I doubt many here watched it for the same reasons I almost didn't.

But sack up and watch it when you can. We have officially crossed the Rubicon into Oceania.

Let me guess he said unity, but what he really means is obedience. He talked about coming together, but what he really means is my side will become radical to the left, and you have to compromise, or else.

we hung an American flag on our house at 11am this morning. because AMERICA.

I guess I'm the contrarian asshole today but I disagree with this sentiment. This basically says that Donald Trump was the United States of America for 4 years and that Biden is now.

That's not the case at all. If you're a flag flier then it should have been up before and after the inauguration. Supporting the United States shouldn't be based on who POTUS is. That's how we got where we are.

But I'm admittedly being a bit judgmental considering I've never flown one.

Well, that and the fact that the American flag was used as an ostentatious, aggressive, and violent symbol of an angry terrorist movement affiliated with the insane POTUS kinda stained it for a lot of us.

Seriously, for the last four years, my reaction upon seeing someone ostentatiously flying an American flag was "well, there goes an asshole."  It was visceral, and that response was ingrained by repetition.  I don't mean seeing it flying at a car dealer, or from a simple front porch flag mount -- I'm talking the guys who flew 5 of them, or had them flying from their truck.  And that pissed me off.  That's my country's flag.  And we should take back what it means.

This bugs me--the reply. "Let me guess"....that if this fellow was talking about marriage, then..."but what he really means is obedience. He talksed about coming together, but what he really means [is] you have to compromise, or else." One way street with these guys and they can't stand it.

yep.  20 years ago, if you heard the u-s-a chant, you'd probably think you were at the olympics or something.  the last 4 years changed that, and it may be a while before it goes back to ~normal.

also baseball caps with sportcoats.  may you die and never come back.

Don’t forget their co-opt of the word “patriot” as if voting for a demagogue makes you one, compared to like, going to war and putting your life on the line for the country.

It was always your country's flag and without going too b_t or Anastasis it has been used for ugly purposes around the world as long as you've been alive.

What people are talking about here right now is essentially that they allowed the disgusting element to appropriate the flag by abandoning it themselves for the last 4 years. If you feel you must respond to the idiots who put 5 flags on their truck and a big Trump sticker on it the proper retort isn't taking down your flag. It's putting 5 flags on your truck and a TRUMP SUCKS DONKEY DICK sticker on the back window.

hmmm...i guess i get that.

but for me, it's admittedly a matter of pride - Trump was my president for 4 years and i was ashamed of that. i was fucking embarrassed

i am no longer, that's really all i want to convey with the symbolism.

and also...it's MY fucking flag and MY fucking country, as much as it is the morons, traitors and charlatans. i refuse to let them have sole ownership of this symbol.

Huckleberry, sir, I like you and your posts. You're forthright and consistent with your thoughts.

But you're clouding my jam.

Maybe go turn on some Sade or  Ornella Vanoni and relax. I've backed off the Ledge for the day and there's nothing like walking into the study near the fireplace and listening to a Mr. Grumpypants remind me of history when he could be fixing everyone a celebratory aperitif.

We could all have little American flag toothpicks in the olives except I frown on that because flag code.

Oh, and also, "melodramatic" isn't the word you're looking for (okay, it's not the ONLY word you're looking for).  The other word is "right."  When I sounded the alarm from the very beginning -- as in, I knew he would get the nomination.....and I said he would win the general....and I said he would be horrific at governing....and that something like January 6th was ALWAYS how this was going to end.....I was right.  I wasn't more prescient than anyone else - it was easy to see all of this shit coming.  I just didn't opt for intentional blindness, and refusal to believe the full level of shittiness in front of us, on full display (and I understand the folks who did -- realizing that this is what an entire branch of government has come to is more than any mind should have to process).

So, you'll get both Briskets, and like it.

Yeah.  After the election was called for Biden, I was downtown and saw a ton of cars driving up and down with people waving flags and my first thought was WTH are all the trumpers doing in town and why are they celebrating today.  Then I realized it was the non-trumpers celebrating and taking back the flag and everything it is supposed to stand for.

It made me realize how for four years the flag had been brandished as a weapon against anyone not in the trump cult.  And I let them ruin the flag for me, not because I hate America, but because I hated what they were turning it into and how they used that flag as a symbol of oppression.  And it reminded me that the flag could be a symbol of my country, instead of a weapon.

I didn't turn on the TV until after the speeches. I saw the gift-giving in the Capitol. I hope they leave that door window broken forever. It is history.

For the first time in four years when they cut to a shot of the White House I didn't clinch.

I was on a strange diet a few years ago where my crap would form into hard little pellets. When they got all smashed together, it was like extruding a sea mine covered in barnacles. That conglomerate would fight to avoid expulsion. I actually had to stop and take deep breaths to be sure I didn't blow a vein or my heart.

More detail than some will want to read. Still, I feel compelled to memorialize this. Feel free to skip it.

Spoiler

One of these monsters crowned and got stuck. I rocked back and forth. I strained. No good. Stuck. For the first time in my life, I had to go digital and break the goddamn thing up. Like pulling apart a popcorn ball coated with lead. Nasty work.

Such bliss when it was over even though there was residual discomfort. Such is the feeling today having rid the White House of the turdular malignancy whose spikes have made citizenship such a nightmare for so long.

It's probably because the US flag also and often flew alongside Confederate ones.  US flags were present during the Capitol storming but it was the Confederate flag that I remember because of its desecration.  I'm glad to have our flag back, solo, along with a more dignified meaning.

And, the full text of Amanda Gorman's poem:

Quote

“The Hill We Climb”
Amanda Gorman

When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade. We’ve braved the belly of the beast, we’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace and the norms and notions of what just is, isn’t always justice. And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it, somehow we do it, somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished.

We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one. And, yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect, we are striving to forge a union with purpose, to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man.

So we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another, we seek harm to none and harmony for all.

Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: that even as we grieved, we grew, even as we hurt, we hoped, that even as we tired, we tried, that we’ll forever be tied together victorious, not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division.

Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one should make them afraid. If we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in in all of the bridges we’ve made.

That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare it because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it. We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it. That would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy, and this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can periodically be delayed, but it can never be permanently defeated.

In this truth, in this faith, we trust, for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us, this is the era of just redemption we feared in its inception we did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves, so while once we asked how can we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us.

We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be, a country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free, we will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation, our blunders become their burden. But one thing is certain: if we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright.

So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left, with every breath from my bronze, pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one, we will rise from the golden hills of the West, we will rise from the windswept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution, we will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the Midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked South, we will rebuild, reconcile, and recover in every known nook of our nation in every corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful, when the day comes we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid, the new dawn blooms as we free it, for there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.
