Cali trip was a success:

Catch and release bottles:
- Purple top Willett ($1000)
- 2023 Parker’s Heritage ($1150)
- Elijah Craig 18 ($275)

That Frey Ranch is interesting. 100% wheat whiskey. I’d imagine it’s pretty sweet.

Unsurprisingly, Jack SiBBP Rye smoked Pikesville in a side by side tasting. I wish it had been closer as Pikesville is about $20 cheaper.

I don’t know if $55-65 is in the everyday drinker price range, but I think most of us would be happy as a clam with Four Roses Small Batch Select and the aforementioned Jack Rye.

Hmm…

Sadly I’d put this Frey wheat in the Elmer T Lee category:

Nice. Simple. Unremarkable.

It does have a surprising burn at the back for 100 proof, but nothing else that leaves a lasting impression.

A shame, really… should have grabbed their Barrel SB pick instead, but I’ll be back in a few weeks.

Finally home after a long damn week. Picked up a whiskey called Burning Chair. It was a pick from a mom and pop shop and it said distilled in Indiana. Not bad, but not terribly remarkable. Oak and baking spice and a harsher burn than I expected for 110 proof. Overpriced, but not bad by any means.

I could have sworn I saw the Frey Ranch Wheat at Jack Rose.

I didn’t know what it was, and I didn’t want to check a bag, so I passed.

So what are the theories running around about Bardstown and Dickel? What's the point of even sourcing from Dickel if it only makes up 2% of Discovery 10?

https://www.bardstownbourbon.com/products/discovery-series-10/

The blend from Georgia has to be 13th Colony, right?

They use Dickel in all their collaborative releases.  (Prisoner, Chateau de Laubade, Phifer Pravitt).  No theories.  It's fact.
The Georgia distillate might be ASW.

Ah that would explain their continued partnership.

It was fucking delicious IMO.   I still have about 1/4 of a bottle put away somewhere.

Yeah I don’t understand how anyone disliked this beauty. It’s complex, unique and goes down easy. To me it seemed like the argument against came from a purist’s perspective.

There’s a broad range of brown water that pleases my palette.

How much was she charging for the Woodford?

Not sure. Saw it on Instagram. I wouldn’t suggest charging anything over $160 because Spec’s got a shit ton of it and they’re charging $137 with taxes.

I was confused by the negative reviews on this one, I really like it. I feel like if it was released today it would be much higher on the secondary and better reviewed seeing how popular the finished segment has become. They also put it out at the gift shop all the time, apparently when it wasn’t well received they held a bunch back.

Their SiB Ryes are fucking killer.
The wheat was good, I also have their 100% oat and 100% corn versions.
All solid.
Side note, you can kill someone with their bottles they are so heavy.

Are these bottles available in stores or online only? I've only ever seen this brand on Facebook ads

You can get them straight from the distillery online, they aren't distributed in Texas yet.

Has anybody been the Bowman distillery recently? I know they always have the SiB for sale, but do they ever put the cask strength stuff out?

A year ago was the last time I was there and I doubt their policy has changed. They supposedly don’t drop random bottles… everything allocated is announced and folks like up, first-come first-served.

A Smith days are supposed to be wild… glad I got to drink a bunch before I left the DMV!

Is A Smith Virginia only?

I ordered a bottle of the Frey Ranch Rye.   We’ll see how it is.  I’ve never had alcohol shipped to me in Texas before so there is the novelty factor and I like their story on their website.  So I’m a sucker.
