Roma is usually good, but I have no fucking idea what’s going with ownership/management. They’re all over the place about being open during normal hours and picking up the phone. If it’s a long drive for you, I can send you the owner’s number. Their Sazerac Rye pick is a 9 out 10 rye for me and it’s $34.99. If they have some please let me know because I need to restock.

Ly’s is in EADO. They usually have all of the same picks as NASA and they randomly have allocated Total Wine picks.

NASA is probably the best, but it’s in Clear Lake. If you’re that far south, you might as well go to First Sip.

Liquor Source is in Tanglewood, and it’s usually pretty solid.

Ryan’s in Spring sucks in my opinion, but you should be able to get an Old Forester Barrel Strength pick.

Dandy’s in Katy hypes the shit of their picks so they sell out in a day. I’d call before you head that way.

Rice Liquor is in Bellaire. They usually have 2-3 picks out. I kind of stopped swinging by because they did a few too many Dickel picks for my liking.

Thanks, Bill.  NASA was the place I normally went, but got tired of driving all the way out there and the selection was just MGP.  First Sip appears to be in La Porte.

Rice has been my local go to, but haven't stopped by there much lately.

I think I'll take a drive out to Roma tomorrow.  If I see the Sazerac Rye, i'll let you know.

I need to check out Reserve Wine & Spirits if I'm going out to be out in League City.  Haven't been but a bourbon tuber did a video with the owner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um0R7K4pqC8  Also in the video are Flak's and Space City Liquor.

I don’t know about this one. It’s a little hot, and not a classic wheater like Maker’s or Weller. Sort of leans into the tasting notes I don’t like Heaven Hill’s wheaters. I only bought it because the Whiskey Den podcast wouldn’t stop talking about it. I believe they’re affiliated with some of the DFW Facebook groups. Maybe they caught a good pick?

Different mashbill right? I believe EHT Rye uses a Barton mashbill that’s around 70% rye while Handy is a barely legal at 51%.

What’s the range on secondary?

It’s widely assumed to be 65% rye vs the BT 51% rye mashbill in all of their other rye products. And may not contain any corn (subbing barley for rest). But not confirmed by anyone. It has slightly more rye spice to my palate, but not a huge difference to a Handy.

secondary is $600-ish

Is this the first year for that EHT BP Rye?

Yes. Was originally leaked as a 2022 product, but was shelved.

I got a “you’re getting a 23 next year” talk last year. Haven’t gotten that call yet. Godspeed gents.

Very nice. I guess they like to surprise me. It’s been 7 years, so I have a good idea of my floor/ceiling. My pie in the sky hope is Pappy 15 or ER17.

Casual Saturday grocery store pickup at msrp. No big deal.

That’s easily $2000 in my area, if you can find it. The only one in the antique collection that is higher is the William Lerue at $2500. I’m glad I bought them early in the bourbon craze.

That’s $450 on secondary.
It’s the lowest priced BTAC by far.
And WLW is around $1500.
Where the hell you located?

OK, Bourbon people....

How do you know what's good when you've never had it?

As an example, I picked a regular ol Small Batch 1792 one day and I really liked it. I like it more than Weller Reserve or BT.

But I keep on buying what is supposed to be 'good' when I see it and can get it.

I know tasting is part of the enjoyment,.but I'm willing to bet I'm walking past good stuff every week.

Bozo is going to have fun with his reply.

i don’t think you’re far off. All 3 bourbons you mentioned are distilled by Buffalo Trace and owned by Sazerac. All 3 are about the same quality. I love BT store picks. I can never keep the bottle in stock at my house. It’s a damn fine bourbon for around $30.

Weller Special Reserve really isn’t my thing. Something about it just doesn’t work, but most people love it.

I usually pass on 1792 unless it’s a Full Proof store pick. 12 Year and Sweet Wheat are pretty tricky to find on the shelf.

