You dudes just bring me back in.

On the TD run, the problem is first and foremost Richardson. He engages no one. He along with the safety are playing a WR screen that wasn’t even part of the offensive plan. There is only one of 3 guys that even participates yet he’s the one called out. Does Brock need to make the play? Sure.

On that play, we have two guys covering the same gap. Richardson doesn’t see the ball and in fact turns his damn back to it. If he reads the play, he’s got a solo tackle at or near the LOS. Or at worst case, he provides enough force so that Brock does get there. Tapp does a poor job too. The RB is running right at Turner-Gooden. So order of priority of failure is Richardson, LTG then Brock/Tapp.

Go back and watch it now.

Also on the pass play that is Brock’s fault who the hell knows. But a DB did miss a tackle that resulted in about 30 extra yards.

I’ve watched last years games a shit ton. And after that Ford is not a better player. He’s just fucking not. You assholes would rather see a guy not get near the play than see him get close but not make it. Ford is not consistently better at taking on blocks, at staying on his feet, at getting off blocks, at finishing tackles, at finding his drop zone, at play recognition or at helping his teammates make plays. Last week I watched the WVU game again. Brock’s last of the season and next to last of the season to see how Ford “improved.” Ford wasn’t better and the team results were not better when Brock wasn’t on the field.

Last year the Dline was probably #1 or #2 along with DBs tackling people for the defensive issues. 2 missed tackles last night out of the DBs. DMO had 13 tackles and 1.5 TFLs in game 1 last year against a vastly superior team. Sorrell, Coburn and Ojomo may have all played better last night than any Dline guy last year. They caused more havoc and kept LBers cleaner. It is and always has been about the guys upfront. If you want Overshown to keep making plays, don’t let him get beat to hell. Comparing game 1s year over year, the ILBs were more productive last year than this year. This isn’t particularly noticeable when the Dline is dominating.

I don't care if it's PK or GP, nor do I care that it was ULM -- the tackling angles and basic technique were better.  That doesn't mean we're gonna hold 'bama to 30, nor is it automatically the end of the world if we don't.

Exactly. We saw improvement that could lead to a middle of the road P5 defense if they keep improving. And while it's largely because of how shitty the defense was last year, that was actually the best we could have hoped for in the first game. Even the most optimistic of fans coming into this season were hoping for a top 10 offense and a top 50 defense.

Overshown looked better, Coburn looked better, Sorrell looked like a beast, and I don't recall anyone standing around looking completely lost.

There were a couple of times when their quarterback got loose on what would've been 15+ yarders last year and he got corralled after 3 or 4.

We looked much, much better.

That said, it's just ULM.  The next couple of games will tell us a lot more, obviously.  But I feel like we're already trending the right direction.

Losing a guy that was shaving points is a plus as well.

Exactly. The ball could have been caught and, arguably should have been, by the WR that was wide open in front of him.

I’d like to know a couple of things with the this data that someone with past experience could help me with. What’s the threshold for useful sample size within a game? Calling someone “sub-replacement level” for a sample of 15 snaps or fewer is questionable. Is there a consistency metric that will be added in the following weeks? I have a hard time believing Jamison will ever be above tier 3 for coverage ability when facing good teams who don’t give up big plays to him. There should also be separate metrics specifically for coverage, pass rush, tackling, etc, or some other proof that scoring staffs this way at least correlates to defensive success. Again, that’s not my area, but I’m interested to know what backs all of it up.

Not 100% sure, but I think the productivity metrics become cumulative as the season goes on.

I believe ULM was 4-5 targeting Jamison, including a big 3rd down throw. The other was the pick 6 off the WRs hands. I dont see that as a great game on defense, maybe Dunlap is including the block.

Here's the play. There was plenty of fail, but Brockermeyer is the worst offender. Richardson is blitzing... well, let's call it running aimlessly up field. The fact that Richardson bit so hard on the WR moving like there was going to be a screen suggests he at least thinks he's responsible for that receiver/area. Meanwhile, Brockermeyer just stands there for a second or two, plays patty-cake with the o-lineman, then misses the tackle.

I know exactly what Richardson is doing now.  We have an outside blitz on and he doesn't realize the nickel is taking it in this formation.

Brockermeyer is fine here.  Even if he were a better athlete, the RB just changes his angle slightly and still scores.

Yes, they were ranked last year and went in to have a decent season..better than ours and enough to get their coach a P5 job

Here's some stuff we did – part 2 (base package)

Now "base" doesn't mean most common or default anymore.  It just means 4 DBs.  Our default defense most of the season will be the above nickel.  We rolled this out against 12 personnel, and it didn't see the much use this game.

We played a 3-4 Tite with DMO replacing the nickel and DTD playing Will.  This lines up well with how we were using DMO in certain pass rush sets.  Dorbah rotated in for DMO.  The first time it appeared was Sweat, Murphy, Broughton up front, but the defensive line was already rotating at that point and I wouldn’t read into it.  If you read anything about anything last year you can probably stop here, but part 3 is immediately following.

image.png.1776652a95ff0f5d5ed98472429ef1d1.png

It’s not always a 50 front (5 on the line), DMO played like a OLB when they set twins to the field:

image.png.57bf213536a2cfacb9dcfbecc0462658.png

This one is interesting for three reasons: (1) this is likely the starting lineup, (2) we use the boundary safety to take the slot so that the Jack (Ovie) can stay on the line - this is one of the rare times we aren't two-deep, (3) we slide the formation over to the right guard to handle the overloaded front, but do this by flipping over a DE (Sweat) to the guard and sliding the Nose (Coburn) into the A-gap, which I think kind of makes sense so they can play against the same OL they've seen all game.

image.png.3b8d2cdc4ece2694fe4b12105732ef5b.png

I didn’t really see us do anything special as far as calling.  Sorry, this one is pretty lame.  I've already got Part 3 drawn up, which is also pretty simple but actually new this year and something we've been missing.

Here’s some stuff we did, part 3 - the pass rush, simple speed version

It was simple but effective.  We move DMO to field edge in place of Sorrell (Fox in PK language).  Put DTD at Will.  Let the edges play wide and rush hard.  Everything else plays the same as the nickel.  And that’s basically it.  We tended to be in Man 2 for this, which is also something new and not very B12-like.

image.png.2c7670d1f9285174c2f5ce84371b1385.png

We did show this stunt once or twice, which involves the DT (Ojomo) washing out the OL for the NT (Coburn) to get free.  The example drawn is at 1Q 13:32.

These are examples of the fiercely debated Stack defense.  Which is the other 3rd down package.  Theres a lot that we did and could do in it.  I'll go over in Part 4.

ULM did go back to the RB later in the game.  I believe against Richardson who caught the RB just before the sticks.  LBs in man coverage are always gonna be a concern.  The risk/reward of it is that if we blitz that side and play zone there's not enough blockers and no open RB.  Which is basically what happens in clip 3 - minus the need to blitz.

Those short side CB blitzes are a Gary Patterson trademark.  GP's fingerprints were all over this game.  I hope that continues.

And, yeah, it's probably predictable and unfair to give GP the credit instead of PK, but I nonetheless absolutely believe that's the case.  We have seen these things from TCU for the last 20 years and saw none of it from PK last year.

There were a lot of blitzes. There were some classic PK blitzes. I will give Patterson more credit for getting the secondary and front 7 together. I think he has done his job in coaching the coaches

Yes. And I was referring to the last drive dumbshit. 90 seconds left. Anyone with a brain knew short plays were coming. We do not press and let their are receivers get downfield without interruption. Just preventing the big play. Hence…prevent fucking defense.
