I am really interested to see if Miller and Bevo have a natural bond and if Miller reaches out.  Bevo is a huge part of our University and basketball program so if he has an instant affinity for Coach Miller that will speak volumes to our recruits.  If you could, please take and post video of their initial encounter.  Any still shots of Coach Miller petting Bevo would also be appreciated -- would prefer taken from side so I can see as much as possible of both their faces.

Maybe BEVO will even let him comb him and eat out of his hand? Too early to say.

Beard and Schloss were special cases -- one is a UT grad and the other is close friends with CDC.  There is no analog in the current basketball coaching world, with the possible exception of Royal Ivey.

Would people really have been more excited about Ivey? Any logical reason for that other than he’s a Longhorn?

Very few of us were doing backflips over Sark when he was hired. And he was clearly the right guy. CDC must like what he sees in Miller

He might see the writing on the wall. 18-36 in conference play in his 3 years there. Probably another bad year away from being fired.

Plus coaching at a mid major is about the hardest coaching job in the NIL era

Any good guy you find and develop portals out after one good season

No Ivey would have been a stupid fucking hire.

Maybe in 10 years we give him a ring.

Who exactly is a "Miller pumper"?

Did you think we had a realistic shot to hire Dan Hurley, Jay Wright, Billy Donovan?  No?  Then who?  Oats?  Self?  Really?

Miller isn't particularly exciting, but he knows what he's doing in terms of basketball Xs and Os, and with UT's NIL support I think he stands a real good chance of doing damage.

You have to make Steve Kerr tell you no imo

I sure hope you don't think I was advocating for Ivey over Miller.  I was trying to point out the differentiators between Beard, Schloss and the rest of the coaching world when they were hired.  I swear, people just want to bitch about nothing.

Right. I think Miller will have us competitive in the SEC. He made a fascinating stat in his presser earlier, he never had any McDonald's All-Americans on any of his teams at Xavier. Let's see what he can do with the resources we have. Since Texas is a globally respected academic university, we could have a stronger aura to pull international players to come here.

Yeah I wasn’t talking about you in particular. Just in general pining for Ivey doesn’t make sense to me

Let’s hope Miller works out. I’m ready for more focus on the team and less focus on the coach

I think the press conference was mostly good but bringing up Beard and talking about how they're friends was probably not the smartest idea given how it ended. Nobody seems to have picked it up though.

I am cautiously optimistic with Coach Miller. His teams were lot more exciting to watch than any RT coached teams, so that's a plus for me. I also think he will do better than .500 in the league and get us single digit seeds on a consistent basis. Then we will see if we can make a few deep runs from time to time.

Perhaps he learns from what kept him of deeper runs in the tourney. I think you have to have an experienced team to do some damage in March. Freshman phenoms are fun to watch but they don't help you in March. I think his floor is what Barnes did here (no offense Derka).

If he’s ten years I think he gets us to 2 final fours maybe 3?

that’s a wildly optimistic projection for any coach, particularly one who hasn’t been to the elite 8 in a decade and who has never been to the final four.

Miller's going to double our historical Final Four appearance number in 10 years? Shit, sign me the fuck up.

I'm also optimistic about this hire. However, if Miller even makes one Final Four at Texas, his tenure is likely a huge win.

The agonizing is pretty funny given most of my cbb fan friends here in NC are been saying "hey that's a strong hire, nice work" and the national media seems really upbeat about it. Not sure why Texas fans/media have such a stark divide - just unrealistic expectations I suppose.

Expand

Our fans want us to hire Pitino or Self circa 1995. For every one of those there are 20 flameouts that schools reached for. Texas will do enough in NIL to put a Sweet Sixteen caliber team on floor most years. Personally I’m looking forward to some semblance of a clue on offense. Should at least expect that. I’m pretty gruntled honestly.

He didn't talk about Arizona much besides his son being in the same year as Bijan. As far as comparing us to them, I don't think there are any comparisons. He had a few solid teams at Arizona that underperformed in the tournament.

I said it earlier... He's going to have to sell his style to guys who don't play like that.

I like his motion oriented game, but McDonald's AAs typically don't play that way.  Most are going to want to play AAU style and think they're going to get theirs and leave.

Its ok to have really good players who understand team ball, know how to execute,  can shoot, and will defend.

JFC.  Just stop it with the Beard shit.  Nobody else cares except Surly virtue signalers.  Nobody knows exactly what happened that night.  Let him fade into the twilight of Longhorn lore.  He's gone, so is Barnes.  Move on.   Hop on the team Miller Express.

You don't know what transpired that night.  He wasn't charged or tried.  The  cartoon black and white outfit he was photographed in was absurd.   I doubt you have much knowledge of Randi Truw nor care.  She was banned from every bar, club, restaurant and watering hole in West Austin because of her alcohol-fueled violent outbursts.  If Beard hadn't been UT basketball coach she would have faced a great amount of legal trouble.
I realize that for many Surlies a man cannot defend himself if he is attacked by a woman, his only defense is to flee.  I am sick that I replied to your dumbass twat fallacy, and I want this whole chapter to go away.

we’ve hired sean miller within days of:

•Rodney Terry losing in a play-in game

•Shaka losing as a favored seed *again* in the first round

•Rick Barnes going to his third consecutive S16

•Chris Beard taking Ole Miss waaaaaayyyyy beyond where they should ever be at this point in time (currently up on 3 seed isu 63-43 with 11:27 left, with a roster of guys who will never play a minute in the g league)

within that context, the sean miller hire- unfortunately- feels like a letdown. is he going to be RT or shaka? nope. 0.0% chance of that. he is easily in a different class from them. but- is he going to be a better coach and program builder than beard or barnes? if you’re being honest with yourself, you know that the answer is probably a resounding “nope”.

he’s a safe hire who should placate the fans, and frankly, i’m not even mad at it. i simply have to accept that i’ve been fooled. i really really thought that with the foundation that Beard had laid, and with how evident it is that the right coach is worth more than 12 top flight recruits (barnes, beard, pitino, hurley, golden, oats, pearl, sampson, just some of the recent examples of this), that we were going to go all out to make the home run hire, and if we couldn’t hit a guaranteed homer that we’d at least swing for the fences. instead, we took a six pitch walk. not bad, but not great either. not what we wanted. not what we were hoping for. not when the program is down 3 in the ninth.

there’s reason to believe that things will be better, but miller has a lot to prove before there’s reason to believe that he can take us to the final four like barnes, or have us at no.1 in kenpom like beard. it’s the safest hire possible. don’t love it, but i don’t hate it either. i just have to support it and hope that miller is reborn.

He had some really good teams at AZ. Texas will spend money. He’s a good coach. Anything can happen in the tournament. It’s a B+ hire with the ability to get better. We probably won’t win a national title with him. I would say the same about almost any coach we hire. But we might win one. He’s certainly not incapable of it.

In todays game, recruits will go where they get paid, can build a brand, and jump to the league. At Texas, in Austin, playing in the SEC.....I hope that sells, lulz. Here's the 247 recruiting rankings for Zona for the years he was there (no data for the first couple of years)

Yr Rank 5* 4*
9
10
11 4 2 2
12 3 3 1
13 11 2 1
14 3 1 3
15 3 2 2
16 9 2 1
17 3 2 3
18 23 0 3
19 6 2 1
20 7 0 5
21 NR - -

Thats more than enough talent to make deep runs. Now obviously he never got past the Elite 8, but it wasnt because he couldnt get any talent.