It sounds like you’re starting on your bourbon journey. It can be exciting figuring what you like and what you don’t. A lot of people in this thread will you tell you age statements are bullshit, but I think they’re helpful when you’re getting started. Especially with ryes. I usually like ryes that 6 years old or older. I’m a little more open minded with bourbons, but I won’t drink anything younger than 4 years. I really don’t care about proof. If it tastes good it tastes good, but usually uncut and unfiltered tastes better.

Some cheaper stuff I’m drinking right now are : Sazerac Rye store picks, Evan Williams SiB, Bowman Small Batch, and Benchmark Bonded.

Bottled in bond is helpful. I won’t go through all the rules, but basically it’s at least a 4 years old, 100 proof, produced at the same distillery during the same season, and stored in a federally bonded warehouse. There’s no cheating, so it’s usually a good product.

Also look on the back of the bottle to see where it was distilled. There are some rare expectations, but I won’t buy it if it doesn’t say distilled in Kentucky, Indiana, or Jack Daniel’s on the back. Bowman is distilled in Virginia. It’s outstanding, but they’re wholly owned by BT.

I wouldn’t use the Youtube experts’ reviews to influence your decisions. It’s infotainment, and lot of them are pay for play. Word of mouth is usually much better. If I have time I’ll try to find a pour at a bar before I buy something new.

Price is always tricky. This is America, it’s worth whatever you’re willing to pay for it. The new rule seems to $10-15 per year in the barrel. Your Indiana products, MGP, tend to be more expensive because they’re a contract distiller. Still a terrific product, but they’re not as integrated and don’t have the scale of a BT or Heaven Hill.

Things I wish people told me when I got started:

- BT and Heaven Hill are the best distillers and it’s not really close. There’s a reason they’re so popular, profitable, and have been in business so long. Jack Daniel’s has recently entered the circle of trust with barrel proof picks and special releases.

- Be real careful with Jim Beam products. Almost everything with JB on the label is going to taste like peanuts. Booker’s is overpriced now, and the Knob Creek picks are probably never coming back.

- The Wild Turkey special releases aren’t worth the money except for Russell’s 13 and 15. Save your money.

- Most of the big cities in Texas have bourbon socials at least once a year. It can be a shit show, but it’s a good opportunity to try a lot of different bourbons to determine what you like. Also a great chance to try dusties, BTAC, and Pappy.

- I wouldn’t recommend ever buying Dickel unless you need to clean your deck.

How is this year's version?  My local place has some at $220, I think.  I've held off so far but might grab one if it's still there next time I visit.

Jesus my tasting notes. Maybe like flat apricots? Good nose, decent palette, no finish. I’d pass unless you think they’re throwing in some sweeteners.

again, axiomatically -

1) People don’t want to pay for bourbon. They want to pay for bourbon they can’t find.
2) The best bourbon is often hard to get, but the hardest bourbon to get us not usually the best.
3) All good blends are better than all but the best single barrels, and only the absolute best individual barrels are better than the best blends.
4) There’s plenty of good bourbon.
5) Until somebody drinks it, it isn’t any good.

I’ve got good taste. Bill has good taste. We don’t always like the same things or agree about what’s important. Both perspectives are valid and there’s no “right” answer about age or distillery or distilling method or anything else. The five things above are the full sum total of what I know to be true about bourbon, but beyond that it’s all preference.

So- drink what you like, and try to build a vocabulary to describe it, and an understanding of what contributes to those things. That will take you where you need to go.
Don’t chase bottles simply because they are in high demand unless that’s fun for you, and don’t overpay unless you enjoy the flex.

There’s never been more good bourbon than there is today. Enjoy.

Find you a good bourbon bar and get some single pours. I’ve done that several times and eliminated some bottles I had on the purchase list.

Out of curiosity, what's the secondary on RHF?

250
Haven’t seen EHT SiB on the shelf at or near msrp in years. Walk into two different shops in Colorado and find that, Bowman SiB, Hancock’s, a pallet of BT and two different JD BP picks.

Well you’re winning at life.
