Random thoughts that don't warrant a thread

Thanks for reminding me that I have been intending to read Umberto Eco's Foucalt's Pendulum again.

The evidence of advanced civilizations is overwhelming & id assume it will only grow. Who’s to say we aren’t the 5th or 6th reincarnation of man. The planet is ever changing.

I made a thread on this a couple mins ago called Sausage McGriddle but it probably belongs in here.
What y’all boys think about the “lost city” or lost knowledge in general? I had to do a research paper on the culture of ancient civilizations a couple days ago. I came away pretty intrigued by the similarities & connections between these lost civilizations. I studied quite a few ancient civilizations & their origins. People from all over the globe. The Mayans, The Egyptians, The Gauls from France, Tribes from the Canary, Basques from Spain, Frisians from the Netherlands, Aztecs, Armenians tribes etc. All these people separated by time and distance, and yet they all talk of their origins from a submerged region of the Atlantic Ocean. I didn’t mention it in my paper but I thought I’d toss it out on surly full on off-season style

I don't know about all that, but you know those little plastic markers that come with plants that you stick in your garden so you can remember what you planted in that spot?

I'm pretty sure that is what the Moas of Easter Island are.

Saw this headline today: "Rhino poacher trampled to death by elephants then eaten by lions at Kruger National Park in South Africa"

And now Radiohead's Karma Police will be in my head for the rest of the day

I don't know if you're in the middle of a 3 day acid trip or what, and I like fun theories as much as the next guy, but no. We are not the 5th "reincarnation of man". As for evidence of advanced civilizations I have no idea what you're talking about. Slave labor and hundreds of years can accomplish a lot and move a lot of big rocks around if you let it.

The Greeks, Romans, ancient China, the Islamic world in the middle ages - to an extent the Myans and Incas - these are all old civilizations with very well recorded history that were advanced in at least one fashion well beyond their time (relative to the rest of humanity). I think you're kind of shooting in the dark if you want to claim that civilizations before any of those I listed were making similar breakthroughs or using technology not found until thousands of years later.

We dig up the remains of animals that existed hundreds of millions of years ago. We have a very good understanding of the history of the planet - albeit some mysteries still remain. If there was some lost, highly technologically advanced civilization from thousands of years in the past we would have found it by now.

Counterpoint:  "Nuh-uh."

By the way, I've been on plenty of 3 day acid trips, and I never once took Erich von Däniken to be any more serious than L. Ron Hubbard. Life is trippy enough as is without having to illuminati the fuck out of it.

I go to Europe/Middle East twice a year, where tipping culture doesn't exist.  I'm always told how service at restaurants is sub par in those places, but I've never noticed a difference.  I place my order, they bring drinks, refills, offer dessert.  I've never noticed a difference when they don't get tips.  It's not like tipping guarantees you stellar service in the States.

My experience has been that the servers are extra nice to American tourists because many inexperienced American tourists don't know how tipping works in Europe. Many will tip 20% out of habit if the service is good.

I wrote a research paper for three days and it was only aided by cheap liquor. I think you should revisit human origin in the scientific community today. There’s much more relevant pieces to the puzzle that suggest that we’ve hit the reset button, even as early as 12,000 years ago.

It's been my experience that service culture is almost entirely independent of compensation model and has more to do with other elements of the overall employee experience. Well paid employees who are treated like maggots otherwise tend to be surly and bad at creating a positive customer experience. Employees who are treated well tend to treat customers well; pay is only one part of that equation, though, so in a restaurant context, it can work regardless of whether it's a tips or salary based compensation model.

I think you should present some findings if you want anyone to take you seriously. I'm not doubting there have been numerous increases and declines in global human population preceding the end of the black death. That does not constitute a "reincarnation of man" or the loss of advanced technology.

There is just no plausible way you can assert that anything resembling even bronze age technology existed before the advent of agriculture - which was 12,000ish years ago at the earliest.

Again, were we doing more advanced things before that, we would have found it by now.

You’re right, I might fuck around and drop a whole thread of juicy thoughts/insights I have on this topic. Although I think your approach is offbase. You’re trying to justify your stance with the unfound remains of steel, plastic, glass, machines, and porn magazines. Its as if you’re crowning this era of technology the gold standard without knowledge of what existed then. I’m not married to one ideal about our past but It’s obvious to me that the truth is still to be determined.

Apparently there was a Rogan podcast discussing this theory with geologist & historians. I'm half way through on my lunch break & they've covered some of the relevant evidence that i've researched although its dated now, theres been more recent discoveries. I would give it a listen when working out or on a long commute.

Recently heard the use of "Get thee behind me, Satan" on the part of a guy eavesdropping on a conversation between two anthropology professors.

After the guy interrupted, quarreled and quibbled, and then retreated, one prof says to the other, "Why does the idea having Satan on his backside excite him so much?"

The other thought he was being clever by replying "He was clearly casting pearls before swine," but got trumped by the first: "Well, at least it wasn't anal beads. No one likes it when somebody is tossing around used anal beads."

Physical or cultural?

One of each, I think. I know the cultural guy pretty well, but the other guy was talking about an old phrenology textbook he found at a garage sale recently.

What was the nature of the eavesdropper's rant? Which anthropologist gave which response? Did you hear this shit in a bar?

So many questions.

It must have been the physical anthropologist who made the crack (pun intended) about anal beads. A cultural anthropologist wouldn't make that joke because anal beads are a cultural/sexual phenomenon dating back centuries. Maybe millennia. (I confess I'm not an expert.)

I think we need a full debriefing on the whole episode.
