Good movies that haven't held up.

Saturday Night Fever, which has gotten a lot more social references than it should over the years. I can’t even imagine the “WTF?” expressions on kids faces if they saw it today.

It's because of Lazy disco references that people dismiss Saturday Night Fever.  It's a hella good movie, but it's dark as fuck.  Everyone lumps it in with some of the shity 70s academy nominees, like Towering Inferno, but it's really a pretty great take on being trapped in a working class life.

that last sentence is a fair point. i dunno, for me, the whole thing is about cameron's lack of self-worth and self-esteem. he's home sick because he's depressed, and ferris skips to try and cheer up his depressed friend and pull him out of his shell. ferris is a device, and yes, the shit is over the top and there's no way they could have done all that stuff in a day, but, as you rightly point out, fuck it, it was the 80s.
the scene with the car going out the window i always felt was over the top. i always thought it would be more realistic for him to have to fess up to the mileage, not to the death of the car. that, the father could deal with, i think. but the car being destroyed? meh.
however, the whole point of the movie was for cameron to grow up and to come out from under the covers in his bedroom.

Ferris’ day off was meant to be over the top. That was the whole deal. It’s in the title.

The car being destroyed is an awesome scene. The car having a storyline adds layers to the movie.

Revenge of the Nerds is unwatchable because of the scene where Lewis rapes Betty by pretending to be her boyfriend wearing a mask.  Hell, even the Wikipedia entry states this as "...Lewis, who has fallen in love with Betty, steals Stan's costume and tricks her into having sex with him."  Too cringe worthy now to continue watching.

Lots of laws broken-all sides. Found this on another message board:

Ogre drops a kid off the roof of the AB house. Assault and battery, possibly attempted manslaughter.

-ABs burn their frat house down and then lie to the police over how it started. Arson? Insurance fraud?

-ABs physically throw roughly 100 freshmen out of their dorms, many via the window. Assault and battery, theft by unlawful taking, trespassing.

-Gable fires a brick (Nerds get out) through the Tri-Lams window. Vandalism, destruction of property, harassment.

-Tri-Lams (Booger) get a bunch of people high (including Wormser) on "wonder joints." Illegal possession of a controlled substance, contributing to the deliquency of minors.

-Tri-Lams break into the Pi Delta Pi sorority house and set up video cameras, then sell images of the unsuspecting nude sorority sisters at the Homecoming carnival. Breaking and entering, countless other pornography and theft charges

-Lewis bones Betty Childs while posing as Gable. Rape.

-ABs destroy the Tri-Lams house. Breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, vandalism.

Watched weird science last night. Chet is still hilarious. Forgot that Gary and Wyatt were supposed to be 15 years old in the movie. How times have changed.

Think they were 15 and 16 when they filmed it. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out, monkey dick!

Sorry, Ghandi isn't in the same ballpark with Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge OTRK.

Richard Attenborough is a pretty klunky director.  I like some of A Bridge Too Far (the theme is my favorite war movie theme) but David Lean could develop characters.

The obsequiousness of all of the Ghandi characters was pretty fucking grating.  I wanted to tell Ben Kingsley to wipe that fake smile off of his face the whole movie.

Gary and Wyatt were drinking alcohol in that bar. At 15 years old. I can't support this movie.

Actually it was just Gary.

Whats interesting to me though is that movie could not possibly be made today. 15 year olds drinking and showering with an adult woman? And yet there are hundreds of examples of movies just like it in the 70s and 80s and we thought nothing of it.

Tried watching the original Vacation one time with my teenage kids. Not only did they find it not funny, they were horrified about the dog and aunt dying. Back in 1980 we apparently thought that was hilarious. It was strange seeing it from their perspective.

Agreed. I was thinking the same thing about what they can't make today when I watched 48 Hrs. a few months ago.

I have showed a lot of my favorites to my kids and they just don't see the humor. My son likes the old Mel Brooks movies and the Naked Gun series, but anything made by Hughes just didn't do a lot for them. They just dont understand being a teen in the 80s. Then again, they think SNL is hilarious now, and I think it is weak compared to the old days.

Now get off my lawn...

I tried to rewatch Platoon as well recently.  Oddly enough, the secondary characters hold up really well: McGinley, Keith David, Kevin Dillion, etc. Even Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe hold up despite gobbling scenery like hunger wolves.  But the over the top direction and Charlie Sheen just torpedo the film.   I still argue that the definitive Vietnam movie still hasn't been made.

Scarface is hard to watch.  The plot is nonsensical.

So you’ve never seen Apocalypse Now?

It’s hard for any movie that uses technology as a main theme to hold up. Period pieces obviously will stand the test of time better.

