Any amateur NFL Capologists on here?  Trying to understand what the Patriots did with the Matt Judon contract.  They gave him a 18 million signing bonus and his salary is 1 million this year, then 11 million, 11 million, 9 million over the next 3 years.  So what counts towards the cap this year?  I heard Michael Lombardi on the radio today saying Belichick was loading up the salary cap this year since they had so much to spend assuming the new TV contract in a couple of years would raise the salary cap so that these deals he is signing now would look good when there is more money for other teams to spend in the future.  What he is doing is similar to the fluke that allowed the Golden State Warriors to get KD.  He happened to be one of the few teams to have a ton of money due to the Covid opt outs last year and knowing the cap is going up next year he can load up now on free agents that are all in their prime and not old ring chaser type of guys.  It’s Belichick trying to zig when everyone else zags type of a deal.

So..... Judon's cap number (6.5m) is relatively low this year for the rest of his contract.  His signing bonus is guaranteed (18m)and then this year's salary (1m) and next year's (11m) and then a roster bonus in 2023 which is insignificant.  So in reality, this looks like a 2 year, 30m deal on a 4 year chassis.  Pats can reasonably get out of it after 2 years if he's not productive or convert some salary to the future to signing bonus money in years 2/3 for more cap space if he's a stud.  In this specific case, this isn't really what Lombardi is talking about, although they are spending tons of upfront cash.  Instead, they pushed the real monetary cost to the 2022 season

I think the guy is a nice addition. Just not a $140 million nice addition.

He will never see that money. He'll either continue to restructure one year at a time and push the money forward or get cut. It's just cap machinations by the team that invented all this crazy void year borrow against future cap stuff. The only number that's real is his cap hit this year which is 12 million.

So the Dolphins sign will fuller and will more than likely draft devanta smith or jaylon waddle. Trying to give tua as much help as he can get

Can Tua throw the ball further than 10 yards down the field? 2020 stats say no.

The rare lose-lose deal in my estimation. Cash-strapped Steelers retain a good-not-great player at a position where they appeared pretty well stocked for the future (and it appears the price of doing so will be Nelson). And then I just think it's foolish for JuJu to forego that much cash. Particularly when last year's QB play makes it seem like a stretch that he'll bolster his value going into next year's market

Yeah, this deal is baffling for both sides. The Steelers don’t really need him and are right on space, and if you’re Juju, why the fuck would you choose to have Roethlisberger as your QB for less money when you could’ve played with Mahomes or be a more featured receiver in the ravens offense? Seems like there’s no better place to go on a one year prove-it deal than KC and they were offering a better contract. Just strange all around.

Short fucking stint.

Quote

The Miami Dolphins waived 2020 first-round offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson on Saturday, just days after acquiring him in a trade with the Tennessee Titans.

Wilson was hours late for his physical and team onboarding process, skipped multiple optional workouts that he agreed to attend on Thursday and Friday and declined support service help that he was offered, all in his first official week with the team, sources said.

Miami was aiming to take a low-risk flier on Wilson, who was acquired with a 2022 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2021 seventh-round pick on a deal that was agreed to on March 8, but finalized earlier this week. His guarantees were voided due to his suspension with the Titans, so he's owed no money, and the loss to Miami is receiving a seventh-round pick one year later.

The Patriots' heavy free agency activity makes me think they're looking to fill as many holes as possible before the draft so they can bundle some picks to move up to get a QB.

Yeah -- lots of talking heads saying same thing.

Lots of smoke around maybe the Bama QB Mac Jones for Patriots

Danny dimes finally has a #1. Let’s see if that unlocks him. I can’t rule it out

Kenny Golladay signing leaves Daniel Jones, Giants' offense no more excuses

The New York Giants had questions prior to their meeting with former Detroit Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay. About some off-the-field stuff. His behavior last season. His hip and injury history.

They signed him anyway, agreeing to four-year deal for $72 million that could be up to $76 million with $40 million guaranteed.

Golladay made the Giants feel comfortable enough that what some close to him call a quiet personality and sometimes aloof nature was going to fit into coach Joe Judge's program, and that the guaranteed $40 million would be a prudent investment rather than one of those deals that in two years makes you snicker at the thought it ever had a chance of working.

This 31st-ranked Giants offense is adding the No. 1 wide receiver it desperately needed and getting running back Saquon Barkley back from a knee injury that cost him most of the 2020 season. The Giants also acquired another tight end and red zone playmaker (Kyle Rudolph) and took a flier on perhaps the fastest player in the league with the signing of wide receiver John Ross and his 4.22 40-yard dash.

There are no more excuses for Giants quarterback Daniel Jones or offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Year 3 is the time to turn the "conviction" general manager Dave Gettleman and the rest of the Giants' brass has in Jones into results and victories.

Seahawks sign DE Hyder, release Reed, then sign Dunlap back.

Big vote of confidence in Poona holding down the middle to go with his extension.

Hard to see keeping KJ Wright unless he really just doesn't have a market for himself outside of SEA. Cutting Reed created the space to sign Dunlap, back to having no money available without major restructure for Russ and Bobby
