The roster that Herman left for 2021- too few OL, too many WR (with too few that could play), not a single LB that knew how to play the position. For once, Texas got ahead of the collapse.

IMHO, Tom Herman's Waterloo would have been in 2021 with a depleted roster mainly due to poor line recruiting. Kudos to Chris Del Conte for being out in front of the situatio.  As a side note, could you just imagine how back the program would have been if he was retained for the 1998 season? Or how bad it would have been if Mack stayed for the 2014 season?

That’s not just a “calm down” grab, it’s grabbing and pinching his skin like he’s a fucking child. I bet she’s abusive as fuck and that’s why Herman took pleasure in playing mind games with the team.

That's literally what I do with my dogs when I want them to calm down and quit focusing on bullshit.

What? Seriously?

If Mack stays for 2014, that means the worst coach in Texas football history would not have come to the 40 acres! Some other university would have rolled the dice on that Bone Headed Ignoramus, Coach Potato's demise would have happened elsewhere, and we would not have been subjected to years of the worst Texas football on a week by week basis.

The Coach Potato PTSD still flows strongly within me.

I'd argue there wouldn't be much difference between 2014 Mack and 2014 Charlie Strong.

I’d bet Rocko’s paycheck Mack has never kicked off in both halves of a game, ever.

That's truly an extremely high bar of coaching stupidity. It's really next level.. it's beyond not knowing your starting QBs name.

Which is very bad...

Maybe not.  Mack would've still had Tryone Swoopes as QB1, but I can't believe Major as OC would've been as bad as Shawn fucking Watson.  Greg Robinson would've still been a solid DC, but he was a one-year stop gap after Manny got shitcanned, so Mack would've had to hire a replacement.

Maybe Mack's game/clock management would've eked out another win or so.  Who knows.

I honestly can't remember if Heard was at Texas then or not... but Swoopes was a nice person but I never understood starting him over Heard.

I think it did happen one under Mack.

He said it was a mistake on the player's part who was probably confused and/or caught in the moment.

Anyone else remember something like this?

Here are some of my favorite stats.

The final two games of 2013.  We scored 17 points.  7 of those on an 11 yard drive that took 7 plays.  An 8 yard penalty on 4th allowed the drive to continue.

In those two games, we had approximately 100 yards passing.  In each of those two games, Baylor and Oregon had more interception return yards than we had passing yards.  Go find me another time in history in which that has occurred.  And, oh by the way, they had 2 pick sixes.  So our offense if you attribute that 11 yard drive to them scored 17 and gave up 14 over those two games.

And we had an NFL RB and a veteran Oline.  I’d guess upward of 100 combined starts entering the season, which was significant back then.

Mack wasn’t going to do shit.  Think it was the very next year that in game 2 or 3 or whatever after Dominic Espinosa went down that we had fewer Oline starts than had the Oline simply gotten 5 each game up to that point.

You were getting sketchy football no matter what.

Yes, we were getting sketchy football but seriously...

Are you trying to say that using practically every statistical analysis, the WORST coach in Texas football history is the same as again, statistically, the second best coach in Texas football history?  Even burnt out Mack is light years ahead of that brain dead potted plant who did nothing but dig our grave deeper.

Mack needed to go.  We were closer to the 2010 5-7 team than we were to the 2008/09 teams.  And those teams already had lesser talent offensively than 5 years prior.

Mack left Swoopes for the QB room.  He didn’t leave shit at the Oline.  There was good talent on D, but much of it was upperclassmen that had 1 or maybe 2 years left.

There was a certain purging that needed done.

Whatever you want to say about Strong, he recruited Conner Williams.  The first drafted olinemen since the 2004 recruiting class.  That’s a problem.  That was a Mack problem.  Like Beuchele or not, he was good enough to hit the NFL.  Sam too.  While I like Swoopes, a 1-9 record leading his high school is not necessarily leaving the cupboard full.  That was a Mack problem.

There was a decent dose of talent that Strong left.  So, no, the program was not worse.

Yeah, I suppose Mack could have scrapped together some 7-5s.  Yeah for us.  I would suspect that Mack had he dragged out 3 more years would not have left NFL talent at as many positions for the next guy.  That next guy may have stuck around longer had he not rubbed everyone the wrong way.

In a sense, the evolution since that time has led us to our current position, which has considerable upside.  Even in retrospect, you change that trajectory, and it’s likely Seven Win Steve is elsewhere and we have someone less suited for this current run.

Thought it was Arkansas. When it happened, I was kind of shocked. Didn’t know it was a thing.

I was just coming here to post this game because I know for a fact Mack did kickoff to start both halves against Arkansas in the 2004 season.

IIRC, Mack's explanation was if we won the toss, we were going to defer, but our guy said kick off, which gave the Hogs the ball to start the game and the option in the 2nd half.

You’d be wrong. Pretty sure he did it while Derrick Johnson was there

If Derrick Johnson made that call, I’ll let that pass as his total badassness outweighs such a mistake.  DJ needs to come back to campus and teach the defense the art of punching a ball out to cause a fumble.
