My point is that 25% of the people killed in the attack weren't Asians.  Pam posted just prior that he only killed Asians. The is not correct.  You seem to know a lot about this particular event yet didn't know there were victims that weren't Asian so I posted the facts.

Edit: to add, I changed the link from my original post because the second link had pictures.  The one white lady that was killed had an Asian last name.

i think it was clear that he was targeting asian women. let's be clear here. you say that 25% of the people weren't asians. i say that 75% of the women killed were asian women. that's a pretty significant fact. people getting caught up in the crossfire also deserve recognition, i agree.

it just seems that you are awfully caught up on making that distinction, and i'm curious as to why. is it your rabid dedication to facts?

Well, the guy told everyone why he did it.  He has said it wasn't racially motivated.  He was heading to one of the "porn" stores in Florida when he was arrested according to the NY Times.  I don't think there is anything particularly Asian about those porn stores.  Now, I will fully admit that I have not read the killers bio.  I have no idea if he hated Asians.  A quick google search didn't show anything.  All I see is that even though he said they were killed because they were Asians, that "While police say the gunman in the killings denied that they were race-motivated and instead said he was attempting to eliminate sexual "temptation," experts and advocates say the killings cannot be divorced from the way racism and sexism intersect, and the oversexualization and fetitization of Asian women."

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/the-atlanta-spa-shootings-and-the-year-of-hatred-against-asian-americans/ar-BB1eLAhL

So we have the actual killer saying that racism was not the motivation behind this, but everyone else saying it is.  Why?  Now, do I believe that Asian Americans face racism?  Of course they do.  I don't condone or support it.  It's stupid that people cannot separate the actions of the Chinese government from the people.

Somebody legal help me out:

so if what shooter says is true and it wasn’t racist in it if itself but because of external factors, like hypothetically, lack of security or maybe he felt his personal accessibility was easier at these type of establishments versus other sexually oriented businesses, dosent the fact that these establishments are predominantly Asian still apply as “hate crime”?

Well guys, the shooter and the former blackwater, racist t-shirt selling cop both said it wasn't race motivated. Case closed!

Move along boys, didn't you hear about all the violence in chicago?

Talk about that instead of this white religious extremist shooting asian women in the head!

I don’t know. Why would he lie? So he is only viewed as a murderer rather than a racist murderer? So he doesn’t get charged with a hate crime?

Yes that is exactly why he would lie about and why he in fact did lie about it.

Or maybe he went to an Asian massage joint to try to kill whitey, figuring they would be the customers and the Asians were the collateral damage.

Dude was obviously targeting Asians. It’s a mystery to me why anyone would try to deny that but I guess the outrage machine needs its fuel.

Most racists don’t think they’re racists..

This is very true. Maybe everyone has their own definition of racist, and thus when the term is thrown around, people are thinking you are accusing them of something far worse, without knowing what they’re doing is still bad. For example, the baby boomer generation could think racists lynch black people and don’t let them eat at the same restaurant, because that’s what their parents generation did. So if you call them a racist for things like limiting their voting rights or gerrymandering, they don’t believe you, that’s not the definition or reality they grew up with.

Most people in this thread are dipshits. You have one group taking this stuff and saying "omg this obviously means we have massive amounts of anti-asian sentiment and hate in this country. Asians are being murdered by the truckload!" No, dipshits, they aren't.

Then you have another group saying "well how do we KNOW this guy was targeting Asians? It could just be a sex worker thing!" No, dipshits, it isn't. This guy had a history of saying negative things about Asians and only killed Asian people. Do the fucking math.

I'm so fucking tired of these stories getting covered in a way that just makes everyone extrapolate the details of whatever happened to fit their worldview. Some things are just bullshit topics to begin with.

I know this makes me a bad person but these are my favorite types of posts on this website.

When a self righteous and obviously self unaware poster scolds other posters for playing fast and loose with the facts and then plays fast and loose with the facts.  Unintentional irony is always the funniest irony.

I’ll just reply to this post but it is targeted toward all of the other usual suspects that have the same rhetoric.

Posts like these are the reason why the vast majority of educated people think that you are idiots. You jump to conclusions based on little or no facts and then, simultaneously, scold other people for jumping to conclusions opposite of yours with little or no facts.  You are so blinded by your preconceived notions and ideologies that you literally have become the people that you chastise.

The murderer in question spent many months in 2019/2020 in a sex addiction rehab facility.  We can debate the whys and why not in another thread but it is an absolute fact that the overwhelming majority of massage parlors that offer sexual favors are employed by Asians.  This in no way blames the massage parlor employees. It is simply a fact that if you are a sex addict and you need an easy fix then an Asian massage parlor is a fairly inexpensive and relatively safe way to get that fix.  The murderer admitted that he visited these places multiple times and received sexual favors before he committed the murders. There is absolutely nothing in his past, his statements to police, the statements of his former roommate or anyone else that suggest that he was targeting agents. If the vast majority of massage parlors that offered sexual favors were employed by some other race, then that race would have been the ones that he killed because those would have been the people that he received sexual favors from. The dude was obviously mentally unstable.

Sex addiction is usually such bullshit whenever you hear it. And I say that as a religious Christian person, most of the time when you hear Christians talk about it, what they really mean is “I really like and engage in sex/porn/masturbating/ but I also think I shouldn’t and feel bad about it.” Or “I didn’t really want to cheat on my wife now that its over and she found out, but the other woman was so hot. And that reasoning won’t fend off a trip to the lawyer but maybe addiction will.”

The place this guy went is a ministry and not a medical facility. There aren’t any physicians on staff. They probably can help dudes not cheat on their wives by offering structure, prayer, and accountability. And that’s cool but it’s not treating clinical addiction.

