If Jesus were alive today, would he drive a car (or van or truck)?

Carpenter? Either work van or pickup. Whichever he got the best deal on. Scuffed up paint job, but well-kept mechanically and miraculously long service life.

I went through three of those buses, one in Europe, one in Africa, one in Texas, albeit only one was a Westphalia, and all in 60's and early 70's. The flat-4 air-cooled engine was a Porsche Sr. design intended for small aircraft, and one of the great engines ever made, used in both buses and Beetles. American mechanical maintenance was a disaster, though. Keeping #3 cylinder's valves adjusted was a once-a-month fifteen minute job, but had to be done with the engine stone-cold, not just cooled off. Do that and it runs forever. Pop on the 1600cc jugs, and run 70-80mph all day at 30mpg.

Having not done that, and blowing two #3 cylinders, I believe you.

Well, technically you do all four cylinders, but #3 runs the hottest because of the fan's air flow design. Solid lifters, gotta keep 'em adjusted. All you need are a 19mm box, 10mm box, flathead screwdriver, and a feeler gauge. When you first start, it's a once-a-week at least a little bit of adjustment on all four. After a month, every other week, and then once a month or so. Park it Friday night where you can slide under on Saturday morning, leave it stone cold, ten or fifteen minutes tops.

Haven't looked in years, but last time I did, there were still some manufacturers in Brasil making parts. Bet still plenty here and there.

Yep. Got a replacement engine from Brazil when I owned mine, back in the 90s. Porsche. So like a VW, but 2x price. :)

Wish I had it now, he said.

Back then I had a neighbor who went and got a Karmann Ghia convertible, and we built a 1600cc+ with Porsche-quality Brasilian parts. Also did same with running gear, and that sumbitch was a fucking blast to drive - run 100mph easy peasy.

The real question is will you rebuild?

Let's see what the insurance company says. 🤣

Actually not even sure if my insurance company will cover me next year... I live next to undeveloped land and a region park that burned 5 years ago and the fire got within 1/2 mile from us. Several friends in similar type environment had their policies cancelled.

Karmann Ghias are sexy AF. Old Porsche 365s are sexy AF. There's some guy with an old Volvo p1800, also sexy AF. Would love to buy a restored version of any of those.

I went through a lot of Volvos (couple of 1xx and bunch of 2xx), as well as VWs. Mainly for the kids as they started driving... wanted them in a bulletproof vehicle, and it worked. Always wanted a P1800, but one never appeared at the right time.

The old Volvos were built like tanks. My friend's family was moving back from Europe. At the port of Houston, they knocked a shipping container upside down. Inside the container was my friend's mom's Volvo station wagon. The car landed on it's roof, but there was no structural damaged. They fixed the sheet metal, and she drove it for another few years before passing it on to my friend's brother.

Wife has been dealing with pain, hearing loss in her left ear since coming home from Texas a week ago. Being the doting sympathetic husband that I am I started just mouthing words to make her think she’s losing her hearing completely, good thing for the spare bedroom has a comfortable bed.

I’ve been doing a similar thing. Mrs. NNM recently got hearing aids. I’ve been alternating using a very soft voice and very loud voice to help her adjust. Those darn things never seem to be set correctly.

With all the safety features and devices, I am curious how that happened. Most container-handling equipment is idiot-proof. But since it happened at POHA, they probably figured out some new fuckery.

I bet the Germans have a word for the specific type of optimism one feels after a larger-than-usual morning dump and the accompanying expectation that it will be reflected in a lower-than-usual daily weigh-in.

I Schitenfreude every week - not stepping on that scale in the morning until I'm empty.

I'm so fucking stupid. I was looking at a printed document with tiny text. It was difficult to even read with my reading glasses on.

My thumb and forefinger moved toward the sheet of paper, and I tried to zoom in...

I'm becoming senile.

Not gonna lie, done this more than once.  Sheesh.

My wife, kids and I are all in a Life360 group. I got it when the kids started driving and we've never gotten rid of it. But I find myself instinctively trying to track people that aren't in my group. Like if I'm meeting my sister for lunch or waiting for my buddy to get to the golf course. "Where the fuck are they?", I'll reach for my phone to check and feel like a moron.

Yep, same. I find myself getting irritated when I can’t track where my buddy is that’s meeting me for lunch.

I’d like to go back to pre-cell phone days. I really would.

What are the two nozzles that are spraying above the water temp and flow handle?

Bidet for Shaq?

Head scrubber for Peter Dinklage?

It hit me just above the belly button.  If it came out with more pressure, it might feel good on an achy back. I give up and am desperate enough to ask Surly...

Random thought today as I heard Snoop Dogg pitching T-Mobile or iPhones on the radio (and yes, I listen to terrestial radio because I'm old).

Is Gen X propping this guy up?

Boomers are like Linda Tripp-- this Snoop Doggy guy is violent and his music is vitrolic and don't let our kids listen to it.

Millennials weren't alive when Snoop Dog was popular save for like 6 weeks when the "Drop it like it's hot" Pharrel song was big 20 years ago.

Gen Z and Alpha don't know who this guy is, musically. He's their black Willie Nelson as a weed champion for legalization and culture, at best.

But Gen X. We love Snoop. We were the prime audience for MTV when Snoop's videos were on every other song and Death Row was a thing. We made The Gourds cover of Gin & Juice an unironic and cringy staple at our fraternity mixers. Enjoying Snoop is/was our personality.

We've taken a self-admitted violent gang-banger, who was once on trial for murder, and whose lyrics are the definition of misogny and turned him into a face of consumerism for an aging generation based on us not wanting to get old.

How else do we explain his appeal to cover the 2024 Olympics, his iPhone jingles, podcast with Martha Stewart, etc.?

Wait, now Snoop is performing at Trump's inauguration?

This guy will do anything for a buck, won't he?
