Celebrities who dabbled in music

Number of dead links so don't know if these were posted before:

Joe Keery (DJO) of Stranger Things, Free Guy, etc sings:

Andrew Garfield (actor) from The Amazing Spider-Man, Hacksaw Ridge, etc sang quite a few songs in Tick Tick Boom, the Lin Manuel Miranda film about Jonathan Larson. I don't know that I'd call him a musician, but AFAIK, he had little to know musical background prior to the role. Ryan Gosling, however, actually was in a band or two long before he sang the Ken song at the Oscars. Eddie Redmayne had a choral background that earned him scholarships to uni, but I don't know that he composes. He was in the Les Mis film with Crowe.

Bullneck has some thoughts.  It's not horribad.  Looks like she's on the ferry to Martha's Vineyard.  Reminds me of this:

It's cool enough I made it's own thread but

Quote

During the filming of Fire Down Below, filmed in Trinidad and Tobago with Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth, Mitchum embraced the Afro-Caribbean music scene and was regularly seen hanging out with local musicians and singing in their distinctive style. Locals complimented him on the natural inflections in his voice and his ability to mimic the sounds of local calypso.

Back in Hollywood, Mitchum recounted the music he grew to adore on the islands to Johnny Mercer, the founder of Capitol Records, who had been trying to make something happen with Mitchum for some time. Harry Belafonte’s ‘Calypso’ album had been a huge hit the year before (it held the number one for 31 weeks and it was the first LP album to sell a million copies).

Mitchum went back into the recording studio to record one of the most surreal Hollywood/music crossovers of all time. The resulting album, released in 1957, was called ‘Calypso – is like so…. ‘ The front cover is a striking image of Mitchum in a technicolour beach bar, drinking Jamaican rum with a dusky beauty by his side.

I love this album. It’s fascinating that a huge Hollywood star like Mitchum, was able to release a Calypso record. At the time, Mitchum was praised for his authentic Caribbean accent, which isn’t terrible, but it’s surreal listening to the album in 2020, knowing that this is a white guy singing black folk and reggae songs.

‘Jean and Dinah’ and ‘Coconut Water’ are really catchy tunes that were quickly added to my holiday playlist. Mitchum also offers love lessons in ‘From A Logical Point of View,’ singing “If you want to be happy, living a King’s life, never make a pretty woman your wife.” And he pontificates on the state of the youth of the day in ‘What Is This Generation Coming To?’ as he warbles “all the parents say their children will grow up delinquents” because they’re listening to Elvis Presley and Harry Belafonte.

Last month my wife and I were traveling (she surprised me with flights and tickets to the Peach Bowl), and we had a few hours to kill before we were meeting some friends for dinner.  So we looked up movies nearby and ended up going to see the Dylan movie... it was pretty "meh."

1.  My wife kept leaning over and whispering, "He (Chalamet) has zero charisma" (she was right).

2.  The moments when Chalamet tried to be the most Dylanish Dylan - delivering something sneering and defiant - those were just cringeworthy and painful to watch.

3.  Joan Baez's ass should have gotten a Best Supporting Actress nomination.  I may have whispered this to my wife (I was right).

Anyway, I thought that whole crash-and-burn failure of a creative endeavor was over and behind me.... but this evening I was fast forwarding through last week's SNL because I wanted to see the news.  I paused while fast forwarding, because "Oh, I wonder who the musical guest is."

"... Timothee Chalamet!"

And I was treated to yet another helping of this guy doing a third-rate Dylan impression.  I truly wondered if it was "for real."  Like, is this supposed to be good?  Or is it a bit?

Anyway, I said this about Bon Jovi doing his pandemic song on Colbert a few years ago, and I'm saying it again now, "You are killing what very little is left of rock music."

This song is beautiful, but I can't listen to it because it causes me to become depressed for some reason.  But Charlotte Gainsbourg is famous (model) in France.  Anyway . . .

I didn’t hate the movie but you are right on about Joan Baez’s can.

Guessing the real Joan Baez maybe wasn’t as lucky.

Played Emo's last night. I suppose this could have also gone in the "live music you are seeing" thread.

Steven Seagal was in the news this week, and it reminded me of this thread. I see that he's already made an appearance on this page, but since I'm here, I'm gonna post this anyway:

He was on American Idol years ago. I listen to him on the Armchair Expert Podcast recently, seems like a pretty cool dude and was very open about his struggles.

Since all the video links in this thread are hosed, I figured I'd post a new one, which is one of those things that never should have happened. But like that awful car wreck, I cannot look away.

I remember seeing that live when it aired. I thought to myself "am I still high from last night?" and then I remembered I don't do drugs. It was astonishingly bad.

If every someone needed drugs to get through watching a performance, that was it.

Maybe that will help some of the doubters understand just exactly how awful Suno "music" is.

But with Suno, even celebrities like Mr Vivo can be crossover artists!
