Kendall Rogers on A&M and LSU coaching searches

Spoiler

• If you’re looking for clarity on the LSU coaching search right now, you’re out of luck, at least for a while. LSU is about to compete in the Eugene Regional, and some of the Tigers’ other candidates also are playing this weekend. Let’s cut to the chase, the target in this one still 100 percent appears to be Florida long-time head coach Kevin O’Sullivan. Sources tell D1Baseball there is serious, mutual interest between the two parties, but both the Gators and Tigers could be playing for a while in the postseason, so we’re not going to find out anything for certain until that point. If not O’Sullivan, East Carolina’s Cliff Godwin is in the mix, and perhaps the Tigers will choose to reach out to Ole Miss skipper and former LSU catcher Mike Bianco. Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello is another candidate to watch, but frankly, there just hasn’t been much buzz in Baton Rouge about his potential candidacy, and that might mean their sights are set elsewhere. Overall, after reeling in Jimbo Fisher at A&M and Kim Mulkey at LSU, never underestimate Scott Woodward’s ability to bring in the ultimate splash hire. For now, the attention is on O’Sullivan. but don’t put it past Woodward to have a surprise fish on the line.

• Texas A&M parted ways with long-time head coach Rob Childress a couple of weeks ago, and the Aggies are already well into their coaching search. We listed the candidates for this job as TCU’s Jim Schlossnagle, Tennessee’s Tony Vitello, and East Carolina’s Cliff Godwin when our original candidate's list came out, and nothing has changed on that front. With all three coaches playing in the postseason, the Aggies will tap the brakes on their coaching search for the next week or so. But the smart money, for now, is on Schlossnagle, who has had a great deal of success at TCU, but who also has coveted SEC jobs, hence his flirtation with the Mississippi State job a couple of seasons ago. It’s looking more and more like Vitello will stay put at Tennessee this summer, while Schlossnagle could be making a short drive down Highway 6.

Hope aggy Kendall is just spreading aggy propaganda.     Need to keep Schlossnagle in the B12.     He did not "flirt" with Miss St,  they aggressively pursued him.

TCU is a short drive up highway 6 from aggy?

I've been saying this but Schloss to A&M and Saarloos promoted to head coach at TCU is perfect for Texas.

It breaks up Schloss and Saarloos at TCU which is good news for Texas. Schloss at A&M will not go nearly as well as some people think it will without Saarloos. Saarloos has been their stud recruiter and the key behind their elite pitching (outside of this year).

Schloss at TCU before Saarloos was Rob Childress 2.0.

He also hired Tony Vitello, he is good at finding assistants. Vitello was there from 2011-2013 and recruited a lot of the guys that were apart of their 4 straight CWS appearances from 2014-2017

Schloss is definitely a good coach and I'm sure he will find good assistants. Just think it's going to be very difficult to replace Saarloos.

Saarloos is arguably the top pitching coach in the country. In the last 10 seasons as a pitching coach, Saarloos has produced a top 25 pitching staff in team ERA 8 times. It's kind of incredible that TCU has been able to keep Saarloos as an assistant this long.

Doesn't always equate to being a good head coach... see Johnson, Skip.

Schloss has been going through a lot of  personal issues here in Fort Worth.  Maybe he wants a fresh start.  Why it would be the Aggies, God only knows.

TCU forum opines to remain close to his children.     Remember seeing him play catch with his son at the Disch before the games at the '10 SR.    Tough situation for him.

Also said he left Lupton yesterday very quickly without speaking to anyone - including player's parents who always gather nearby after games.

No idea.  Schloss will want to take him, I'm sure, and I'd think he'd be a top candidate to take over.

If that pair gets separated I think it is win-win from our perspective. Both A&M and TCU will be less than what they could be.

Biggest job market in maybe ever?  ASU, LSU, aggy, Fullerton, and Rice open so far.

Wow, and four of those are actually top-tier jobs for schools that have won baseball championships!

Guest Lobo

Yeah, let's see about Omaha:

Rice-7 appearances, 1 title

CSU: Fullerton-18 appearances, 4 titles

LSU-18 appearances, 6 titles

ASU-21 appearances, 5 titles

A&M-6 appearances, 0 titles

Fucking garbage program.  We're all dead tired pretending they mean anything to anybody but themselves.  Nobody cares, Aggies.  Nobody cares.

aggy will outspend every one of those programs for a new coach.  They'll pay more than a couple of them combined.

If aggy paid $3 million for a coach that hasn't been out of a regional since '17 good lord they're dumb.

If you're going to pay that type money go get somebody like O'Sullivan that actually has skins on the wall.

Schlossnagle most definitely has skins on the wall, no guy is worth $3 million a year and I don’t know where that number is being rumored. Guy inherited a TCU program that was lifeless and had only gotten into the tournament 2 times in their history, proceeded to take them to Omaha 5 times and compile an 11-10 record at the CWS.

Schloss is a good coach but he's not in the same league as O'Sullivan.

1 national title, 7 CWS appearances, 4 semi CWS appearances, and O'Sullivan is the much better recruiter. O'Sullivan didn't take over a great situation at Florida either.

If you're going to pay top dollar for a coach get somebody like O'Sullivan that is clearly looking around.

Not in the same league is debatable because they weren’t exactly handed the same deck. Would you rather take over a program that had only been to the NCAA tournament twice in their history or a program that had been to the CWS 5 times and 2 years removed from a runner-up finish? They are both great coaches and what Schlossnagle has done at TCU is just as impressive IMO as what O’Sullivan has done at Florida.

That would be like penalizing Wayne Graham had he not won it all at Rice. He did end up winning it all which is why most consider him an all time great but most wouldn’t think any less of him had he not won it.

EDIT: You could go into a lab and recreate 40 year old Augie Garrido and he wouldn’t be worth $3 million, if they give someone that they are dumb as hell

Nobody would think any less of Wayne Graham but they certainly wouldn't take him over coaches with more skins on the wall. Same with O'Sullivan.

I'm interested to see how Schloss does at A&M because I don't think it's going to go nearly as well as you think it is (especially without Saarloos).

Don't you know that in the collective aggy mind, paying a lot means the coach is worth a lot and makes the hire a 'splash hire'?
