is getting a little crowded.

She’s transferred once, from UCR to Fresno. So not 100% sure she will be granted a waiver (same with Elish).

Dolcini is better than any of our other transfers (Hulon or Czech). By far. If she gets the waiver as a mid-year enrollee, we may have a WCWS caliber staff.  Allows Simpson more time to acclimate to the game rather than being thrown in.

She’s a one year rental so it shouldn’t hinder development.

I get what you mean by the game not mattering, but if the shoe is on the other foot, we'd all potentially run into an aggie in our life telling us how they rolled us in softball recently. Anything to keep the lid on their nonsense is worthwhile.

***************

Separate question for you guys that follow softball religiously - what is the prognostication for the team this spring? Should they wind up in Oklahoma City? Would that be a stretchy expectation?

I follow this thread and watch them on LHN, but generally speaking just cheer for all UT sports to do well and pay more attention than the average joe, but don't know shit about the non-big 4 sports in terms of program outlook.

Texas has a deep lineup and should be a top 10 team with a real shot at OKC if the pitching staff is as deep and talented as they should be, they can certainly make a run. As usual, OU will be very good, and OkState should be strong as well.

The parts are there and the talent is there.

  • Pitching - O'Leary is solid and Dolcini (if eligible) is the second pitcher that could get us into OKC (as long as we aren't paired with OU or Ok State).  Czech is a solid lefty and Hulon/Simpson can eat some innings to keep O'Leary and Dolcini fresh.
  • Offensive - we lost Rhodes, Ellsworth, Sullivan and MK Tedder.  The first 3 are pretty big losses (28 HR, 118 RBI) but players like Brianna Cantu, Alyssa Washington, Carlee Ratcliff should get more playing time.  We may be less power and more speed with players like Jefferson, Mya Holmes, Mia Scott and Popelka being healthy. Team will go as far offensively as Iakopo, Jefferson, Parker*, Burke and Whitaker take us.

*Parker might be our most consistent hitter - here's her stats against all fall ball so far - a sizzling 16-21 (.762) with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR and 11 RBI in 5 games.

  • Defense was a big issue last year, but I think it will be better this year.

We will be battling with Ok State for 2nd in the Big 12, but we do also get OU at home this year.  Ok State has some question marks - Elish has to get a waiver approved to play and she doesn't have the benefit of a coaching change as her last school to justify one.   They lost a lot of pitching - 267.4 innings (68%) of their 2021 pitching staff is gone.   They will be good offensively (really only lost one major player), but the pitching is a big question mark if Elish is not eligible.

OU will be #1 again, by a lot.   If Dolcini and Elish are both eligible in the spring, Texas and OSU will also be top 10 teams.

Leave it to our defense to allow a run in a no-hitter.

*I have no idea how that runner got on or scored, but I’m going with bad defense so the post works.

3 walks and a ground ball

Might as well try to start and piece out the schedule during fall ball:

February 17-20 - St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational (TBD on opponents and schedule)
March 18-19 - LSU in Austin (1 game on the 18th and a DH on the 19th)

March 16 - @ Louisiana (DH)
April 1 - Louisiana (single game)

I think Texas just needs to throw Simpson into the fire like Texas soccer did with all these FR.

Talent wins and Simpson is the most talented arm on the staff.

We definitely have a top 10 caliber staff with O'Leary, Dolcini, Czech and Simpson. That's probably underselling it too if Simpson develops by the end of the season. This pitching staff is miles ahead of last year.

Everyone signed for '22, including Dolcini.   Mike said "for the 2022 season" so sure sounds like either the waiver is going to go through or has gone through due to the coaching change at Fresno.

#12 overall class in ESI.

  • Reese Atwood (C/1B), Sandia, Texas - #5 overall and #1 catcher in in Extra Inning
  • Leighann Goode (SS/2B), San Antonio, Texas - #17 overall and #3 infielder for ESI and #40 in Softball America
  • Citlaly Gutierrez (RHP), Stamford, Texas - #36 overall and #15 pitcher for ESI
  • Maddie Pomykalski (UTL), Frankfort, Illinois - #75 overall and #14 infielder in ESI
  • Viviana Martinez (SS/2B), Tolleson, Arizona - #3 overall and #1 infielder in ESI and #7 overall in Softball America

So two top 5 players (Martinez and Atwood), another top 20 player (Goode) and two more top 75 players (Gutierrez and Pomykalski) to go along with one of the top pitching transfers in the offseason (Dolcini).

The 2021 class was #7 ESI class (#4 Simpson, #7 Scott and Maloney, #12 Cimusz, #24 Holmes).  Flo Softball had 3 of them in the top 40 and Softball America had 4 of them in the top 60.

Mike White stacking 'croots.

Played co-rec city league with Atwood's mom.  It was a blast watching her "bobble" the ball in the outfield and then gun guys down trying to advance.  If she's anything like her mom, she is super competitive and can't stand not playing well

The only reason White's recruiting classes haven't been ranked higher is because he's been taking smaller classes but he's stacking insane talent.

'21 class signed 6-

Cimusz (#12 recruit Extra Inning)

Holmes (#24 recruit Extra Inning)

Maloney (T-#7 recruit Extra Inning)

Quiroga (#142 recruit Extra Inning)

Scott (T-#7 recruit Extra Inning)

Simpson (#4 recruit Extra Inning)

'22 class signed 5-

Atwood (#5 recruit Extra Inning)

Goode (#17 recruit Extra Inning)

Guitierrez (#36 recruit Extra Inning)

Pomykalski (#75 recruit Extra Inning)

Martinez (#3 recruit Extra Inning)

White is going to land several top 25 recruits in the '23 class too. This is an insane run.

One of the top 2023 pitchers

This is a huge get...as in probably the biggest of MW's tenure.  She chose Texas over LSU, Washington, UCLA and Bama.  She's already in the Team USA talent pool, having been invited to tryout last summer for the U-19 team traveling to South America next week.  She didn't make the team, but she was also the youngest participant by about 2 years.  Teagan is special.

She was a top 10 recruit at one point but not sure where she's ranked now.

Regardless, Mike White can really recruit.

She's not the #1 pitcher in the 2023 class, but she's also a hitting pitcher, which is harder to rank.

She's special, either way.  Simpson, Gutierrez and Kavan in back to back to back classes is how you win championships.

Baylor and Arizona transfers - both OF

Gilbert started all last season at Baylor. Former #23 recruit

Dayton was a backup OF at Arizona. Former #15 recruit

Can you give us an early starting lineup ?

Good move to add these OF's.   I count 21 on the roster with only 2 freshmen (Quiroga and Holmes) listed as OF's.   Utility players like Burke and Popelka have played OF and also other position players.

I am going to miss Kaitlyn Washington.    Fan of her approach at the plate.   Had some defensive miscues at the end of the season,  but an overall solid player.

Can’t even hazard a guess. So many new players and Mike plays everyone early. Depends how some players rehabbed from injury too
