Mack Brown's ceiling was 11 wins for 21 seasons.  Do you know how stupid you sound?

Wise words sound like foolishness to the ignorant.

What did he get at Texas that he never had before? An elite brand that had won 3 NCs before and had gone all in with him to win. 100 percent.

Most of those years he was coaching at schools that don't win titles in football and don't go all in on it. He doesn't win in 2005 without the backing of an all in AD, alumni/donor base, and the brand/recruiting territory that comes with the University of Texas football.

That's why I said the AD has to go all in with top 5 NIL, maybe even top 3, to give Miller a chance. Mack was never the best college football coach in the country in any year he coached. But with the right situation and the right backing he got a title.

Texas wanted to hire Miller last time but circumstances and the fact he lost to Texas and Terry it didn't happen.

This time Miller beat Texas and Terry, and he got the job.

So, if Texas and Terry had beaten Miller and Xavier, which they should have.

Then Texas loses to Illinois in the first round, which most likely would have happened.

Does Texas still name Miller as head coach, if Terry was fired.

Would seem a little awkward.

I will say it is almost like CDC predicted this.  he probably wanted Miller last time, Terry beat him(oops).  He was going to have a problem so he bowed to media, major alum players and Terry's money buddies.  Gave RT the bare minimum contract knowing the buyout was baked in.

Then Terry gets matched with Miller again but fortunately Miller beats him.  CDC had to be like "WTF, somebody give me a break here."

Neither result of the Xavier games had Jack shit to do with Terry getting the job last time and Miller getting the job this time. I mean this thread is full of some really uninformed and stupid takes so sorry to single y’all out.

Oh c'mon. The 2023 Xavier game absolutely had a lot to do with RT getting the job.

You've seen the endless back and forth about who Texas should hire.  No reasonable person would think a coach like Miller was anywhere below the top few on that list.  All of the dreams of Donovan, Wright, Self, etc. were just dreams, for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that Texas has yet to step to the front of the "dream program" list.  I don't find Sean Miller particularly captivating, just as I didn't find Rick Barnes, Shaka Smart, or Chris Beard particularly captivating.  You don't know how a guy will do until you hand him the reins and the money and the facilities and the recruiting base and say "all right, let's see what you can do".  I don't think Sean Miller is any worse a choice than any of the other realistic candidates.  We're Texas.  We ain't Duke.

It's 100 percent pertinent and relevant at the moment. The AD just hired a disgraced former cheater who was fired from Arizona and had to go back to a lower level program to rehab himself. 2 years after firing a much better coach who then went down to a lower program to rehab himself. It's like divorcing your wife for cheating once, then 2 years later marrying a much uglier and nastier woman who got divorced because she cheated. It's stupidity, have some consistency. If they wanted the basketball program to stand on ethical principle then hire a squeaky clean coach with no cheating scandals in the past. If they don't care about reputation, then why did they fire the better coach?

Also, Beard is now up 11 as a 6 seed coaching a program that has never been to the elite 8, and hasn't been to a sweet 16 in 24 years. I hope he wins the national title there just to piss in all of you moron's Cheerios.

No kidding.  He made Omaha 3 years out of 6.  That's like Elite 8 half the time or something similar.

yeah, but that kind of moves the goal posts, or strays away from the point of the analogy. david pierce’s results for UT baseball are, on paper, similar to rick barnes’ results for UT men’s hoops. but pierce’s results in context within the standard of Texas Baseball are more akin to tom penders results with Texas Basketball. penders made the tourney every year and was a threat for the S16 most of the time, which is great- but that’s no longer what we aspire to.

to be clear i’m in no way saying saying that sean miller is a tom penders level hire, just giving my interpretation of the analogy. pierce’s results were not good enough for Texas, even though most teams would kill to have them. i think that’s what people mean when they say that miller is a david pierce level hire- that he’s going to objectively be pretty damn good, but that he probably won’t break any new ground for Texas Hoops.

Former players are allegedly lauding the hire. I assume that will make the press in the next few days.

Cool so next year when everyone else has revenue sharing and added NIL and we’re not top 15 as predicted report back

It's an impossible thing to judge because we don't know who the realistic candidates were. It's possible Sean Miller as a reclamation project coming off scandal is the best option we had given whatever the self imposed budget restrictions on the search happened to be.

My point is we already had a PR reclamation project coming off an arrest under contract 2 years ago, so the AD going that route is an admission they fucked up by not keeping Beard. It's incongruent to hire a guy fired in scandal 2 years after you fired a guy in a minor scandal.

I think if you got CDC liquored up a bit and alone in conversation he'd admit the truth of either 1) he wanted to do a suspension then retain Beard but was forced to fire him from above, or 2) he fucked up and made a bad decision at the time.

That's a terrible mindset. The University of Florida has multiple NCs in football, basketball, and baseball since 2000. There's absolutely no reason we shouldn't be up there in that stratosphere as a men's athletics powerhouse in the 2 big money sports and baseball. The reason we aren't is because for much of the time the basketball program has been mismanaged and treated as an afterthought. There's no excuse for it if Florida can make it happen.

I'm saying we don't know what the future holds, because Texas basketball has only recently existed in a world where NIL is an input greater than or at the very least equal to coaching.  "Recruiting" used to be the deal, and for sure there was a lot of money under the table, but now things are different, and they're about to get different AGAIN.  I don't have the hours in the day to suss out all the inputs to the equation, but I assume CDC does, and it's pretty damn clear he had his sights on Miller from the jump.  I'll happily sit back and watch.  I'm extremely doubtful that the future isn't bright.

