There's just that pesky thing about him being married to another man.

Which is just laughably insane to anyone with a functioning brain like yourself or millions of like-minded folks. His sexual preference supersedes his superior intellect in the year 2025 in America because too many insecure morons feel that takes precedence.

As a Michigan resident & voter, if like to say that is how we could get a better Senate candidate than the former mayor of South Bend: I'm pretty sure that is the only elected position he has held; I know he has national make recognition. But as a manufacturing and agriculturally driven state I don't see what he does for us ( meaning the people of Michigan)

I am not putting that label on him. If we can elect an incompetent clown 2 out of 3 times, well, anything is possible. I don’t believe we should bow to a bunch of morons who would have an issue with his choice of being married to a man. This stupidity has to be met and shouted down so to speak. He is what we need leading us. No more recycled old white guys. We have had plenty of them and it’s time to move past that. His last video he posted about this leak shows he’ll take the nice guy gloves off and hand out some FAFO when a serious breach of incompetence occurs.

He can't win.  America will not vote for a gay man.  Just stop.

You don't have to think that's a GOOD thing.  You just need to realize that it is a 100% TRUE thing.

We're not doing this anymore. YOU STOP saying what someone can or cannot be based on who they want to be with. It is not a true thing. It is carrying water for bigots who will not stop saying it. I look at my own life and think that I used to carry that water too by going right along with that thinking.  Once upon a time in this country the armed forces of the United States would not let African-Americans serve as anything but cooks. A narrative got pushed into people's heads that they weren't smart enough as a race to be trusted to fight with actual weapons. Then they got weapons and did some incredibly heroic things in Italy. That doesn't even take into account Doris Miller's heroism at Pearl Harbor three years prior.

This is so stupid that in 2025 people will posit that "This person can't run because of their sexuality." This crap has to stop. By 2028 the horrors that this group of morons will have unleashed upon America and the world will be stacked so high that we won't be looking at his sexuality as a reason not to vote for him. That we ever even considered it as a black mark against him is due to our own ignorance.

Dude.  I am JUST.  COUNTING.  VOTES.  I am not commenting on whether the REASON for those votes is meritorious, evil, or in-between.

Maybe SOMEDAY, this country will be ready for a gay man (spoiler: that someday, if it ever occurs, will be long after we're dead, if we even have a USA then.  Sorry, but we've gone so far backwards so fast, you don't even grasp it yet).  But that day is NO day soon.

I'm not saying he can't run because of his sexuality.  I'm saying that 1) HE CANNOT GET ENOUGH VOTES TO WIN 2) BECAUSE TOO MANY AMERICAN VOTERS WILL NOT VOTE FOR A GAY MAN.  You don't have to like that -- I don't like it.  But it's fucking true.  It is true because we are a stupid, shallow, and hateful nation.  YES, you are right, that it is a black mark IS due to our own ignorance.....but our ignorance, which is of near-infinite breadth and depth, is a real thing.  We have seen our true colors this past decade. It's horrifying.  But it's also ACCURATE.  We are a sick, cruel nation.  That's the truth.  Accept it, and work from there.

We are a nation with 77.3 million clowns. That is not all of us. We are also not cooked as a country. I am exiting stage right from America at some point, but not because I think this country won't do a 180. I think that it will and I think that the stigma that surrounds sexual orientation is on its last legs. Pete and I are attracted to different sexes, but I share his love of the country and I will no longer repeat what someone like him (or a woman married to a woman) can do when given the opportunity. His popularity is only going to go up the more stupid stuff this administration does and it's because he has a grasp of the issues and has found a way to communicate using social media that connects with people.

He may not get it in 2028 because I cannot predict the future. They may decide to return to Whitey McWhiterson and go with some 65plus out of touch white guy because, reasons. What I won't do though is keep repeating the narrative put out there by bigots. At a certain point you just have to stop adding it to the conversation. The best thing Pete, or any candidate in a similar position can do, is ignore that stuff and stick to the issues. Everything eventually changes, but not without pushback.

Ahh, I see.  You have faith in "the better angels of our nature."

I, on the other hand, believe in evidence.  And the evidence is...we are a shithole country.  Our dominant ethos is a blend of "cruel, vindictive, and hateful," and "just fine with cruel, vindictive, and hateful."  There are good people in this country.  We are hopelessly outnumbered, and evil wins.  It always does.

We are the country of slavery, genocide, lynchings, Jim Crow, attacking trans people, going backwards on acknowledging that gay people can exist, etc.  We have never even fully acknowledged that those ARE sins, much less sought forgiveness and reconciliation for them.  FFS, we're trying (and succeeding) to outlaw even mentioning them in education.

Your faith in this country and the people in it is entirely misplaced, and you are setting yourself up for even more disappointment.  This country is beyond redemption, which works out well because it is also not worthy of redemption.

You are known for your negativity regarding America. I do not put great faith in human beings but I do believe in using history as a guide. I look at history and see that these regimes never last. America will come out of this malaise and we will have to own this time period. That's it. The path to how America comes out of this is entirely up to the citizens of our country. You want to keep on keepin' on with the negativity that's your right. You get one life and again it's your right to waste it being negative all that you wish to do so. I did that long enough to learn that that mindset is abhorrent and pointless. In a universe that's roughly 13.6-7 billion years old I may get four score worth of years. That's a speck of sand on a seashore's worth of time in comparison. Better to make the best of things and see the best of this world than to grow old and miserable and think nothing and no one is worth saving.

