I have a bunch of these I need to sell in Austin. Any recommendations and what should I expect? Spot price of silver?

Depends on if they are sets and what the mintages are but usually they are anywhere from $200-$350 per coin.  I would take them over to Capital Coin & Bullion on Burnet and talk to Chase or Mel.  You might also want to call into APMEX or SD Bullion and find out how much they will give you too just with them you will have to deal with the hassle of shipping and won't get paid until the shipment arrives and is processed.

Provident Metals offering $123 each for random years.

https://www.providentmetals.com/atb-5-oz-silver-coin.html

Maybe some years go for way more than that for collectors. They charge more for 2012 Hawaii and some others:

Thank you! I stopped by there last Friday, but they were closed for the holiday. After that I stopped in McBride’s but she wasn’t wanting to buy in the volume I have (something about end of year taxes?) and told me to come back in January. I’ll go back to Capital this week and see what they think.

Yeah they always close the week between Christmas and New Year but they were there yesterday as I stocked up on silver dollars.

USGoldBureau.com is selling a $50 Gold Buffalo PROOF coin for $2,085 (if you pay via bank draft) or $2,172 (if you pay by CC).  It's a proof coin, so the premium over spot price is usually about 20%.  For comparison, the actual US Mint website has this coin for $2,940.  USGoldBureau.com is a third-party retailer not associated with the US Mint, but the US Mint sells them proof and collectible sets which they turn around and unload to the public.  They're based in Texas so there's no sales tax on transactions.

I think what's happening is USGoldBureau is using this coin as a loss-leader to generate leads.  After you make the purchase you have to call in to "confirm" your order and they'll probably put a high-pressure sales pitch on you.  Just say no though and you're fine.  I got lucky and the rep didn't give me a pitch at all.

I guess they figure if you've just bought an ounce of gold, you are very receptive to future offers. Or they make their money selling your info to all the gold dealers. These are the leads. The new Glen Gary leads. Mitch and Morty paid good money for these leads.

Doesn't matter. Got gold.

I have bought "too good to be true first time customer deals" from dealers like this before.  They will pester you with phone calls (and snail mail) for a few months afterwards.  It's a minor inconvenience.

I had some guy spamming me that I didn't even buy from. "RD, have you heard what Mike Maloney said today about gold?"

Me: No, but I'm gonna take a guess and say he said to buy more of whatever you sell.

I looked briefly and didn't see anything on this. I like metals just because I think they are fun. Fun to look at. Fun to hold. Just fun to have. My dad got me started, but his reason was "for when the commies take over". I think we all talk about the "security" that owning metals provides, but I never see how that would work. How do you envision using your metals? The girl at the checkout at HEB doesn't give a shit. Of course the HEB would have to actually be open. The gas station attendant, he won't fill my tank for gold or silver. Maybe you could find someone who would trade guns for metal, but you can't eat guns.

Question is, and this is an honest question because I don't know and I would like the education.  What will you try to do with metals...when the commies take over, or the Ruskies, or the Chinese, or the zombies?

I'm not much of a pepper these days. But I think if you read about life under the Siege of Sarajevo and similar shitty situations, a little precious metal was better than nothing. But yeah, the sum total of my silver is just a fraction of a percent of my savings. But it looks pretty.

Hide them, so that I don't get my head chopped off.

Now, if the Commies just took over for a few years, or a Nuevo Pancho Villa rolled through for a while, printing his own money, metal would be nice to have once law and order has been reestablished.

Really, if I were worried about Commie Russian Zombies, I'd have a hand-pumped well and a basement full of pickled vegetables.

I admit to selling 200+ oz of silver yesterday - eagles, philharmonics, Indians, bars and a bag of walking liberties. I took a hit compared to what I paid for it, but it's been on my mind to liquidate part of my silver position and buy something more portable - so I turned around and bought 2 gold maples (their gold price made up for some of the loss I took selling the silver).

I was surprised how nonchalant they were about the whole transaction. They counted the 90% silver, opened up 1 tube, and just trusted what I said was in the other tubes.

I have another batch of eagles, rounds and bars that I’m planning to swap for more gold. But don’t despair, I’m still keeping a few hundred ounces of the white shiny.

