i read this book and remember everyone went gaga for it.  i didn't love it.  it seemed very cliched man porn.  i had read maybe three or four clancy books before this, but it was the one that really made me realize he'd left the red october sort of espionage behind and just decided to make money writing stallone-like bits.

hope the movie is more enjoyable.

Book fan here. That’s not even an update of the story. That looks like it has nothing in common with the story apart from the character’s name and service.

Yeah I will watch that but it looks nothing like the book (which I thought was great)

And I love to see Wallace doing good. Fuck David Simon

Yeah, that’s a shame.

In the name a book you would like to see made into a movie I said this book, but barebones and not a star vehicle.  I had no idea this was in production, this looks the exact opposite of that.

Holy shit. I remember when this was being kicked about in the early 90s.

I remember when it was being kicked around with a young Keanu Reeves as Kelly.  I thought Willem Dafoe was a perfect John Clark, but was cool with Reeves playing a younger version.

This is going to be an extremely lightweight version of the book from the looks of things, and is "John Wick + a little Tom Clancy".

I would much rather have preferred they just give us a Taylor Sheridan/Michael B Jordan espionage thriller (inspired by Bourne/John Wick/etc.) as a standalone series (without the Tom Clancy association), and took John Hoogenakker's character "Matice" from the Jack Ryan series, and said "oh yeah, his names actually John Clark, and here's a spinoff series!"

Because honestly, at this point in time, a Taylor Sheridan/Michael B Jordan teamup has a bigger draw than "BASED ON TOM CLANCY'S BESTSELLING BOOKS", and I really think they did Matice and his actor wrong in Jack Ryan.

I'm just holding out hope for a Red Storm Rising HBO Max series.

We just finished an expensive and massive World War II alternate history series on Amazon.

We are in season two of an expensive and massive 1960s/1970s alternate history series on Apple TV (that just went into the 1980s).

Both are popular, and those are just two examples.

That's not exactly true imo. Executive Orders, Debt of Honor and Rainbow 6 all came after Without Remorse, and those are a few of my favorites. Your point definitely applies to the "ghost writer" continuation of the series though.

Lee Child has made a fortune off this very thing.

Those books make me feel like he’s insulting my intelligence. And perpetual inclusion of baseball references because of course Americans like that. And yet, I read like 15 of the damn things

Michael B Jordan can't act for shit but I'll watch any way.

Agreed. I’ve never seen him as any character he’s played. He’s just himself in every role and the worst part of any movie I’ve seen him in. But I’ll also watch any way.

I don't remember Reeves being connected to it.  I do remember Gary Sinise being tabbed for the Kelly role at one point. He doesn't have the physical stature, but I think he could have nailed the character.

That trailer is definitely not the story and the character doesn't reflect who Kelly is in the movies.  Oh, well.  Will probably watch it anyway.

Same. I've found myself talking out loud about how Reacher should just mind his own business sometimes. Yet, I'll stay up all night to finish the book. The heart want what the heart wants.

The heart doesn't want his fucking brother to write another one.  Last one sucked.

Tom Hardy would have made a good Clark.

Wrong guy from Platoon. Tom Berenger would have been a perfect John Clark. Dafoe was too wild-eyed crazy for the part. Clark is a quiet, stoic character.

Hell yeah.

That was my favorite Clancy novel and would make an excellent series if they remained true to the book. Keep it set in the Cold War as a period piece like the Americans. Do not rewrite it with Jim from the Office prancing around South America. In fact, keep Halpert away from the series. Just use some CGI time reversal voodoo on Harrison Ford.

Give it to the people who did FX's The Americans.

Prime should do a Cardinal of the Kremlin limited series.

This thread inspired me to pick up a copy of this when we were at Half Price Books on Saturday. Not sure why I never got around to this one as I got through most of the Jack Ryan series up to The Bear and the Dragon. Couple chapters in and enjoying it so far.

Good choice. A lot of spycraft set in Cold War era Moscow, definitely a enjoyable read.

I read many of these Clancy books eons ago. Without Remorse was bad ass at the time but I can see the quibbles with it now. I think Clancy finally lost me with Sum of All Fears. Isn't that the one where they set off a nuke at the Super Bowl? It wasn't a bad book but sheesh, he'd spend dozens and dozens of pages at a time describing the process the guy was using to fabricate the nuke. Boooooooring!!!

If you enjoyed Red Storm Rising, some of you may enjoy Team Yankee by Harold Coyle.

And if you like those, check out Sir John Hackett's books, "The Third World War" or something along those lines.  Very detailed analysis of what it would have been like.

What’s the amazon series?

"The Man in the High Castle" based on the novel by Philip K. Dick.

First two seasons are amazing.  But stick with it through all four, it ends well.

I guess maybe I’m overly dense- what’s the name of said series?

Sorry, Lobo answered, it was one of those things that I was surprised was actually made, and then made with a massive budget, and went for multiple seasons.

If you missed Debt Of Honor, that's your loss. He foretold 9/11 with the ending of that book.

Jack becomes POTUS in that one, yes?