She lost the electoral college in a blowout, which unfortunately is still what matters in elections here. She was not blown out at the ballot box, but she did lose there as well. For someone that had 100 or so days to run an election I thought she did okay. Not great, but okay. It's past now and nothing will change that though so you move forward.

Even though they all hate him, the right knows his words carry more weight than other current Dem officials.

How very Mack Brown of you. That's the epitome of how he killed football at UT towards the end.

Yes I choose to like people. I am not even naturally a people person. I'd rather just hangout with dogs or even go swimming with sharks again than spend copious amounts of time with people. That's just my personality. I do enjoy helping people and I run across enough good human beings to know there are plenty of them out there still. My neighbor the other day was going to wait to take the elevator because he had a bunch of stuff and had his wife and grandson with him. I told him to get in. We wound up talking for about 10 minutes and he tells me he's Marshallese. He asks me if I know where the Marshall Islands are and I say I do and I start talking about them. I tell I want to live there in the future as well as in Kiribati and he tells me his wife's family is from Kiribati. These are good people and there are so many of them out there. You want to keep to you and yours you do you. That does nothing to help move America is a good direction.

Running Pete is a sure fire way to lose the election. Which should not be the goal.

In the words of Rummy, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want to have. We’ve got an army of hateful, easily distracted morons. Changing that army will take time, meanwhile, there’s wars to win. Moral victories have limited worth, especially when the opposition is on a fast train to fascism.

Side note: my spellcheck didn’t recognize the word “fascism”. Interesting, that.

I think (and this is for @UpperWestside), that a Dem party reliant on the AA vote for winning majorities is not in a position to run a homosexual in an election where those can’t be sacrificed.  That particularly group, when surveyed, is very conservative when it comes to matters of gender rights.

But who knows, in the future maybe Trump or his successor continues to carve out young AA, particularly males, and that becomes less of a core constituency for the Dems.

Donald Trump won the popular vote by 1.48 percentage points. You have to go back to the 2000 election until you get closer than that.

Saying it was a blowout might  be a tad hyperbolic. 😁

Umm, when the Dems have to win the popular vote by ~3-4% to put a president in office, losing by 1.5% is ACTUALLY getting blown the fuck out.

If I had a magic wand, I'd only have to switch 132,385 votes around in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia to change the winner of the election.

If I did that, Trump's popular vote margin would only change to 1.4 percentage points.

Weird things can happen in our fucked up electoral collage system.

No offense, @UpperWestside, but that kind of happy talk and faith that something good will just happen is what distracts the electorate.

This isn't just another trough in the graph of the US's ups and down. This is a sea change. It's worse than the Civil War because nobody is really fighting for the republic. We lamely look to the Dems to do something. They're the wrong tool.

We should be in angry mobs trying to get at the enemies who have slimed into office due to election by anti-Christian Christians from the Catholic and Protestant side.

We have rule by fiat and an unelected person with no standing doing as he pleases with government agencies.

This is unprecedented. Maybe happy talk is the best way to go for your peace of mind, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's the way to anything.

Climate. Government. International economy. International rise of fascism. That's a lot of shit to try to talk away.

Don't know if this was intentional, but I like it better than "college" as it's more descriptive of how our electoral system actually reflects the will of the people.

I do not fool myself with anything. Every single generation of people thinks that what is happening to them is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened in history. This is not a good part of history, but it is not the worst and I am not going to get up each day thinking how awful this world is. A lot of human beings did not get to wake up today. Yesterday was it for them. I am thankful for today and thankful for the opportunity to do better than the day before. I have a finite amount of time on this rock like everyone else and I will make the best of it. Everyone gets to make that choice every single day. I just reached that point where all of the negativity is just pointless noise not worth participating in.

I do not like what I see in Washington, but waking up with Brisket’s attitude is a backwards way to think. Expecting the worst out of everyone is toxic and accomplishes nothing good.

You take a hyperbole-ridden binary view. Anyone not waking up as the Happiest Girl in the Whole USA must be riddled with dark thoughts and unable to see light. Same for anyone who doesn't share your notions that people always think things are bad, but they always get better. Lastly, you say you don't want to participate, but here you are pontificating.

As far as I know, you're a good guy with brains. The worldview expressed here is childish and surprisingly self-righteous. We who are not like-minded to you are not necessarily the opposite of you.

I wake up being thankful for another day and choose not to give into the negativity on a day not promised to me or a single other soul. It is a choice made to take advantage of today because if this is it I would prefer to not go out being angry about life.

Again my view is one shot at life that might be 80 years if all goes well in a universe that is about 13.6-7 billion years old. That lifespan is a speck of sand. You are darn right I am going to find it odd and say as much for anyone to be as negative as a few people constantly are on here when life is that short. None of us are living to be a million.

The defeatist Gen X circle jerk of "but he's GAY!" will never not be funny on this site though.
I bet you're right. But that's because Republicans will elect any piece of shit that makes it okay to be a piece of shit. Except Greg Abbott, they'll never elect a piece of shit with a broken dick as president.

I think y’all dog piling on UpperWestside is actually proving his point. You say you will vote for the democratic nominee, but aren’t doing shit between elections to change that close minded narrative by saying it’s not gonna happen to elect a gay man and to just run another old white guy. I think a gay man has more traction than any female sadly, but I’m not gonna stop promoting the party of inclusivity and just roll over to the republican game and tactics of the their party of racism and hate.

So many of y’all count yourselves as former republicans, but it seems some of those old feelings still permeate your election thoughts. I’ve never voted for a republican in my life so I don’t carry that shame or burden of prior acceptance. Fuck them.
