Not me.  Think he was best basketball coach Texas ever had.

Well part of being the best coach is not being a fuckstain human to the point of being fired, so disagree

Sean Miller's success at Texas will be judged by whether he can put a stop to a handful of posters' incessant pining for Rick Barnes and Chris Beard.

This is Surly Horns, not Bitter Horns, and brother, you sound really bitter.  There were several coaches that I preferred over Miller, but let it go.  You're being a sourpuss.  But, I have a remedy, something to turn that fussy frown of yours upside down.

This is what sold CDC on the hire.

Let's take a look at where most of the contenders this year got their coaches from

Maryland - Seton Hall

Florida - San Francisco

Alabama - Buffalo

BYU - NBA assistant

Texas Tech - North Texas

Arizona - Gonzaga assistant

Duke - Duke assistant

Michigan - Florida Atlantic

Kentucky - BYU

A lot of moneywhipping the top coaches from top schools as you can see. Even when we go down the list there's a definite theme

Auburn - Pearl had a show-cause after being fired from Tennessee

Houston - Ditto for Sampson

Ole Miss - Disgraced loser

Arkansas - Coach pushed out by Kentucky

So as we can see, a lot of great programs here, and the one thing they have in common is they all took coaches from contending P4 programs to help push them to the next level. Oh wait, that doesn't actually happen in any of these cases, even the ones I omitted.

im not going to be over losing beard until someone better comes along. his current ole miss team has way less talent than we did this year and yet they were a way better team and are now in the S16. what he’s done at UALR, TTU, UT, and now ole miss is straight up remarkable. we lost decades of what was going to be unparalleled success at Texas when we lost beard. you don’t just go “ho hum, oh well, time to move on” from that.

I used to love oj Simpson

And it's all his fault.

I don't completely understand the poo pooing of this hire. Maybe expectations were too high regarding who Texas was going to be able to bring in? Sometimes there's a candidate that's such a perfect fit that there's no question they're the one. Chris Beard was that kind of hire. Folks like Roy Williams at North Carolina, Bill Self at Kansas, Calipari at Kentucky, Pitino at Louisville.

But usually there are flaws with hires. How many people considered great basketball coaches were can't misses when they were hired? Hurley certainly wasn't. Oates wasn't (is he considered a "great" coach at this point without a ring? Dunno). Scheyer at Duke was a big risk. Indiana can't get their coaching hire right since Knight left decades ago.

Look at UT's history. Abe Lemons wasn't a can't miss. Bob Wetlich was an assistant under Knight. Tom Penders was hired for a fun style coming from Rhode Island. Rick Barnes had some minor success at Providence and Clemson, but had already earned a reputation as not being able to win in the tournament - a rep he still enjoys today. Smart had a spectacular single season at VCU. Beard was as close to a sure thing as we've ever hired, but he's a UT grad in special circumstances. That's akin to UNC being able to hire Roy Williams from Kansas. Rodney Terry became the head coach because of circumstances more than career metrics.

I'd argue Sean Miller has a better coaching resume than any head coach ever hired at Texas other than maybe Chris Beard, due to Beard having the national championship appearance. But in terms of numbers of Sweet 16s before coming to Texas, we've never had anyone of this caliber.

I'm genuinely excited about this hire. I already know I'm going to be frustrated by his defense, because defense is more important to me than it is Miller, but oh well. He's going to run an explosive and exciting offense. He knows how to get people open for their shots. He has a vision for what he wants his basketball team to look like and he'll recruit to that vision. I've seen too many coaches get enamored with the talent they can bring to Austin rather than recruiting the talent that fits the scheme they're going to employ. That won't be Miller's issue.

Miller has shown he's a very good coach. We'll see what he can do at 56. But I feel like he's hungry and wants a chance to compete at the highest level, and he didn't feel like he was going to get that chance at Xavier. And if he doesn't work out we'll move on and go get someone else. By then I imagine the college athletics landscape will have made some seismic shifts, so who knows what college basketball looks like at that point.

But in the meantime I feel like it's an outstanding hire. It's not perfect, but very few hires are.  If he has some early success with the exciting style of offense he runs and the level of financial support Texas basketball receives, I don't see any reason we can't return to the Texas basketball heydays of TJ Ford/Durant/Augustin/et al..

BTW, saying Texas basketball is a top 15 NIL school is hilarious to me. We have some very deep pockets who are emotionally connected to the success of the basketball program. It's not Phil Knight level of support for Oregon football, but it's very deep. And it's basketball specific.

All of this. I checked out on basketball after RT was hired bc I figured it was going to be a fiasco, but this is a good hire. He could win a national title here, just like Barnes. He probably won’t, but he’s a good enough coach that such a thing isn’t inconceivable or anything. I think he will consistently have us in the top 25 and there will be years we will be top 10. Any top 10 team can win it all in the tournament if they catch the right breaks.

6 years/30 mill total

Yeah, generally speaking that's not bad at all.
Unless he's got a huge buyout and we need to get rid of him after three years.

Getting stuck with three years @ $5M or a large buyout will suck, especially if we're wanting to take a chance on an up and comer like Royal Ivey.

Can you imagine spending $10-15M to fire Miller just to then turn around and hire Royal? :)

Everyone who is negging me for pointing out his record against Smart seems to be fluffing Miller. We had 6 years of Smart's incompetence and we have almost 40 pages documenting his continued incompetence in Milwaukee. Why is the fact about Miller's poor record against Smart such a sore spot?

As for options other than Miller, I would have been happy with any of the younger Big 12 guys. If we are taking a chance on guys with sketchy pasts I would have preferred Wade and his more recent, more consistent success. Royal Ivey would have been more exciting.

I'm not so sure you're getting negged because of anything you've posted. I think people are skeptical of your identity, especially given you're a new poster and considering we've had to fatwa socks of a shitty human/obese 9.95er multiple times.

Nah, Chris Beard will be the greatest ‘What could’ve been?’ story in the history of Longhorn basketball

How many women could he have choked out in a long career at Texas. The world will never know.

The agonizing is pretty funny given most of my cbb fan friends here in NC are been saying "hey that's a strong hire, nice work" and the national media seems really upbeat about it. Not sure why Texas fans/media have such a stark divide - just unrealistic expectations I suppose.

I don't see a stark divide at all nor do I see "agonizing" over the hire. I see most of the leading hoops posters on this board in agreement that it isn't a major splash but probably a decent - if not better - hire and I see some fringe dipshits complaining about it and attempting to make their voices heard.

I thought CDC could have and was going to do better but I'll ride with Sean Miller and I think that he has the tools to do some really good stuff at Texas.

Part of the issue is that Texas has absolute killers in the other two rev sports plus baseball and that Beard showed us how high the ceiling can be. Miller has some heavy expectations but fuck it let's see what this guy can do.
