UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]

Miller should be an improvement over RT but it's not an exciting hire. The guy has been mediocre at best the past 6 years. He was good in his first Xavier stint and at AZ while he was paying players under the table but pretty weak since he got busted.

Sean Miller doesn’t excite me much, but I’ll get on board like I always do.

Feels like this used to be a much more coveted job post Rick Barnes. Shaka turned down the UCLA job, but took ours. I don’t think a similar thing would happen today, we’ve got some image rehabilitation to do  imo. Terry/Beard/Shaka all catastrophes for different reasons.

This might have been who they wanted all along.

I think it was Sean’s freshman or sophomore year at Pitt and we were all up at the Big East Tournament. Team hotel was the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. My idiot former brother-in-law and I were riding down on the elevator with Sean and Darren Morningstar. They were going to MSG but, neither had any idea of how to get there. So I remember saying that they could just follow us and we would show them the way to MSG.

Another time, in a game, Sean was taking the ball out of bounds after a basket and instead of passing it in he just dribbled it in, turnover.

However, if all this is true, you now have the assist man for “Send It In Jerome!”. Assuming he has GPS in his University of Texas courtesy car he should find his way to campus.

Is this really the hire that excites our money to get on board? He better win big quick.

Hey ketch, I’m pretty sure CDC sold this to the money guys first

Paying players before it was legal is pretty different from DV...

And telling your boss to shove the suspension up his own ass via your lawyer

Would rather McCollum, but if this is CDC’s guy I’ll defer.

I'll take Miller over McCollum. Arizona is a big job and you want that type of experience for someone taking the Texas job.

So long as football wins CDC is safe. How long are they going to throw money at a guy who can't beat Shaka Smart? Doesn't seem like a hire that warrants a grace period.

When you’ve nailed your ten other hires you get to make the 11th.  Maybe Sean was the best we can get or the best fit

Miller is a massive, massive coaching upgrade from Terry. He’s going to be given the resources in NIL to succeed and we have the Moody Center already. Some of y’all are being way too pessimistic.

Where are we with NIL in relation to other SEC teams?

This.

And Texas is not a job that will attract a  Self of Pitino or the like.

Miller may not be the hot hire, but he a solid coach and he's never had this much NIL and strong AD backing, and that's a winning combination.

He had a pretty nice NIL advantage at Arizona back before it was cool.  He was beating Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky for guys.  I think he's a pretty good coach but falls a little short of slam dunk-y.

It still is.

People just refuse to accept that timing of everything and that a lot of coaches that were wanted on this board and within this fanbase are already at programs they’ve built so there’s no reason to leave -or- the buyout was too big, which goes back to timing.

So I was looking at McCollum’s story deeper, and he has literally based his entire life within a 5.5 hour radius of Storm Lake, Iowa.  He’s been biding his time for one of about 5 or 6 jobs in the western Midwest.  Kind of a momma’s boy in the most admirable sense.

i hate that he’s going to Iowa, but I respect the hell out of him

No shit. The amount of morons on here is mind bottling. And it shouldn’t be a surprise. If there was an attainable better coach I haven’t seen it. Lloyd vs miller is splitting hairs. I mean I guess I get it if you have morons that really thought we were getting Jay wright or Billy Donovan.

McCollum was never happening. He was always going to go to Iowa/stayin that area of the country.

lol Self has a lifetime contract that pays him $10M/year

yeah apparently this factor and lloyd’s buyout are why it’s miller and not one of them. i understand not being able to justify having self earning more than sark, but the idea that we “couldn’t afford” lloyd’s buyout bother’s me. “Texas” and “can’t afford” are two phrases which do not go together.

It’s either “is Lloyd’s buyout worth it” or it goes back to my conspiracy theory when it comes to Texas basketball compared to other men’s sports

I don't love the idea of paying Self $10M/season at 62.

Kentucky and IU are blue bloods and even they didn’t get first choice.

someone up top mentioned Pitino.  He’s 72 and home.   Why would he come here?

Yup this is who I wanted too after Oats.

He’s home now though.

shit, i was asking for musselman to replace shaka in like 2017. if we’d have just done that we’d have avoided a lot of bullshit and heartache over these last several years, and we’d have scored 80 ppg in the process.

You were calling for that after the loss to Nevada in the tournament. I remember
