Ironically, last year those of us who suggested he might be a great candidate were roundly scolded.

I was one of those receiving the scolding.  Wrong forum, but I was also mocked for saying midseason that Golden would test well and go in the first couple of rounds.

So, not ancient but not young either!

It don't make a shit.

Billy D would be a fucking no brainer hire.

Obviously the titles at Florida but people forget that he coached the 2016 OKC team that beat the 67 win Spurs then should have beat the 73 win Warriors (and probably cost GS the title with how intense that series was).

I haven’t been in the new Moody Arena. Did we actually hang a banner for Shaka’s team winning the NIT? Just asking?

Hook’em!!!

There was a banner in the FEC forever for the 1978 NIT…

I told y'all the other night that Texas is about to go big and we still have people in here suggesting a Rick Barnes rerun or the dude at Vandy.

Y'all need to open your horizons.

Dad Monty Williams got absolutely MoneyWhipped into coaching Detroit, which he had already turned down twice!
He had been telling everyone he wasn't ready to coach again yet.
As expected, someone who takes a job they don't want, doesn't do well.
And he was fired after the first year, with $65M remaining on his contract.  $65M!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Williams

Coached an NBA finals and two Conference Semi Finals for PHX Suns.

Monty is fucking awful. Detroit is going to make the playoffs, potentially as 4th or 5th seed this year. Mind you, one year after Monty coached them to 28 straight fucking losses with a top 10 talent in Cade Cunningham on the team.

Look into Mark Byington.  He is doing magic at Vanderbilt.

As an assistant coach? They are 6-8 in the conference. Sure, it better than last year, but Stackhouse had them at 11-7 just two years ago. That dude has nowhere near the level of success in his coaching career to even show up on CDC's radar. Whoever we hire, I can guarantee his resume will far exceed Byington's.

Goddamn I laugh at the low expectations that some people on this board have.

I would expect nothing less from a Surlian, except... you must also hit on the daughter.
Make them jealous of each other.

And then, you know, take 'em both home, take some pix, share with your brothers... amen.

And post a pic of your dog too because dogs are cool

You have multiple people telling you to chill the fuck out but because I'm drunk - btw I'm drunk a lot - you're suddenly off the hook?

I mean if you want to project upon others and not take accountability or show any humility then whatever but "well ztejas was hammered so it doesn't matter what I posted tonight" is a wild take.

Ole Miss's program looks pretty good right now.  We should throw all the money at their coach and see if he'd bite.

What a refreshing take, and a real treat in what has become a complete beating of a thread.

He’s a drunk and he’s old at 62, but I would take a decade of Mark Few running things. He was impressed with Moody when Texas blew his team out in Beard’s fateful second season. Before Texas was forced to hire Terry, Few had expressed real interest and was going to be a shocking potential hire.

Wonder how Billy Donovan would fare in the NIL age of college basketball. Or if he would even want to.

Expand

I believe he'd fare quite well.  NIL is above-board compensation of players.  He succeeded in an era where paying players was below board, so I think he'd excel in this era.  Texas NIL will be there for the right situation, IMO.

There are likely more, but the top-4 traits of a college HC are:

  • roster construction
  • offense and defense systems
  • in-game coaching
  • attention to detail

Donovan has all of those.  He'd be a fantastic hire.

I think he’s capped out at Gonzaga. He could reach a higher potential level at Texas with our resources and I’m sure he’d love to be able to add a title to his illustrious resume.

I think that's a question you ask if you're middle of the pack. At Texas, as well as a few other places,  your NIL means you don't worry as much.

Obviously he had the DUI in 2021 but when you say he’s a “drunk” is it based on anything else?

From an outsider's perspective, I suspect Few would be a slam dunk hire for just about any school with the resources to get him what he needs. He seems like he's treading water at Gonzaga and that a new program with lots of money and great facilities for him to build a program around might get the juices flowing again. He doesn't have to build a Texas basketball program practically from the ground up like he did at Gonzaga.

If I was a Texas fan, I'd be VERY happy if CDC managed to steal him away. It'd be awesome to have another coach of his caliber here in the state of Texas, as well.

I thought that was a longstanding rumor. Maybe the DUI was isolated though. I’ve never hung out with the guy or anything.