Ironically, he almost certainly did need profession treatment given that by his own testimony he shot 8 people to “eliminate temptation”.  “Sex addiction” was almost certainly not his mental problem.

I’m going to need to see your work on this fact. It’s probably true.

I know it may be hard to understand, but it is possible, that since he thought it was okay to go kill a bunch of non-whites, that in itself was actually racist. Asians women are stereotyped as “submissive” and “sexual” because of a long history from Vietnam to movies, etc.

I really don't understand this intense need of certain posters to limit this discussion. There are basically only two possible motives (or a combination of the two) for his actions: sex and race. I absolutely agree that the race could be incidental and that sexual frustration/anger was his prime motivator. But, given the facts, there is quite a bit of evidence that race is a contributing factor. Why are we requiring absolutely certainly that the crimes were racially motivated before allowing discussion? It is just strange. Anyone definitively dismissing or accepting race as a motive is talking out of his/her ass.

I really don't give a fuck why this little shit did it so long as he gets put on ice for life.

I also don't give a shit that the cop appeared to be overly empathetic, so long as this little shit gets put away for life.

And I didn't give much of a shit that "OMG OMG the cops took Dylann Roof out for Burger King!1!!11" because that little shit is working on the first of nine stacked life sentences. (And that wasn't what happened, anyway. No matter how heinous your crime, the cops are obliged to feed you.)

Whether he was motivated by racism or misogyny is immaterial to me. In either case, we will wring our hands and have yet another fucking "national dialogue on X-ism" and absolutely nothing of importance will come from it, so I will just take what comfort I can from knowing this fuck will die in a PITA prison.

Mass killers...not serial.

He did drive to multiple locations, so the killings were technically serial, just over a shorter amount of time. I'm not sure what the strict definition of serial killer really is. But, I agree, mass killer seems to be the better fit given the popular image of a serial killer.

Actually, here is an interesting discussion from the FBI: https://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/serial-murder

Quote

In the past thirty years, multiple definitions of serial murder have been used by law enforcement, clinicians, academia, and researchers. While these definitions do share several common themes, they differ on specific requirements, such as the number of murders involved, the types of motivation, and the temporal aspects of the murders. To address these discrepancies, attendees at the Serial Murder Symposium examined the variations in order to develop a single definition for serial murder.

Previous definitions of serial murder specified a certain number of murders, varying from two to ten victims. This quantitative requirement distinguished a serial murder from other categories of murder (i.e. single, double, or triple murder).

Most of the definitions also required a period of time between the murders. This break-in-time was necessary to distinguish between a mass murder and a serial murder. Serial murder required a temporal separation between the different murders, which was described as: separate occasions, cooling-off period, and emotional cooling-off period.

Generally, mass murder was described as a number of murders (four or more) occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involved a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident (e.g. the 1984 San Ysidro McDonalds incident in San Diego, California; the 1991 Luby’s Restaurant massacre in Killeen, Texas; and the 2007 Virginia Tech murders in Blacksburg, Virginia).

There has been at least one attempt to formalize a definition of serial murder through legislation. In 1998, a federal law was passed by the United States Congress, titled: Protection of Children from Sexual Predator Act of 1998 (Title 18, United States Code, Chapter 51, and Section 1111). This law includes a definition of serial killings:

The term ‘serial killings’ means a series of three or more killings, not less than one of which was committed within the United States, having common characteristics such as to suggest the reasonable possibility that the crimes were committed by the same actor or actors.

Here is the definition the article ended up with: "Serial Murder: The unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events".

So, serial killer may actually fit better than mass murder given the multiple locations.

There was not enough time between the killings for it to be serial killer. The perpetrator was a spree killer.

Quote

A spree killer is someone who kills two or more victims over a short period of time without a cooling-off period. Spree killers don't resume their normal lives in between killings like serial killers do, according to Psychology Today.

The maximum duration between murders in spree killing is generally considered to be seven days. Serial killers, on the other hand, may cool off for weeks, months and, in rare instances, even years between murders,” the magazine reported.

The lack of a cooling-off period is the difference between a spree killer and a serial killer, the FBI said.

A mass murder is defined as the killing of a large number of people, usually in one place, like the attack in Las Vegas earlier this month when 58 people were shot to death from a window of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

I mean I guess if it works for you, roll with it. The people who wrote letters to CDC that got published probably don't think they're racist either. But it certainly shows a predisposition to being sensitive towards accusations of racism when you give the benefit of the doubt to a guy who specifically targeted Asian businesses and the only evidence we have that it WASN'T racially motivated was taking his word for it.

Nope. I don't really care that much about this story. It's just pretty eye-opening, albeit not surprising, to see some of you spending more time worried about a mass murderer being unfairly called a racist than the huge number of people he killed.

In my experience most racists associate with other racists, his buddies saying he was a great guy doesn't mean anything.

It’s bullshit to blame politicians for inciting racism when this shit had nothing to do with race.

There has been an increase in violence against Asians.  Especially on the coasts.  It isn’t Trumpers doing it though.

We should have an honest discussion about interracial violence. But the left and the media really aren’t interested in that because it won’t advance their agenda.

Would you have believed him if he had said he killed them because they were Asian?

Why? Because he said "I'm not a racist"?

I mean I guess if it works for you, roll with it. The people who wrote letters to CDC that got published probably don't think they're racist either. But it certainly shows a predisposition to being sensitive towards accusations of racism when you give the benefit of the doubt to a guy who specifically targeted Asian businesses and the only evidence we have that it WASN'T racially motivated was taking his word for it.

They can't find any evidence to support this was a racist attack.  At any rate, can they just go ahead a put him out of his misery?
