Will is the biggest moron of them, but yes there are numerous dumbasses on the Pirates.  The 2nd baseman Frazier should have been standing on 1st the whole time and just been yelling at the dumbass to turn around and throw him the ball....or at least be standing there for when the catcher had to throw to first.

This.

And to compound it, the outfielder backing up first also missed.  Something I didn't notice until watching the jomboy recap of it.

I thought you're it out if you give up trying to advance, but that apparently only applies to dropped third strikes.

If that was true any rundown ever would be an automatic out. I weep for the kids that used to be subjected to your umpiring.

Pretty clearly implied that he's talking about advancing to first base. The batter-runner obviously can't legally occupy home at the end of the play. In most rundowns the runner can conceivably occupy either base at the end of the play.

They were apparently shifted on the play, so he was way around in the SS position, but yeah.

Or the RF should have run in.  Outfielders love to get involved in the infield.

Was talking about the batter, not a runner.  I guess I should have been more clear, rather than relying on some nuanced thinking on your part.

Upon further reflection I am going to lay off of Will Craig moving forward. Maybe because I'm getting soft in my old age and the little league team I coach lost the championship game last night, but somewhere in that now somewhat highly paid man is still the little kid who dreamed of making the major leagues. And less than two weeks after realizing that dream he will now forever be associated with one of the worst plays in baseball history. That's gotta fucking sting.

I shall now spread the hate toward the rest of his team, absolutely none of whom yelled at him to just step on first base as confirmed by his teammates after the game. I mean for fuck's sake it would have just taken anyone on the Pirates to pull their head out of their ass. At least his manager and teammates tried to shield him by owning up that fact in postgame.

let's not overlook the batter who stops and signals safe and stands there for a moment before advancing to first

Unless I missed the comment, the catcher wasted time trying to apply the tag at home. If he runs Baez down and tags him, inning over.

This whole chain of events occurs because Baez half assed it to first. If he runs hard, he beats it or forces an immediate tag.

Argument could be made Baez ran outside his lane there at the dirt in front of home.

He’s the same guy that applied a perfect no-look tag mid celebration in the WBC. He gets a pass.

Yes the catcher also should have been pointing at Baez telling Craig to just tag him or go touch first.

And I don't see the argument on your last comment. Baez didn't move outside his initial path until Craig was throwing the ball to the catcher. Outside the baseline is only against the rules if you're doing it to avoid a tag attempt.

Not true. I’ve seen it called many times when the runner goes outside or inside the line in an attempt to interfere with a throw.

That is a separate rule and that runner is out for intentionally hindering a throw, not specifically for going out of the baseline. There is another rule about the baseline, but that one is more about giving up rather than actually attempting to advance or retreat by going out of the baseline.

Because I'm not the target audience for these, there's no point in me expounding on how much they suck.  I will say, however, that they are an improvement over these:

Even before I saw this reply I was wondering if LaRussa was also the manager when they wore shorts but not quite.  The shorts game was in '76 and his first stint managing the White Sox started in '79.

I weep more for the guys subjected to our training staff. But yes Nevin has to be one of the worst 3B coaches out there today. So many shitty sends.

Usually you let your pitcher take care of things the next inning.  Lenny never waits.

Lulz.  I remember reading about that play the day after it happened, but I don't know that I'd ever seen the video.  Yes, kids, we did not have the interwebs back then.

Lenny was not one to mess around.  And you've also gotta love the 1B immediately coming off the bag to tackle Randle after Lenny belted his pitcher.