Then how many games did he decide to hire RT based on? You think Terry gets hired in 2023 if Texas loses in the first round of the tourney?

Making the EE and nearly the FF was absolutely material when it came to rolling the dice on Terry.

I don't think you understand judging based on adequate sample size and not a single data point.

Every program is going to be up and down at times. But this century, the last 25 years, the University of Florida has owned us in men's money sports. If they can achieve that level of success in all 3 there's no excuse for a brand just as big, if not bigger, with more money to do it. Other than incompetence.

It's a dumb analogy, but if we are going to use it, it's more like divorcing your wife for assaulting you and being arrested for it and then two years later marrying someone that used creative accounting to cheat on their taxes by violating a tax rule that has since been repealed.

Let’s place a bet.

You bet on your stupid fucking position that Texas won’t be top 15 in basketball NIL and that I don’t know anything about what is happening for NIL.

I will bet that you are a shitposting clown with no connections to the process. Accordingly, Texas will level up as needed to be a top program on NIL for basketball, along with every other sport.

Which ever one of us is wrong will agree to a permaban from immamac and the other will continue as normal.

My bet is Texas continues to be disappointing in basketball because they make shit hires but hey at least he’s better than RT! You get so worked up over shit it’s hilarious. If 5 mill is the total including revenue sharing that is fucking laughable for a budget. UCONN is doing 5 mill in just revenue sharing. Tech is 3.5-3.8 I just revenue sharing. So yeah it is dog shit if you want to compete for national titles. Unless you think making a s16 and occasional E8 is the Mecca of Texas basketball

Eh, I think it was a combination of Shaka fatigue and fear of the unknown.  Yeah, Tech's run was amazing, but we've seen plenty of one-hit wonders.  You just don't know.  I've admitted, I don't study teams and coaches the way a good AD has to, I don't have the info at hand to make an educated call.  In my ignorant world, if you're not hiring Tom Izzo in 2002 then my crystal ball is really foggy.

I can tell you guys I don't want.  Pearl, Snyder, etc.  Beyond that, I just have to wait and see.

he’s a safe hire who should placate the fans, and frankly, i’m not even mad at it. i simply have to accept that i’ve been fooled. i really really thought that with the foundation that Beard had laid, and with how evident it is that the right coach is worth more than 12 top flight recruits (barnes, beard, pitino, hurley, golden, oats, pearl, sampson, just some of the recent examples of this), that we were going to go all out to make the home run hire, and if we couldn’t hit a guaranteed homer that we’d at least swing for the fences. instead, we took a six pitch walk. not bad, but not great either. not what we wanted. not what we were hoping for. not when the program is down 3 in the ninth.

Kind of depends, doesn't it?  Is this a leadoff walk?  Because as we all know, leadoff walks always score.  😉

Since tons is plural, that’s at least two tons. At 200 pounds per player on average, that would be 4000 pounds/200 pounds per player = 20 5 stars.  In 12 years at Arizona. That’s 1.67 5 stars per year.

And people say I'm pedantic...

What type of defense does Miller run? I am so damn tired of the physical defense we always seem to run and then splatter when we reach the tournament, we need smarter defense with the ability to switch and deal with screens. At the end of the day it is the variability on 3pt shots, and well free throws, that can turn a cupcake into a cinderella.

I am definitely eating some choice words about comparing Sean Miller's Arizona teams to the choking team up north.

Posted

I don't LOVE the hire, but if you look at Sean Miller's current resume, it is pretty comparable to Rick Barnes and Kelvin Sampson at the same age.  Miller doesn't have a Final Four but he has a ton of Elite 8 and Sweet 16 finishes and quite a few conference titles.

Sean Miller

  • 0 Final Four + 4 Elite 8s + 4 Sweet 16s

Kelvin Sampson at 56

  • 1 Final Four + 1 Elite 8 + 1 Sweet 16

Rick Barnes at 56

  • 1 Final Four + 2 Elite 8s + 3 Sweet 16

Mark Few at 56

  • 1 Runner Up + 2 Elite 8s + 6 Sweet 16s

Bruce Pearl at 56

  • 0 Final Four + 1 Elite 8 + 3 Sweet 16

No, they don't, the football team turned it around and if Lagway hadn't got injured they would have been much better, they were beating Gorgia till his injury and then an injury to their starting running back. When he got back, they beat Ole Miss and kept them out of the playoffs, then won a bowl game. Going to Gainesville and facing them next season will be no picnic.

As far as their baseball team that was ranked #11 and will still be ranked top top twenty or better. They opened up their SEC season against #1 Tennessee and then #4 Georgia, they will be just fine. Every team has to face this SEC conference guantlet.

Shaka got 5 stars at Texas. It isn't about stars, it's about getting the right mix and building the right team.

In all those years at Arizona and Xavier, Miller got to 3 elite 8s and 7 sweet 16s. That's his ceiling, like I said in a post a few days ago in the Fire Rodney thread. He's going to need maximum all in financial push from the University and it's people to break that ceiling. If they don't go all in Miller is good enough to have us in a lot of 2nd round/Sweet 16s as a ceiling.

Also, he cheated. Doesn't matter if paying players is legal now, it absolutely was not legal then. He compromised his ethics and was a black stain on the reputation of the University. That's why he was back at Xavier and not another top program after Arizona fired him. He's a redemption project. I just wish we had kept our own redemption project who had us on the rise and built an elite 8 team. Who, while living in Mississippi, has not had another incident in over 2 years.

If you dumb monkeys who are celebrating this would realize the hypocrisy and stupidity of your stance on Beard, and the huge mistake it was to fire him, then we could all get along.
