Random thoughts that don't warrant a thread

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen a woman working in a barber shop.  Weird.

Lotsa gay dudes in higher-end places though, that was never weird for me.  But I usually just get my cut from my wife, sometimes spring for Supercuts or Bird's Barbershop.

Although a couple times before Covid, I got these insanely discounted coupons for the Boardroom on Bee Caves Road.  Like a beer, shampoo, cut, and neck rub for just $18+ tip.  One day my "stylist" or "hairdresser" looked like the doppelganger for the pornstar Jessa Rhodes.  And yes, during the wash and the neck rub, it certainly moved.  I don't k now they stayed in business during Covid-19 with the usual package being like $55, but they're still there.  She, sadly, has moved on.

When I was 12 or 13 the barber I went to got a big tittied redhead to come and cut hair with him in his shop.  Her tit massages on the shoulders while she cut hair brought in a huge increase in business.  For a young Scheiss, it was a novel and exciting experience.  Alas, the barber's wife found out about the new partner and forced him to let her go.  Since that time, I have never really liked getting my hair cut.

During Covid I started cutting my own hair.  About a year ago I was checking the top and back with a mirror when I saw what looked like a small tick.  I got my wife to look at it, and it wasn't a tick.  A couple of doctor visits later I had a scar on my head instead of the small stage 0 melanoma.  Make sure that you ask your barber, hairdresser, or whatever you call your hair professional to help keep an eye on your scalp.

I got tired of the guy who was cutting my hair and decided I could do just as good a job by myself. I went and bought clippers and a hand held mirror and it turned out I was right. I was paying him $17 for a clipper cut that took 15 minutes. I decided it wasn’t worth paying him $68/hr for his services. That was in Oct. of 2019. Two haircuts later the clippers had paid for themselves and I was ready when the pandemic hit. I haven’t looked back. I use the vacuum cleaner to sweep up the hair. I run the hose over my head and neck and itching is never a problem. I should’ve made the switch years before.

I like my GF's snatch shaved clean.  At some point in the last dozen years, she told me "if you want it shaved, you can shave it".

So, that's been our weekly routine.

Might be time for a touch up... She's getting a little stubbly, FWIW.

all of my haircutters seem like casts in some fucked up comedy.

first was an very flamboyant gay guy, who was intensely nosey in conversation.  then very sassy black ladies at the supercut.  then an old lady who asked me the same questions over and over again (how old are you; when did you move here), despite my going to her every 3 weeks for some years.  then a high likely closeted dude who just couldnt stop talking about dogs (that he doesnt own), and paris.  etc.

i dont think ive ever had a normal one.

"Describe all the people who have cut your hair in reverse chronological order with as much detail as possible" seems like one of those oddball "intense job interview" questions that seemed popular during the dotcom boom.

It's an interesting mental exercise. My highlights are a timelessly old 75lb. Korean lady when I lived in Los Angeles (best scalp massage and it's not close) and a spherically rotund black woman who had both a shaved head and a bleached mini-afro at other times from when I lived in NC (very entertaining shit talker, and a distant second in best scalp massage).

IDK how I feel about this.  Jackass drivers in every city in the world, regardless of race, income level, age, etc.  There are some tight parking lots here in Irvine and you know, some international drivers tend to abide by their own rules, well no rules.

I've never messed with another person's car though there's been moments I've been tempted to do so.

Ok, so a buddy of mine was cutoff by a young couple.  He throws up his hands like "wtf."  They laugh and then give him the finger.  When they leave their car, he lobs a full topo chico bottle at their car, doing some damage and drives off.

I got my haircut at this place off Riverside once.  They didn't have the machine that blows hair off your neck so the "stylist" used her mouth.

Mine haven’t been that interesting…

A bunch of crotchety old white guys. A woman on on crutches. A flamboyant Vietnamese-black guy. Lieutenant Ricker at the Wooten. A 30-40 YO Taiwanese woman who would rub her boobs on my teenage arm. My mom.

The last crotchety old guy was the best. Too bad the landlord ended his lease after he had been there for almost 40 years.

