So... 5th round has completed and 3 punters and a kicker have been drafted, but Elliott remains without a team.

Some won't have any sympathy for the kid, but I hate to see a dude like this get bad advice.  If it was a case where he wasn't happy in college or scholastically he was overwhelmed then I get it, but 175 picks in and he's still waiting.

Hope this is your round, kid.

He's stiff and has average speed.  That wasn't going to change.  His value is that he's physical and has a knack for finding the ball.  He's already demonstrated that, so I don't think he was going to improve his stock much by showing it again this year.

Elliott is the Ravens' first safety taken in the draft... which is good.

They have taken 9 picks so far (including Elliott) and have 2 more picks at the end of the 6th (compensatory) and their 7th round pick as well.

Attaboy DeShon.  Now go prove those of us wrong who said you should have  stayed.

I'll be happy if he does, but even more happy when Poona does it as an UDFA.

Or he could have already blown out his knee in Spring Practice and already be looking at life of earning peanuts like the rest of us.

More likely he would have balled out and improved his draft position. A 6th rounder passing on a bowl game is a loss.

The same can happen in training camp on a non guaranteed deal.

And in that case he would be better off at UT with a possible medical redshirt and an education

Even without a guaranteed deal he probably has insurance of some sort that would allow him to finish his education should he get injured. I am not going to argue with anyone in his position thinking the upside of coming back was just too small to justify the risk of coming away with nothing. Jefferson might have been in a position to make like 4 or 5 times the money he is getting now by coming back, balling out, and being a lottery pick. Elliott was probably going to max out at the 3rd round and he probably doesn't even double his money and might not even get a million more per year he is likely getting as a disappointing 6th round pick if he fell to the end of the 3rd round.

Well to be fair they're gonna need to make enough and keep enough for 40-50 years over a career spanning maybe 10.  The long term odds aren't that great.

Enjoy that Cristal and that Benz though.

Then you come back and finish your degree like almost every ex-Horn has - you're being obtuse.

True, but an un drafted free agent needs to actually make the team to see those numbers. The practice squad makes about 90 but that is two years max. If he blows his knee in training camp he gets zero.

Blow knee at UT, medical redshirt and another shot. As for “education” include everything the school and student network can offer their lifetime Longhorns, not just simply a degree, but the network.

Leaving early was a big mistake in this case.

Where are these numbers from?  This is not a sixth round rookie contract.  What is the average NFL career now, under 3 years?

I'm not saying he should or shouldn't have gone, but the numbers have to be accurate.

Spot on analysis. Connor and Mailk should've returned for their Senior seasons, but for Deshon it was now or never.

Elliot will get around $50k signing bonus and $850/week for training camp (2017 #s). He will have to make the team or practice squad to make any more money.   One bad injury away.

I would say the benefits received at UT for a year is close to $50k or more, but he would have the chance to move up to at least the 5th round and get some real guaranteed money and a chance at the team.

He will have to earn it now, without the safety net. Pulling for him, but it’s hard to call his draft result as anything other than a huge mistake on his part.

Medical redshirt year but you are correct about a career ending injury (maybe insurance?)  but true, nothing is guaranteed

He would have been returning as a Thorpe finalist and has another year to get his football “education”.

It is a gamble either way but as of right now he’s got $35k after taxes and the biggest training camp of his life  good luck young man

Safety net is guaranteed money that usually comes from signing bonus and most importantly the multiple opportunities provided to those who a corporation invest $$$ for. Players selected in the 1st 2 rounds have a real advantage in making it.

Injured 1st/2nd rounders are usually not getting cut right away. Injured late rounders or UDFA, flip a coin.

True.

He will probably find out that after paying his agent,   $50k and $850 a week don't go very far. Then if he doesn't make the team gotta go find a job.

Rooting for your own teams players to fail in the NFL is some jilted ex aggy type shit

I don't see anyone saying they hope he fails.

I do see people pointing out reasons staying might have been a better option.

Two different things.

Actually.....

Slot 190 is about 160k signing bonus with 2.6 over 4 years..... Has to make the team though.

He'll walk away with about 90-100k after taxes and paying his agency at a minimum and he's probably going to make the team unless he's terrible in camp which is another 520k for this year before taxes and agency.  In this case, I would have probably recommended he come back and with a solid year, he could have perhaps improved his draft status by let's say 75-90 picks.  The difference between slot 190 and let's say 115 is a signing bonus of about 680k and 3.1 over 4 years, so it's some cheese.  But then you have to account that he's probably taking a year off his shelf life as a pro.  It's not an open and shut case as there are a bunch of possible outcomes including injury and have a down year in college whereby he may not have been drafted at all......He can always come back and finish his degree.

I've always been curious about the phrase "whole slew". What's a "partial slew" look like? Is it the same thing as "a bunch"?

Even if you’re numbers are all wrong still a much better post than simply saying “declaring was monumentally dumb”.  For marginal players it’s a difficult decision whose “best answer” is based on weighing many factors not all of them financial and even the financial ones are subject to numerous uncertainties.
