UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]

Bro they took the test a second time and scored even better.   Racist.

though I’d assume Mr. Escalantes network is centered around the Hispanic community which doesn’t really produce a lot of great players.  So pass

Hispanic community, not great at basketball? Manu, Gasol brothers, Ricky Rubio, Ibaka, the list goes on and on of Hispanic greats.

What about Ben McCollum? His first season coaching D1 led to a 31-4 record, a conference title/conference tourney title and a win over a 6 seed. Drake was giving it to Tech in the 2nd round for a good stretch before Tech pulled away towards the end. He's the most successful D2 coach in recent history with 4 titles and his first season in D1 was a success. Ben is only 43 years old to boot.

One thing I was told last night ... RT would rather be fired and get his buyout money than try and get a job now. We shall see if that remains true. UNLV and USF have/are showing interest in RT. UNLV could be heading another direction

First of all I’m not sure all that you listed are Hispanic.  Second Mr Escalante’s network is strictly centered around south central. Those Hispanics tend to be not so good in basketball

Wouldn’t it be great if RT just quits and we invest that buyout on another coach?

Wow what an original idea. You’re certainly the first person to suggest him in a 136 page thread

Well, yeah.  I'd rather get a lump sum that's probably 3X what I'd get annually somewhere else, and THEN go get another job after some nice R&R.

nope ...

Young is married to Melissa Bailey of Omaha, Nebraska; they have two sons and one daughter. He is the great-great-great-great-grandson of Lorenzo Young, the brother of BYU's founder and namesake, Brigham Young.[15] He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

That's not exactly as unique a claim as one might think.  Lorenzo had 10 children, 7 of whom made it to adulthood.  If each generation between Lorenzo and Kevin Young's father had 5 offspring, there' be approximately 13k people who could make the above claim.

Fwiw, Brigham Young had 56 children.  Football's Steve Young was the g-g-g-grandson of Brigham.  Using that and 5 offspring per generation puts Steve in a class of around 35k who can make the Brigham claim. Fwiw.

I know the LDS folks are really into genealogy, so the exact numbers might be vastly different.  I made some simplifying assumptions.

Miller has coached at legit tournament schools for something like 20 years.  Pearl is at ~16 years, Oats is at ~ 6 years.  I'd say Oats is winning that comparison.

Yeah but no way Oats can be good never coaching in the p4!!!!

Lol how are you getting 13k from 7 kids and 35k from 56 kids? I got like 22k for Lorenzo and 175k for Brigham assuming 5 offspring for everyone.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's more.

Kevin Young: For 13k: 7 (gggg-gf) * 5 (ggg-gf) * 5 (gg-gf) * 5 (g-gf) * 5 (gf) * 3 (f)
Steve Young For 35k: 56 (ggg-gf) * 5  (gg-gf) *  5 (g-gf) * 5 (gf) * 5 (f)

All assumptions except in bold, which are numbers I found on the internets.  I also assumed all of Brigham's kids were able to have kids.

Steve is 1/5 of your number because he's 1 generation older.
Kevin is 3/5 of your number because he has 2 siblings.  The salient word in the previous post was "*between*" regarding Lorenzo and Kevin's father.  I left out the other detail.

Thanks for checking my math.

If no news tomorrow about Terry’s future I think we can assume it isn’t Miller and someone still coaching.

My guess is Tuesday. CDC won’t want to overshadow the women’s second round game. If you believe Bowels (I don’t), CDC and RT aren’t even meeting until tomorrow

I don’t think relieving Terry of his job overshadows a 2nd round game but fair critique. If that’s the case Tuesday we know for sure.

Not so much overshadow as tomorrow is for Vic’s team. Nothing going on Tuesday or Wednesday

Grant McCasland has an $8.4M buyout and makes >$4M/year. Would prob require $40-50M in total and a no go as a result.

Bill Self is on a "lifetime rolling contract" that pays upwards of $10M per annum.

It could be someone who loses today and maybe one extra day to get everything lined up. No firing by Tuesday means either someone still coaching or haven’t got the person locked down.

I still remember when A&M fired Jimbo Fisher midseason and proceeded to get publicly rejected by every major candidate until landing on Mark Stoops and then Elko. No need for any of that. Better to keep it tight.

You don’t even have to use Stoops as an example. We got turned down by everyone, whether we reached out or not, to replace Mack and Augie.

CDC keeps this shit buttoned up.

He did well at San Francisco, was young, up and coming, and they got him on the cheap.

I *thought* Florida had to go cheap on basketball because they were still paying someone from football? Mullin?

Gerry made a comment on a video this morning that he expects John Clark (our lone 2025 signee, top 100 recruit) to stick with Texas no matter what.

Usually signees always bolt during a coaching change so I thought that was interesting.

Man, your constant bitching about that is getting old.

BO&W entertains me with his stupidity and sometimes he’ll link to, or C&P, something worthwhile, so I don’t have him on ignore.

That said, he’s a title-ist imbecile and a general know-nothing, so when he’s vomiting on coaching search threads, I just scroll past every one of his posts without reading. It works quite well.