CO edibles >> CA edibles
however
CA flower >>>>>>> CO flower
you can tell California's been cultivating a long time

Pretty sure there’s a whole thread for this info, and the edibles aren’t made locally from the same plants? Why would one be better than the other?

I can't believe what just happened. Out of a fucking Seinfeld episode or something. I took my son and my nephews to Gatlinburg. Our rental is on the side of a mountain. Extremely steep. My nephew (16) has some kind of toe infection. My sister has been on me like no other about making sure he takes his script antibiotics 3x per day. I was texting her some pictures, she asked of course about the meds. I reminded him to take his last dose of the day. They are in the hot tub. The hot tub is located on the "ground" floor on the patio. I am in the kitchen and living room above. There is a patio on this level. It's maybe 9 feet from the balcony railing to where he is. He says drop it to me. I survey the situation. The hot tub is enclosed on 3 sides with floor to patio above patio slats. The open side/entry of the hot tub is not exposed to any area with a regular/low railing for 2 feet. I decided I could put the meds in a Ziploc in case he dropped it and it would float and be fine. I dropped it. Right into his hands. In the hot tub. Bounced off of his hands, and 5 feet diagonally to the left, over the railing and down the mountain. It has been an hour and I am still in disbelief. Photos from earlier for reference. Un fucking real. The photos could not illustrate how unlikely this was any better. PXL_20230623_222248897_MP.thumb.jpg.778e6060575ae4c6a796320be4aefe0a.jpgPXL_20230623_222252393.thumb.jpg.0ff21d5add4068aed8ea355145792841.jpg

Posting pictures of shirtless teenage boys in a hot tub on the internet, huh? Yeah, that's not weird.

My father gave my brother and I haircuts when we were growing up. He used the same trimmers on us that he used to trim our horses manes and tails.

His specialty was buzz cuts and the occasional flat top. I don't remember him ever cleaning the trimmer before or after use.

Haven't let a male barber touch my head since then. Only female barbers for me until I die.

There is a thread, yes.
Same flower? More likely the trim, and popcorn lowers.

Biggest diff is going to be extraction method, resulting concentrate, and recipes.

Had a toothache this weekend that just kept on getting worse. By 1AM this morning, I was leaving shitty voicemails on my dentist's cell phone, moaning that I didn't think I'd make it the 6 hours until his office opened.

Seriously, this was the second worst pain intensity I'd ever experienced; multiply that by the duration, and you get one miserable fucking Rimbo.

So naturally I end up with an emergency root canal this morning.

You know it's bad when, right after drilling the hole in your tooth, the dentist says "like popping a zit" while necrotic tissue oozes its way out of the hole...

i feel much better now

Damn, I've been there.  I was almost homicidal.  The relief from the novocaine, then the drilling, was exquisite.

The only worse pain that I've ever experienced was a weekend of dry socket after getting both of my lower wisdom teeth removed.  God, I love clove oil and pain killer packing.

Some random thoughts...

When I sleep, I like to pull the covers up just below my mouth.

If I fall asleep on the couch wearing just a t-shirt and shorts, no matter what the temperature it is in the house, I will wake up shivering violently until I warm up.

Friend of mine got murdered in November of 2020. They caught the guy in January of 2021 but he's been locked up in the county jail since then. Haven't heard anything about a trial

I filed an open records request with the county and they have no scheduled court or hearing dates at all for the case this year. Why would a murder trial be delayed almost 3 years?

It flat fucking mystifies me that people think nothing of playing their videos on their phones out loud (often at max volume) in public, especially eating establishments.

Or, even worse, let their little shit kids do the same with video games.

Ear buds and headphones exist and are cheap, you inconsiderate pinheads.

40 years ago Joe Delaney was a RB for the Chiefs, Joe didn't know how to swim.  He spotted 3 boys in trouble in a nearby pond and jumped in immediately to rescue them...  He saved one boy, unfortunately he couldn't save the other two or himself.  Hero.

