Defense showed positives for the first time the entire season in second half. Still horrific playcalling at times particularly in first half (their OC also seemed to call a bad game in the second). Got dominated in the run game in first half despite this team being completely one dimensional.

Feels great to get a win but I still think big changes need to be made (goodbye PK if it were me). Defense showed negative progress all season except this second half. Just about every position group sucked. Playcalling was awful all season long. I got to think an offensive mind like sark has recognized this isn't only on the players.

Amazing it took the whole season for them to bench BJ.  KSU play calling want the best but our linebacker play was much better this game.

LB play definitely improved a lot

Overshown and Brock would have had a lot of tackles against this team. KSt Qb was ass my man.

Also, KST scored 3 points after Foster was pulled. I’d like to see an alternate universe where Foster was pulled after Arkansas.

Enjoy selling insurance BJ.  It’s one thing to suck, another to be a poor senior leader with constant poor effort.  Some of these kids are going to have a reality check when no one from the NFL answers the door when they knock and when no other decent power 5 team wants to take them in.  Like Rod Babers was saying, even if we weren’t competing for the big 12, they still have to put out good film.  Which teams are going to take them after watching their film?  This season was full of entitled players, with selfish attitudes, and I can’t call them a team.

Glad we finished the season with a win.  I guess they can pat themselves on the back for not losing 7 in a row.

Time to bring in guys that love football and love the work that goes into it and love to compete.

I don't remember seeing Foster in the fourth quarter. Did we finally apply consequences for deciding which plays he doesn't fuck with? In the last game of the season?

Jaylan Ford is a big upgrade over Overshown. Gbenda was still meh but the overall result was positive.

Gbenda athleticism and physicality saves him a lot, if that light bulb just ever goes off In his head he could definitely be a great contributor and 1-2 punch with Ford

He was pulled after the Howard TD.

There are guys I look at that just don’t fit schemes at Texas. I think if he was at Baylor or OK St he might actually have had a shot at the league. I don’t think he ever played well in any defense at Texas.

Correct and Sark made mention of it in the post game presser without naming him

I want him back badly. Excellent defensive mind with a knack at finding linebackers.

His horrible recruiting started the bad trend of no LBs. Great coach though.

woa woa woa....Both of those defenses you listed actually want players with effort, heart and tenacity, Foster has none of those

Eh.  He recruited Nwokopara back when we could recruit anyone, which was definitely dumb, but otherwise he was getting highly regarded recruits and our LBs played well.   Muckelroy, Keenan Robinson, Emmanuel Acho, and Jordan Hicks were all NFL guys from his era.   We have produced like three other NFL LBs since the mid 90s (DD Lewis, Derrick Johnson and Malik Jefferson), so I’d say Muschamp was the gold standard of running the LB room for about 25 years here.

He recruited the following LBs while on campus

Dravannti Johnson
Emmanuel Acho
Tariq Allen
Patrick Nkwopara
Jordan Hicks
Tevin Jackson
Aaron Benson

So he was 2 out of 7. He was a shitty recruiter.

The defense was completely different when you take out players that don't give a shit. Adimora and Thompson should have been the primary safeties for most of the season. Most of Vaughn's big runs came at the expense of Schooler getting schooled.

All I know is the D was much better with the Brock O twosome out.

The d was much better cause the KSU QB couldn’t complete a pass.

That and Jacoby Jones killed a KState drive with a 10 yard loss.

Run D was as crappy as it’s been except for about 4 plays.

The edges are still an issue. Ovie gets caught peeking inside or cutting under a block, but made his best play on the speed option on 4th down. Maybe it finally sunk in.

Yes, that was an awesome play. The difference between winning and losing.

Jones came out inspired. Last play he chased the QB then got in on the tackle. We needed that effort all year. Same on his 10 yard tackle for loss.

I don’t know that anyone was great, but there were lots of individual plays made.

I thought Barron looked good. I hate why it happened, but glad he got the last 2 games.

Running 2 DTs and 2 “Edge” players in a Nickel against option teams make setting the edge consistently difficult. Noticed a lot more 3 down looks and even some 3-4 in the 2nd half.

Jacoby opposite Ben Davis is much more plausible combo. Ovie is a pass rush specialist. So he wont win many battles and will lose confidence, technique, and stamina. A microcosm of the entire defense this year.

I think Ovie’s biggest issue is he is too concerned with making the tackle. He got blasted, when he tried to stop and take a step inside on an outside run.  If he would just play contain and trust someone will make the tackle if he turns it in, he would be so much better. Thornton gave up the edge on the TD in similar fashion.

Mostly Ovie’s biggest issue is that he’s not a defensive end. In 2005, Brian Orakpo was 215 lbs, and played a role as a backup and on passing downs. We didnt rely on him to set an edge against 300lb linemen. By his 4th year, he obliterated everyone he played against. He was the prototypical end in a Nickel.

And imagine freshman string-bean Brian Orakpo plays end for this team. Do you think he holds up an entire season and is allowed to mature and develop into a monster? I dont. asking dudes to do things they cant do is a recipe for failure and stunts the growth of players.

We’ve lost a year. Which player on defense has gotten better? What will change?

I think you over playing size on the edge. I would be on your side if he was getting rolled, but to my eye most of his issues are poor technique/IQ.. He tends to go back in forth between getting too far up the field and peeking inside. I think that is far bigger issue than how wide his ass  is at the moment

You’ve seen Ovie hold up ever against legit D1 line talent for two plays in a row? Why put him in that position? Jacoby opposite Ben Davis gives us a chance. Ovie opposite Thornton makes could work. Ovie opposite Jett Bush, no chance, and I saw that plenty of times against Kansas vs a freshman QB. Its madness.

Its like asking your cavalry to get off their horses and stand next to your infantry. They may hold up a bit and try, but you might as well put infantry units in their place.

Alfred Collins and Broughton will throw guys around. You sacrifice speed rushes and contain, but at least you’re not giving away first downs. And you’re better able to hold up in the 2nd half.

Against a team with a shitty passer - and we’ve played quite a few of those - your defensive scheme should not be relying on one edge player as a single point of failure to prevent long runs.

Yes - the gameplan should have been to sell out at all costs to stop the run and make the backup QB (planning to redshirt by the way) with a 52% completion rate beat you consistently through the air.  It's basic common sense. I've saw several times in the 1st half we were in our typical two high safety look playing bail coverage, like we're facing fucking tom brady throwing to randy moss. It's maddening.

I am talking about his play, you want to make this about PK. Hard to say what works, when you see a player play undisciplined more times than not. Broughton isn’t throwing anyone around at this point in his development. Collins has been at DE for quite awhile and his play is very inconsistent

no, on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 we actually got stops, something we haven't done all year. Brock is a crock of shit

It's not, just the guys behind the edges were horrible too. Schooler was killed in space against Vaughn, just like he was all season. The scheme was set up for failure because of the bad players trying to implement it. Even the edge players Texas brought in were not great at their previous schools. Davis and Thornton were brought in more for culture than their actual play on the field.

Texas is bringing in 2-3 guys that could likely start at edge in Kwiatkowski's preferred 2-4-5 alignment as freshmen.

Yes, that should be the game plan when you are comfortable with your secondary not getting torched. This secondary would get torched if they had to hold up in coverage, because when opposing teams tried to throw it, they could with relative ease. I think we need new coaches at WR and CB.

We need to stop having our corners bail out immediately when the ball is snapped every single play. We play with 8 yard cushions on 3rd and 2. The only way this happens is if the DC wants it to. I think the secondary coach is just doing what he’s told. The scheme issues come from the top.