Also movies before 1950 often don’t age well due to the overacting, it’s really stage acting put on film.

Some examples of good/great movies that tech torpedoes:

Goldfinger

Dr No

Ferris Buellers day off

Avatar

1980’s movies that suffer due to the music, fashion and tech.

Scarface

Beverly Hills Cop

Back to the Future

Risky Business

Also the OP said Saving Private Ryan didn’t hold up had a ridiculous plot. SPR is a timeless classic and as far the plot you do know it was based on a true story of the Niland Brothers. Obvious license taken but one brother did get to go home after three or four of his brothers died.

I watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the first time in forever recently.  Maybe I’ve just turned into an old man yelling at clouds, but all I could think about is (a) Ferris is basically a sociopath and (b) how did I never realize what a jerk he is until now?  When I was a kid/teenager it never dawned on me that he wasn’t a hero. I must have been a little shit back then.
No John Hughes movie holds up

Have you watched either recently?  Chariots of Fire is.....slow.  It must have been the sensibilities of the time, but I found the pacing odd.  No pun intended.  White guy playing Gandhi looks wrong today.   My beef with Gone is relative to it's Oscar class.  It's not Forrest Gump vs. 1994 Best Picture nominees, it's just that it had one of the strongest Academy classes of all time, including Wizard of Oz, which probably holds up to time better than virtually any picture ever made.
Kingsley is half Indian, descended from the same area of India as Gandhi

No comedies hold up on their own merits. Bringing up baby is a comedy, 0 laughs in that movie but it's watchable because of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, likewise Ghostbusters is watchable now solely based on the charisma of Bill Murray but theres nothing in that movie that anyone today would find funny. The rest of the garbage comedies from the 80s like Porky's, weird science, mannequin, jumping jack flash,Arthur etc, no one who was born after 1995 has any reason to watch.

I don't agree one bit.  While a movie might be dated funny is still funny.  Lots of great movies from well before the 80's, 50's and 60's that are funny, if you don't get the dialog that's more on you than the movie.

The Philadelphia story has great comedy and its 60 years old.

Uh, Sixteen Candles and Planes Trains and Automobiles most definitely hold up

Most of his flicks hold up.  You  need to take them as what they are, products of their time, and not try to make them in the today.  16 Candles is still funny as shit.

Sixteen Candles and Ferris hold up really, really well.

Movies that aren't well done don't age well.  Great movies age well.

Movies before the 50s - John Ford, Lubitsch, Powell/Pressburger, Rosselini, the best of film noir.

I would say that the stylistics of acting probably have very little to do with how a movie ages well.   A style of acting is just part of a great movie.

There are always exceptions and sixteen candles is one of my favorites. I don’t see how you can watch Buellers and get past the ridiculous computer interface...

For every Casablanca there are fifty where the actors are so campy and over the top it’s hard to enjoy it now

Who cares about the computer interface?  It's about a few kids skipping class.

45 of those 50 movies you are using as examples weren't good to begin with, so not sure why you are using them in a thread about good movies that haven't held up.

Name a good movie that isn't good solely because of the "old timey" acting. To me your either going to name a great movie that many people love or you will pick a movie that has other problems.

My point, and I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, is that acting isn't up to the task because it is bad acting, not because it is "natural" or isn't stylized.

Oh that’s a great no win situation, I give you an example and you simply say it has other problems but not the overacting or outdated tech.

I love Apocalypse Now. It's the antithesis of this thread:  A movie which has aged beautifully.  It was considered a mixed bag upon release.  Now, it's absolutely brilliant.  But it's not the definitive Vietnam movie.  It doesn't try to understand or explore our time in Vietnam, really at any level.   It's just a fucking amazing adaptation of Heart of Darkness.

Risky Business is still awesome.  So dark.

I'll own my fuck up on Ben Kingsley.  I did not know that about his heritage.

Agree on Apocalypse now.....didn't get the movie at all until I read Heart of Darkness in HS and was like whoa.....it was the same thing.

I don't think there will ever be a definitive movie that can capture the Vietnam experience. Someone is going to have to put together a Band of Brothers-esque mini series that might capture the complex nature of the conflict. Is there a definitive WWII movie?

You should stop saying it, and hope no one heard you.    And I don't think golf fashion has changed in like 50 years so it can't be that.

Bullitt. Other than the car chase, the entire movie is so dated that the plot isn't even plausible. An iphone would have ID'd the phony witness from the get go and saved a shitload of footwork. The airport chase never gonna happen with post 9/11 security. The dirty politician still holds up well. That's one thing that will never change.

Not sure if serious, but we can flush Romeo & Juliet, Casablanca and every Seinfeld episode down the drain because the iphone would resolve everything.