Random thought… buying all different forms of silver or gold was fun at the time. but if I could do it again, I’d buy just 1-2 types. All future gold purchase will gold maples (best looking bullion IMO) and sovereigns.

If I had taken the money I spent on PM, and bought the stocks I bought and own, I'd be up over 1,000%. So I probably won't regret selling some PM to buy for more stock.*

costco was selling maples for $2080 last week.  if you used their credit card and got the 4% discount you're paying under spot for it.  i got distracted and didn't remember until it was too late and they were sold out.

What kind of coins are those? Benjamin Franklins?

Looking through my remaining stash, the in the order of good looks, the Libertads take the cake, followed by Fuji Takis, Maples, then Silver Eagles. The Philharmonics are ugly.

Yeah, I love some half-dollars. Dude down the road used to sell them at the same rate as other 90%, and I'd grub up as many as I could. Just a good clunk of a coin, and historically way more common than silver dollars which mostly sat in vaults.

Have a vague late-60s childhood memory of being given a half-dollar that was "special" and "don't spend it," which meant I instantly sprinted with it to Mr. Griffin's store to spend it on candy and comic books. Mr. Griffin scoped it out (I'm guessing it was a Franklin) and held it back for my Mom to redeem with lesser cash, I think she was pissed off that I blew money as fast as I got it.

Whatever coin it was, I was relieved of its ownership. Not sure I ever saw it again.

Fun money ready to use, got a yen for silver. Threw some generic ounces in my cart at an online dealer, then thought maybe I'd just see how much cash I pulled in in a week at a show, spend that locally. Abandoned the cart.

Leaving it that way for a couple days to see if I get one of those legendary Abandoned Cart promotions.

JMBullion is selling a tube of 10oz rounds at spot:

Nice catch. I was planning on buying 8 ounces, but for the price of one more ounce I can get two extra with this deal.

Now we wait while the brass gears turn at my bank to hook up to pay eCheck. Maybe the deal will still be available when I can do that. Maybe it'll be cheaper.

Technically those are bullion rounds, because they aren't legal tender issued by a government (unless I'm wrong.)[I'm wrong. They are Liberian. Thanks @Pimphand]

If you want a Napoleon coin, the man himself had some minted. I was roaming around Youtube at metals stacking in Europe, supposedly every French family has a few of these socked away. "Every" meaning "some," I imagine.

I have a $100 face value bag of Franklins. I'm planning to keep it, maples and libertads. All other silver will be exchanged for gold (or more Apple stock).

At some point the gold silver ratio will catch back up to it's more historical norms but since 1980 gold has definitely been the way better investment.

I have over $1,000 face in half dollars like $350 of it are Franklins, $500 are walkers, and $150 in kennedys technically both coin & bullion but none of them are rare as far as I know.  I'm more into old 90% coins for their fractional silver content and that they were historically already used as legal tender and universally recognied.

In the shit hits the fan need to barter world I will definitely have to tell people "any coin minted before 1965 that is a dime, quarter, or half-dollar were made of 90% silver and each $1 face contains .715 ozt silver on average" but I would imagine that will come in handy at the farmers market.  I fully realize at my age and with my leg you either need to have a skill people need, resources people need, or money to exchange and I definitely fit into that latter camp.

I have some weird silver stuff that I think is cool, and I got at an OK price back when, but it might be a drag on whoever inherits it and doesn't know how to get good money for it. I might simplify, or fuck it, let em figure it out. My wife knows what's what, my son knows not to go to a pawn shop but I think he's decided it's a life-threatening treasure that he'd have to bury to keep safe. As if.

I have introduced him to various dealers, like, "This is where you come."

Yeah the two "Napoleon" coins I have are of Napoleon III not I (both 20 franc pieces 1860 & 1869 respectively)

Anyone understand why the premiums on these are so high? $3 higher than a silver eagle.

Mexico mints FAR fewer Libertads than the US does Eagles.

I would say look around, but the ones I saw locally also had stupid premiums.

I seriously doubt you'd get much of that premium back at sell time.

It's taking forever for my bank to hook up with JMBullion to do eChecks.

It's Nature's Way of telling me I should just go to the art show Friday night, sell with a Glen Garry Glen Ross carnivore edge, then take actual cash money to a real coin store and buy whatever silver I can snatch up in my crusty paws.