I find it astonishing that people used to smoke indoors all the time and it was normal. I smoke cigs sometimes when I’m drinking but during the day it’s gross and makes me sick. I heard one explanation that made sense. When people wore three piece suits and heavy dresses back in the day without air conditioning, people stunk like like crazy indoors when the temp was 90 plus, and smoke smelled better. Other than that, it’s so gross.

You have no idea. It was everywhere, summer, winter, 24/7 365. Offices, schools, hospitals, buses, airplanes, submarines. It had nothing to do with body odor. It was just the way it was.

This. Everywhere. No one knew what cleanliness smelled like. I remember how blown away I was the first time I went to a bar where people couldn’t smoke because the law had changed. Crazy shit.

Right after we got married, my company had a sales promotion for it's dealers and some of us got to go to Hawaii. My wife was terrified of flying and had read that the safest place to be was in the rear of the plane. So we got seats in the last row on a 747, in the smoking section. As soon as we were airborne and the pilot turned off the no smoking sign, the cabin transformed into a 70's bar. Everyone in the cabin lit up at the same time and it looked like a fog had set in.

AMD(semiconductor for those not in the know) stopped allowing smoking in their buildings a few months before I started there in late 80s which I thought was odd to begin with given the contamination factor with the cleanroom suits and ICs.

I bet that was a neat time to be around all that tech in its infancy, starting to boom.

I remember going out when smoking was allowed everywhere and you just had to put up with it as a non-smoker. I don't miss that.

You ought to try that as an asthmatic.  Fuck smokers, sorry they are addicted, but back in the day they were real assholes about smoking when and wherever they wanted.  As smoking was being restricted in the 80's, I remember being out somewhere that smoking wasn't allowed and a guy asks my father if he minded if they smoked.  My father said actually I do mind, my son has asthma.  The guy pulled out a cigarette and lit it up and indignantly said "I was only asking to be polite!"

An yeah smoking flights were a lot of fun.

Yeah, both my parents smoked and somehow were only related to, and friends with, people who smoked even more.  Every function we ever went to, it was just people chain smoking all night, mostly indoors.  Looking back, there really was this film/haze on everything.  But I guess everywhere had it so nobody noticed?  And the car, with cloth seats, and that ashtray just brimming with butts (not in a good way).

I remember in 2005 (IIRC), Austin passed a resolution/law finally outlawing all smoking inside bars and restaurants, no special sections, nothing.  I think it even covered rooftops and patios (though maybe that was phased in later).  And hornfans and whatever the other message board after LFZ imploded, was filled with 20/30-somethings declaring it the death of the Austin bar/music scene.  Bars and restaurants would be going under left and right.  Smoking is part of the nightlife experience, we're all screwed, death of old Austin for the 37th time.  Flash forward 5 years later, then 10 years...we have more bars and restaurants per capita than nearly any city in the United States.  By the end of today, a craft cocktail bar, a wine bar, and 2 seafood restaurants will have opened up.

That smell in your hair on sunday mornings combined with the cat that put all the little socks on your teeth.  I'll never miss that again.

I don’t remember who coined the phrase (Carlin, maybe?) that a smoking section in a plane makes as much sense as a peeing section in a swimming pool.
The smoking section was always in the back. And it was party central back there. My wife smoked and loved to sit in the smoking section because everybody was just having a big party. She never had to pay for her drinks.
(queue the “I had your wife” jokes here).

Man. I used to smoke. Thought nothing of going to a local sports bar where everyone was smoking for hours at a time.

Last Christmas, after all the family stuff was done, me and a friend wanted to go have a drink, but the only place that was open was smoking place. I about vomited when I walked in.

Very interesting (and long) Wikipedia page about the military brat “subculture”.
I certainly can relate to most of it, particularly the changing relationships and feelings of not belonging to the civilian society.
Most Surlyites who are former military brats will probably identify with much of it too.

A few years ago, I was talking to my kids about growing up in West Germany and how great it was. I decided to plan a trip and jumped online to plot out all the stuff I wanted to show them. Then I got on google maps and discovered that the apartment building I lived in as a kid had been torn down, years ago. They built a hotel there. I was crushed. The trip plans were scrapped. I've decided Thomas Wolfe was right and I can't go home again.
