The agonizing is pretty funny given most of my cbb fan friends here in NC are been saying "hey that's a strong hire, nice work" and the national media seems really upbeat about it. Not sure why Texas fans/media have such a stark divide - just unrealistic expectations I suppose.

I honestly can't think of any Texas BB hire that the media has not slobbered, and they have been 100% wrong (character is still relevant). At the end of the day a good AD is the #1 determinant of success and CDC is that, but I would never trust the media who sees Texas as a Tier III basketball school

i think that it’s a combination of: the wild success of essentially every other sports program at UT; CDC’s “top 10 in every sport” proclamation; CDC’s track record of elite hires, leading to an expectation of an obviously elite hire; and the building of the moody center.

we’ve been spoiled. we pulled beard from an in-state rival after they gave him a 6 year extension and made him a top five paid HC. then we turned around and took A&M’s HC coach after he’d had them at no.1 nationally and in the title series. did it like it was nothing, both times. and even though sark wasn’t an obvious home run when he was hired, his program churning out nfl talent and going to the playoffs every year only reinforces the idea that that’s the level that we’re aspiring to.

with that said, it’s understandable why people are divided, because sean miller’s career has been divided.

which one are we getting? we don’t know. beyond that, his period of success coincides with him being able to buy elite players before everyone else in the sport was allowed to do the same. his drop off in results coincides with the leveling of the paying-for-players playing field.

finally, and i cannot emphasize this enough: you have got to remember that literally less than a week ago the national perception of shaka smart was, “great coach, culture builder, UVA or IU should be all over hiring this guy.” national fans and media don’t know shit.

Great take - as per usual when it comes to cbb.

I think the hope with Miller is that we just lit a fire under his ass and that Texas has been waiting for someone to come prove that it's an elite destination and that it's easy as fuck to win here. Beard was on his way to proving that and honestly kind of did in just a year and a half.

Miller isn't Beard but I trust him to replicate it.

Hit the portal and NIL aggressively and lean on the advantages that Texas provides and I think he can kill it here.

I also think there's a chance that this is a miss but we'll see what happens.

i know that we have one poster here with ties to U of A who hates sean miller, but other than that i don’t think there’s any real contingency of hate for miller. “mild disappointment” is more like it. almost nobody is mad about this hire, and essentially everyone is ready to support our new coach and is excited for the future. fun offense, international recruiting, scumbag head coach- it’s every program’s dream hire.

It's top 5 in every sport as of his town hall a few weeks ago. That's why this RT fire was even more inevitable.

Besides the RT hire, I trust CDC with any move he makes. He has been spot-on with every move. Beard would have gone down as the greatest basketball coach in our program's history. But shit happens, unfortunately.

Nobody in their right mind would consider rt a top five guy.  We were forced into that move.

Beard and Schloss were special cases -- one is a UT grad and the other is close friends with CDC.  There is no analog in the current basketball coaching world, with the possible exception of Royal Ivey.

I’m hopeful Miller is like Sark, in that he had some positive past performances, but with some significant questions about his ability to win at the level Texas requires. Sark so far has worked out really well, although he hasn’t yet shown he’s good enough to get over the hump of winning it all. Maybe CDC and the decision makers know what they are doing.

I don't see a stark divide at all nor do I see "agonizing" over the hire. I see most of the leading hoops posters on this board in agreement that it isn't a major splash but probably a decent - if not better - hire and I see some fringe dipshits complaining about it and attempting to make their voices heard.

I thought CDC could have and was going to do better but I'll ride with Sean Miller and I think that he has the tools to do some really good stuff at Texas.

Part of the issue is that Texas has absolute killers in the other two rev sports plus baseball and that Beard showed us how high the ceiling can be. Miller has some heavy expectations but fuck it let's see what this guy can do.

Expand

Apparently,Beard was more of a choker than a killer... But his upside may have been killer.

I'm not so sure you're getting negged because of anything you've posted. I think people are skeptical of your identity, especially given you're a new poster and considering we've had to fatwa socks of a shitty human/obese 9.95er multiple times.

I realized that quickly when the same idiots kept negging only me. Funny they thought they were arguing with Ketchum when there was never any self-aggrandizing push to his X posts or podcasts. Even better, he chose Catch-22 for his username, the epitome of institutional bullshit that he engenders.

I kept pushing Miller's record vs Smart to see if someone would stan for Shaka. I crossed that off my bingo card, with a bonus chorus of 'We don't talk about Shaka'.

Then I got tired of the moving goal posts between 'well who would you pick' and 'why do you keep picking Donovan and Hurley'. Most people shared additional names, which were all quickly dispatched as impossible, to the point of 'well he lied worse than Miller!' At the same time people are spinning that Miller is the best choice for us. Miller basically became a catch-22...he is the only coach we could attract, but he's the best coach there is!

He has been hired. I'll hit the hopium that has been pushed so hard on this thread and go back to lurking.

So, when watching Texas lose to Xavier, I said I wanted someone who coaches an offense that moves like that. I got exactly what I wanted, so I'm happy.

Coach will have to sell AAU guys on a slower pace passing game. Those that get it will want to play for Texas. Hopefully Miller can find athletic shooters and a couple of athletic bigs.

Holy shit Shaka did well against a comparably talented team in the regular season before shitting himself in March? That's nuts. Cross that other team off, then.

And here we see one of the most common mistakes made by message board simpletons. You're not arguing with one person here, there are multiple people with different opinions. There's no hypocrisy (or the extremely misapplied catch-22 you tried to make happen in that post) when you get hit from both sides by different people in a group argument.

But at least you figured out that lurking is probably best for you.

Gerry mentioned this morning he’s heard rumblings that Archie Miller may resign from his head coaching position at Rhode Island to join the Texas staff.

im not going to be over losing beard until someone better comes along. his current ole miss team has way less talent than we did this year and yet they were a way better team and are now in the S16. what he’s done at UALR, TTU, UT, and now ole miss is straight up remarkable. we lost decades of what was going to be unparalleled success at Texas when we lost beard. you don’t just go “ho hum, oh well, time to move on” from that.

All that is true.  100 percent.  But nothing we can do about it but move on.  Ruminating on it does no one any good.  He ain't coming back.

Some folks spend their entire lives in yesterday, never thinking about tomorrow, and never noticing today. It is easier to worship the past than confront the future.

Chris Beard might have been, but he wasn't, and never will be.

One of the major causes, or maybe it is a symptom, of depression is ruminating on the past or on problems/negative things.

I might be getting out over my skis here a bit, but something to keep in mind is that now with everyone able to buy players this favors Texas. He'll have more resources here than anywhere else he's been (including Arizona, who are broke).

Probably explains why he wanted the job so badly.

This could bode well for recruiting a deeper roster of players likely to stay 3-4 years.

Add the occasional rock star recruit, and we have a recipe for success

One of the worst attributes of our coaches the last 5 years was taking non-5* top 100-150 ranked recruits who couldn't get off the bench their freshman year and immediately transferred. Have felt like there's been clear communication and expectation issues that have been desperately needed to be addressed.

I am really interested to see if Miller and Bevo have a natural bond and if Miller reaches out.  Bevo is a huge part of our University and basketball program so if he has an instant affinity for Coach Miller that will speak volumes to our recruits.  If you could, please take and post video of their initial encounter.  Any still shots of Coach Miller petting Bevo would also be appreciated -- would prefer taken from side so I can see as much as possible of both their faces.
